Abstract

We have studied the entanglement for continuous variables of the electromagnetic field, focusing on the quadratures of given modes of the field. We demonstrate the direct production of intense (mW range), entangled fields of different colors (covering more than one octave) using an Optical Parametric Oscillator in above threshold operation. We demonstrate bipartite entanglement between signal and idler modes, and tripartite entanglement of these with the pump field for a triply resonant OPO cavity. We have also shown that the detrimental interaction with the environment can lead an initially entangled system into a separable state for finite interaction times, even for continuous variables. This effect is reminiscent of the sudden death of entanglement observed for discrete variables. Finally, we present the possible uses of this entanglement in quantum information processing, with the immediate application of the multicolor entanglement in teleportation over the electromagnetic spectra.vi

The possibility to generate multipartite entanglement in the laboratory allows further investigations of the structure of quantum correlations among many parties. We employ the optical parametric oscillator to directly produce three entangled bright beams of light and study their properties. In this tripartite continuous system, we observe a mixture of behaviours common to discrete systems pertaining to both the GHZ and the W classes of tripartite entangled states.

Generation of Bright Two-Color Continuous Variable Entanglement

Alessandro S. Villar, Luciano Soares da Cruz, K. N. Cassemiro +2 more

We present the first measurement of squeezed-state entanglement between the twin beams produced in an optical parametric oscillator operating above threshold. In addition to the usual squeezing in the intensity difference between the twin beams, we have measured squeezing in the sum of phase quadratures. Our scheme enables us to measure such phase anticorrelations between fields of different frequencies. In the present measurements, wavelengths differ by approximately 1 nm. Entanglement is demonstrated according to the Duan et al. criterion [Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 2722 (2000)] Delta2p- + Delta2q+ = 1.41(2) < 2. This experiment opens the way for new potential applications such as the transfer of quantum information between different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum.

The quest for three-color entanglement: experimental investigation of new multipartite quantum correlations

K. N. Cassemiro, A. S. Villar, M. Martinelli +1 more

We experimentally investigate quadrature correlations between pump, signal, and idler fields in an above-threshold optical parametric oscillator. We observe new quantum correlations among the pump and signal or idler beams, as well as among the pump and a combined quadrature of signal and idler beams. A further investigation of unforeseen classical noise observed in this system is presented, which hinders the observation of the recently predicted tripartite entanglement. In spite of this noise, current results approach the limit required to demonstrate three-color entanglement.

Quantum information with continuous variables

Timothy C. Ralph

Summary form only given. Traditionally quantum information research has centred on discrete quantum variables, particularly binary variables (qubits). However, recently much attention has focused on quantum information manipulations with continuous variables such as the amplitude and phase of the electromagnetic field. As well as offering the possibility of high data rates, continuous variables also exhibit greater versatility in realizing certain operations. For example teleportation, in which quantum information is passed intact through a classical channel with the assistance of shared entanglement, can be achieved more efficiently using continuous variable techniques. I review recent work on the characterization of teleportation and entanglement swapping and present new work on interferometric tests of teleportation. These interferometric tests are important because they allow the efficacy of teleportation to be checked without knowledge of the input quantum state. They can be applied equally to the cases of discrete and continuous variable inputs and in so doing highlight unexpected similarities. I contrast the various classical limits which emerge from the different ways of assessing teleportation. An obvious omission from the list of continuous variable quantum information manipulations is any proposal for direct analogues of 2 photon interference effects, especially those that lead to Bell inequality type tests of local realism. Bell-type correlations are the defining feature of discrete variable entanglement experimentally. I discuss new work that shows how entanglement of the Bell-type can be observed in continuous variable, homodyne measurement schemes.
