Light-matter interaction : atoms and molecules in external fields and nonlinear optics

W. T. Hill, Chi H. Lee

Published Jan 1, 2007• 13 citations
OpenAlex

Abstract

This book draws together the principal ideas that form the basis of atomic, molecular, and optical science and engineering. It covers the basics of atoms, diatomic molecules, atoms and molecules in static and electromagnetic fields and nonlinear optics. Exercises and bibliographies supplement each chapter, while several appendices present such important background information as physics and math definitions, atomic and molecular data, and tensor algebra. Accessible to advanced undergraduates, graduate students, or researchers who have been trained in one of the conventional curricula of physic

Atoms and Molecules

Olivier Pujol, Robert Carles

An impressively comprehensive textbook adopting a phenomenological approach to quantum physics. The chapters cover everything from basic definitions of key concepts to detailed discussions of the underlying theoretical framework, walking students step-by-step through the necessary mathematics and drawing clear connections between the theory and the most important modern research applications including quantum optics, fluids, nanophysics, entanglement, information, and relativity. With this book, students and researchers will have access to hundreds of real-world examples, exercises, and illustrations to support and expand their understanding. Instructors can tailor the content to suit the length and level of their course and will have access to an online solutions manual with fully worked solutions to all 300+ exercises in the book. Other online resources include Python simulations, additional exercises, and detailed appendices.

Atoms and Molecules Interacting with Light

P. van der Straten, Harold J. Metcalf

This in-depth textbook with a focus on atom-light interactions prepares students for research in a fast-growing and dynamic field. Intended to accompany the laser-induced revolution in atomic physics, it is a comprehensive text for the emerging era in atomic, molecular and optical science. Utilising an intuitive and physical approach, the text describes two-level atom transitions, including appendices on Ramsey spectroscopy, adiabatic rapid passage and entanglement. With a unique focus on optical interactions, the authors present multi-level atomic transitions with dipole selection rules, and M1/E2 and multiphoton transitions. Conventional structure topics are discussed in some detail, beginning with the hydrogen atom and these are interspersed with material rarely found in textbooks such as intuitive descriptions of quantum defects. The final chapters examine modern applications and include many references to current research literature. The numerous exercises and multiple appendices throughout enable advanced undergraduate and graduate students to balance theory with experiment.

Photonics : an introductory course

J. Trull

Photonics deals with the applications of light in science and technology including a vast number of different topics from engineering to telecommunications, to medicine, computing, metrology, and on and on. The book covers different topics related to the properties of the coherent interaction of light with matter in the frame of classical electrodynamics introducing the basic concepts in this field to undergraduate students and young researchers approaching this field. The contents include a revision of the fundamental properties of light and of the classical theory of light emission and intro-duces the basic equations describing the propagation of light beams and light pulses, including light propagation in uniaxial crystals and diffraction. A list of solved problems is included at the end of each chapter and the bibliography at the end covers both a basic and a more specialized literature for those students likely to go more deeply into the fascinating ideas of this field.
