Conditioning on Subalgebras - Entropy Duality and Generalized Quantum Stein's Lemma in von Neumann Algebras

Bjarne Bergh, Li Gao, Mizanur Rahaman

We establish duality relations for conditional entropies relative to subalgebras of arbitrary von Neumann algebras, including the Umegaki relative entropy as well as the sandwiched- and Petz-Rényi divergences. Even in finite dimensions, these results extend the familiar dualities for conditional entropies from tensor-product subsystems to general subalgebras, while also lifting the framework to the fully infinite-dimensional setting. As an application, we establish an infinite-dimensional extension of quantum Stein's lemma when the alternative hypothesis is the state space of a finite-index subalgebra, which gives an operational interpretation of the relative entropy to a subalgebra as the optimal asymptotic error exponent in composite quantum hypothesis testing-the first beyond finite dimensions.

Regularized barycentric Rényi divergences

Milán Mosonyi

Barycentric Rényi divergences were introduced in [Mosonyi, Bunth, Vrana, Linear Algebra and its Applications, 2024] as an alternative to standard Kubo-Ando constructions to define multivariate quantum Rényi divergences. They are defined via a variational expression and depend on a finite collection of quantum relative entropies $D^{q_x}$. When all the relative entropies are monotone under CPTP maps then so are the corresponding barycentric Rényi divergences, and when all the relative entropies are additive then the corresponding barycentric Rényi divergences are subadditive under tensor product. Additivity has only been established before for the case where all $D^{q_x}$ are chosen to be the Umegaki relative entropy, which is also the only case where the barycentric Rényi divergence (called the minimal one) was known to admit an explicit expression. Here we settle the problem of additivity by showing that for any choice of monotone quantum relative entropies, the regularized barycentric Rényi divergence coincides with the minimal barycentric Rényi divergence on invertible inputs. This in turn implies that if at least two of the $D^{q_x}$ are strictly larger than the Umegaki relative entropy (in a precise sense), then the resulting barycentric Rényi divergence is not even weakly additive.

The regularized channel Rényi divergence is continuous

Lukas Schmitt, David Sutter

We show that the regularized channel Rényi divergence is continuous at $α= 1$. As consequences, we establish an exponentially strong converse for channel discrimination, a subchannel-smoothed asymptotic equipartition property, a relative entropy accumulation theorem, and a new proof of the generalized quantum Stein's lemma. Our result further shows that the regularized channel relative entropy is computable. The continuity proof relies on a variational formula that expresses the regularized channel divergence as a single-letter optimization over variables of unrestricted finite dimension. We then establish continuity using a novel spectral confinement technique.

Barycentric Rényi divergences were introduced in [Mosonyi, Bunth, Vrana, Linear Algebra and its Applications, 2024] as an alternative to standard Kubo-Ando constructions to define multivariate quantum Rényi divergences. They are defined via a variational expression and depend on a finite collection of quantum relative entropies DqxD^{q_x}Dqx. When all the relative entropies are monotone under CPTP maps then so are the corresponding barycentric Rényi divergences, and when all the relative entropies are additive then the corresponding barycentric Rényi divergences are subadditive under tensor product. Additivity has only been established before for the case where all DqxD^{q_x}Dqx are chosen to be the Umegaki relative entropy, which is also the only case where the barycentric Rényi divergence (called the minimal one) was known to admit an explicit expression. Here we settle the problem of additivity by showing that for any choice of monotone quantum relative entropies, the regularized barycentric Rényi divergence coincides with the minimal barycentric Rényi divergence on invertible inputs. This in turn implies that if at least two of the DqxD^{q_x}Dqx are strictly larger than the Umegaki relative entropy (in a precise sense), then the resulting barycentric Rényi divergence is not even weakly additive.
We show that the regularized channel Rényi divergence is continuous at α=1α= 1α=1.
