Double-resonance Stark spectroscopy as a probe of hydrogen substate production in fast atomic collisions

Patrick M. Koch, David R. Mariani

With a new laser method the authors have directly observed highly excited hydrogen atoms with large values of the magnetic quantum number mod m mod . They emphasise the importance of studying substate production in atomic collision processes and outline a procedure for measuring ratios of substate production cross sections with their method.

Linear Stark Effect Due to Resonant Interactions of Static and Dynamic Fields

Arthur Cohn, Pradip M. Bakshi, Gabor J. Kalman

We investigated the line shape of the Lyman-$\ensuremath{\alpha}$ transition of a hydrogen atom simultaneously subjected to a static and a perpendicular high-frequency electric field. It was found that resonance effects occur, producing a profile substantially different from the Stark spectrum of the fields acting independently. This result shows that the interpretation of turbulent hydrogen plasma spectra by the Blokhintsev (dynamic field only) theory is not generally valid.

Rydberg sodium atoms in a strong microwave field

Igor M. Beterov, I. I. Ryabtsev

Review of experiments on microwave spectroscopy of sodium Rydberg atoms carried out during last several years by our group, is presented. Most of the experiments have been done for the first time with Rydberg atoms. These are: static and dynamics Stark spectroscopy, two-photon dynamic Stark effect, double Stark resonance, scattering of Rydberg atomic beam by strong resonant microwave radiation. Also an experiment on pure amplification without the inversion in two-level Rydberg micromaser is discussed.
