Ultra-fast wave-optical computing

Tobias J. Haist

I present a method for optical computing based on white-light interferometry. The problem to be solved is coded by optical path lengths and the superposition of all possible paths that a photon can travel is used for computing the solution. The solution itself is chosen by interference with the reference light. Several gedankenexperiments demonstrate how this method can be used for solving computational hard problems. Especially, I will introduce the basic principle with two maze-type puzzles and then concentrate on how the method can be employed for performing ultra-fast (sub-ps) digital-optical arithmetic with arbitrary precision.

Arithmetic logic unit based on the metastructure with coherent absorption

Jiahao Zou, Jun-Yang Sui, Qi Chen +1 more

An arithmetic logic unit (ALU) based on the metastructure (MS) with coherent absorption (CA) is proposed in this Letter. The ALU can perform AND and exclusive OR logical operations at the same frequency point. So it can be regarded as an optical half-adder. By controlling the chemical potential of graphene and the phase difference of coherent electromagnetic waves (EWs), two different binary numbers are input into the ALU. The dynamic absorption peaks, which are generated based on the CA, output the outcomes of the carry-digit bit and non-carry sum bit. This ALU can be used in the field of optical processing and encryption, such as processing hamming code. This given ALU based on the MS with CA has major implications for advancing the study and investigation into the application of CA. Furthermore, it also provides a new, to the best of our knowledge, idea for the study of MS with logical operation.

Ultrafast optoelectronic interface for digital superconducting electronics

Roman Sobolewski

The basic concepts of the ultrafast optoelectronic interface for superconducting digital electronics are presented. Several implementations of both the input optical-to-electrical and the output electrical-to-optical transducers are discussed. As an example, an optoelectronic telecommunication router is used that is capable of switching signals at a >100 Gbit s −1 rate on a single wavelength. We demonstrate that superconducting optoelectronics emerges as the ultimate solution to the ultrafast input/output (I/O) interface of single-flux-quantum (SFQ)-based, superconducting digital electronics.
