Ionization of fast Rydberg atoms in longitudinal and transverse electric fields

Abstract

The properties of longitudinal and transverse ionizers for fast Rydberg atoms have been studied experimentally and theoretically. Satisfactory agreements between calculated results and experimental data has been obtained for such properties as dispersion and behavior of the background caused by collisional processes between fast atoms and residual gas molecules.

The study of collisional ionization properties of Rydberg Cs atoms with CCl 4 molecules

Chun Li

In order to explain some characteristics discovered in the experimental study of the collisional ionization of Rydberg Cs atoms with CCl 4 molecules, two corrections were made to the quasi free electron mode, commonly used to describe the collsional ionization of Rydberg atoms with molecules:(1)the influence of the core and the quantum defect of Rydberg atom were taken into account;(2)the separation probability of the product ion pair was calculated. With this corrected model, a theoretical result in good agreement with our experiment measurements was obtained. A comparison with another reported experimental result was also made.

New field ionizer for fast Rydberg atoms

Sergei A. Aseyev, Yu. A. Kudryavtsev, D. V. Laryushin +2 more

New type of field ionizer for fast Rydberg atoms based on permanent magnetic field is developed. As distinct from electric field ionization, the ions and electrons resulting from ionization in magnetic field conserve their kinetic energies. This property can be very useful for RIS applications.

Detailed study of collisional background in collinear laser photoionization of fast atoms

Sergei A. Aseyev, Yu. A. Kudryavtsev, Vladilen S Letokhov +1 more

We showed that there are two main processes that produce the collisional background in the method of the collinear laser photoionization of fast atoms. The first process is the ionization of fast atoms and the second one is the collisional excitation of fast atoms into Rydberg states. The first experimental results on Rydberg states formation cross sections in atomic collisions were obtained. For the first time it has been experimentally obtained such cross sections scaled as n−3.To reduce the collisional noise the use of fast Rydberg atoms ionization in permanent magnetic field is proposed.

Theoretical studies of Rydberg atom collisions

R.E. Olson

During the last two years, theoretical studies were performed on a variety of topics related to collisions involving Rydberg atoms. Progress was made towards the understanding of ion-Rydberg atom, Rydberg atom-Rydberg atom, and ground state atom-Rydberg atom collisions. Cross sections were calculated for electron capture, ionization, and excitation processes and parametrized in terms of atomic parameters. A strong dc electric field was also incoporated in calculations of electron capture and ionization cross sections for ion-Rydberg atom collisions. The results of this latter investigation indicate the design of a far ir photon detector which is based on the field ionization of Rydberg atoms may be limited by the collision processes. (Author)

Influence of electric fields on background photo- and collisional ionization processes in Rydberg-atom collision studies

S. B. Hill, R. Parthasarathy, L. Suess +1 more

Studies of Rydberg atom collision processes, especially those with small reaction rate constants, are frequently complicated by spurious background signals associated with photoionization by thermal blackbody radiation and with ionization resulting from collisions with background gas. Here we demonstrate that the magnitude and relative importance of the signals that result from these processes are strongly influenced by the presence of an applied electric field. Possible causes of this dependence are discussed.
