Abstract

We investigate the transport dynamics of an interacting binary Bose–Einstein condensate in an incommensurate optical lattice and predict a novel splitting of a matter wavepacket induced by disorder potential and inter-species interaction. The effect of atomic interaction on the dynamics of the mobile and localized atoms are also studied in detail. We also discuss the behavior of the balanced and inbalanced mixtures in the incommensurate optical lattice.

Superfluid Bloch dynamics in an incommensurate optical lattice

We investigate the interplay of disorder and interactions in the accelerated transport of a Bose–Einstein condensate through an incommensurate optical lattice. We show that interactions can effectively cancel the damping of Bloch oscillations (BOs) due to the disordered potential and we provide a simple model to qualitatively capture this screening effect. We find that the characteristic interaction energy, above which interactions and disorder cooperate to enhance, rather than reduce, the damping of BOs, coincides with the average disorder depth. This is consistent with results of a mean-field simulation.

Interaction of matter-wave gap solitons in optical lattices

Beata J. Dąbrowska-Wüster, Elena A. Ostrovskaya, Yuri S. Kivshar

We study the mobility and interaction of gap solitons in a Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) confined by an optical lattice potential. Such localized wavepackets can exist only in the gaps of the matter-wave band-gap spectrum and their interaction properties are shown to serve as a measure of the discreteness imposed on a BEC by the lattice potential. We show that inelastic collisions of two weakly localized near-band-edge gap solitons provide a simple and effective means for generating strongly localized in-gap solitons through soliton fusion.

Abstract. We study mobility and interaction of gap solitons in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) confined by an optical lattice potential. Such localized wavepackets can exist only in the gaps of the matter-wave band-gap spectrum and their interaction properties are shown to serve as a measure of discreteness imposed onto a BEC by the lattice potential. We show that inelastic collisions of two weakly localized nearthe-band-edge gap solitons provide simple and effective means for generating strongly localized in-gap solitons through soliton fusion.

Effect of interactions on the localization of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a quasiperiodic lattice

Jessica Lye, L. Fallani, C. Fort +4 more

The transport properties of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a 1D incommensurate bichromatic lattice are investigated both theoretically and experimentally. We observe a blockage of the center of mass motion with low atom number, and a return of motion when the atom number is increased. Solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation show how the localization due to the quasidisorder introduced by the incommensurate bichromatic lattice is affected by the interactions.

Dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices

O. Morsch, Markus K. Oberthaler

Matter waves inside periodic potentials are well known from solid-state physics, where electrons interacting with a crystal lattice are considered. Atomic Bose-Einstein condensates inside light-induced periodic potentials (optical lattices) share many features with electrons in solids, but also with light waves in nonlinear materials and other nonlinear systems. Generally, atom-atom interactions in Bose-Einstein condensates lead to rich and interesting nonlinear effects. Furthermore, the experimental control over the parameters of the periodic potential and the condensate make it possible to enter regimes inaccessible in other systems. In this review, an introduction to the physics of ultracold bosonic atoms in optical lattices is given and an overview of the theoretical and experimental advances to date.
