Abstract

Atomic coherence in a Λ system may be created by spontaneous emission. In this paper it is shown that the coherence may lead to lasing without inversion and the features of the effect of the coherence on the laser gain is analyzed.

LASING WITHOUT INVERSION: GAIN AND SATURATION

Zhenfei Luo, Zhizhan Xu, LIN FU-CHENG +1 more

The solution for the equations of atomic density matrix is obtained, without resorting to any approximation, in the Ξ-type of three-level system with lower-level coherence. The conditions on pumping are analyzed in the strong-coherence case for lasing without inversion and the saturation term is derived.

Effect of spontaneously generated coherence on inversionless lasing gain in an atomic system with Doppler broadening

Hui Ma, Xia Tan, Shufen Tian +2 more

We have studied the effect of the spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) on gain of lasing without inversion (LWI) in a closed three-level Λ-type atomic system with Doppler broadening. It is shown that, regardless of the driving and probe fields being co- or counter-propagating, at a suitable value of the Doppler width, we can obtain a much larger LWI gain with SGC than that without SGC; and the region of the LWI gain spectrum with SGC is obviously larger than that without SGC. When the Doppler width takes a constant value, the gain does not monotonically decrease or increase with increasing strength of SGC, the largest LWI gain can be obtained by adjusting strength of SGC. Generally speaking, the co-propagating probe and driving fields is favourable to obtain a larger LWI gain.

DEGENERATE QUANTUM-BEAT LASER

Xiangming Hu, 华中师范大学应用物理研究所,武汉430070

Both Λ-type system and V-type one can show lasing without inyersion and inversion without lasing due to atomic coherence. Spontaneous emission noise of Λ-type laser is reduced due to coherent substraction but that of V-type laser is reduced due to coherent addition

ATOMIC COHERENCE INDUCED BY TWO-PHOTON PROCESS——TRANSITION FROM LASING WITH INVERSION TO LASING WITHOUT INVERSION

Xiangming Hu, Wang Dexin, (1)华中师范大学物理系; (2)华中师范大学应用物理研究所

In this paper, the pumping mechanism in the closed Ξ-type three-level system can be simplified using the coherence induced by the two-photon process. The system exhibits either lasing with inversion or lasing without inversion so long as there exists the pumping field. The system exhibits the transition from lasing with inverson to lasing without inversion under certain conditions. Near the transition lasing without inversion may be as efficient as lasing with inversion.

A three-level Λ-type atomic system is pumped by an incoherent radiation field. The system lases without population inversion in the steady state. We analyze the inversionless gain and origin of the gain.

EXTERNAL-FIELD-INDUCED COHERENCE AND LASING WITHOUT INVERSION: THE V-TYPE SYSTEM

Zhenfei Luo, Zhizhan Xu, 中国科学院上海光学精密机械研究所,上海201800

The conditions for realizing lasing without inversion are investigated via density matrix method in bare and dressed states in the V-type closed lifetime-broadened system where atomic coherence is induced by an external electromagnetic field. It is shown that a proper choice of pumping rate may lead to the realization of lasing without inversion.
