Quantum interferences in resonant multiphoton-ionization processes for a strongly coupled atomic system

R.S.D. Sihombing, M. Katsuragawa, G. Z. Zhang +1 more

The resonant multiphoton-ionization (MPI) processes in a strongly coupled atomic system have been investigated theoretically and experimentally using atomic hydrogen as a test medium. The characteristics are described with a parameter NL: the product of atom density and interaction length. The MPI characteristics exhibit a single-atom behavior revealing an Autler-Townes doublet in the low-NL region. In the high-NL region, the Autler-Townes doublet is suppressed to almost zero. This phenomenon is shown to be due to destructive interference between the excitation channels to the strongly coupled upper states. It is also shown that a narrow Doppler-free MPI peak appears at the split center of the Autler-Townes doublet in the high-NL region as a consequence of the strong coupling and the propagation effect. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Multiphoton ionization of atoms

Nikolai B. Delone

The most important results of study of multiphoton ionization of atoms are reviewed. Discussions are presented of specific features of the process, theoretical methods of description of ionization of atoms in a strong light field, the basic principles of design of experiments in which intense laser radiation is used, results of investigation of direct and resonance processes of multiphoton ionization, and the mutual relation between multiphoton processes (multiphoton excitation and ionization) and various phenomena leading to perturbation of the spectrum of bound states of an electron in an atom under the influence of a strong light field.

Theoretical Investigation on the REMPI Processes of Two-Level System

Zhifeng Cui

Based on the time-dependent density-matrix equations of two-level system, the analytical formule of the resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization(REMPI) probabilities of atom were obtained under the resonant and near-resonant condition.Furthermore, for the(2+1) REMPI of oxygen atom with the 2p~34p as resonant state, the dependence of the ionization probability on laser intensity, pulse width and resonance detuning was discussed. At the same time, the relation of the saturation condition of REMPI to the laser intensity and the pulse width was derived.Under the near-resonant condition, the analytical results showed that the ionization probability decreased with the increase of resonance detuning with the fixed laser intensity and pulse width, and the ionization probability increased with the increase of laser intensity at the fixed resonance detuning and tended to become saturation when laser intensity was high enough.Under the resonant condition, the amplitude of the ionization probability increased rapidly with the pulse width when laser intensity increased.
