Abstract

Recently, interest in photon echo has been revived because of its potential application in time-domain optical memories1. Several demonstrations have been reported in gases and also bulk organic and inorganic materials at cryogenic temperatures2-4. In this paper, we report the observation of accumulated photon echo in Er doped optical fibers and demonstrate that these fibers can be used to store information on the subpicosecond time scale.

We report the observation of accumulated photon echo in Er-doped fibers. We also demonstrate time reversal and autoconvolution of femtosecond pulses, which suggest that Er-doped fibers are a promising medium for femtosecond time-domain optical signal processing.

Photon-Echoes in a Pumped Er-Doped Fiber

Valéria Loureiro da Silva, Yaron R. Silberberg

Recently we reported the first photon echo experiments in Er-doped fibers, and described their application to ultrafast time domain signal processing [1]. Our previous results were obtained with absorbing Er-doped fibers at 4°K, and our signals at 1.53µm were attenuated by the fiber. In this paper we report photon echo experiments with Er-doped amplifiers. We expect the photon echo process in amplifiers to yield strong echoes, perhaps stronger then the input signal. This could be important for signal processing applications. To our knowledge this is the first demonstration of photon echo in any inverted system.

Coherent Effects in Er-doped Fibers: Photon-Echo with Femtosecond Pulses

Yaron R. Silberberg, Valéria Loureiro da Silva, J.P. Heritage +3 more

Optical fibers have proven to be one of the most important nonlinear media, even though in most cases the nonlinearity exploited is the notoriously weak Kerr effect of the silica-based fiber. By using doped fibers, new, stronger nonlinearities are possible. These stronger effects could allow for new phenomena and applications. Coherent effects, in particular, should be important when pulses shorter or comparable to the dephasing time of the impurity ions propagate in the fiber. Here we report, for the first time, the observation of accumulated photon-echo and free induction decay during the propagation of femtosecond pulses in Er doped fibers at 4.2°K.

Accumulated photon echoes on doped fibers

Yaron R. Silberberg, Valéria Loureiro da Silva, J.P. Heritage +2 more

Accumulated photon echo experiments in erbium-doped optical fibers are reviewed. The experiments demonstrate the advantage of the single-mode optical fibers for investigations of resonant coherent effects. A theoretical analysis of the accumulated echo process which is particularly suitable for the highly saturated, highly absorptive experiments in fibers is presented. The capability of ultrafast time-domain signal processing in the doped fibers is shown. The inhomogeneous width of the 1.53- mu m transition investigated can support pulses at short as 0.5 ps. With an estimated approximately 1-ns homogeneous dephasing time, the fibers can handle (store or process) about 1000 b at rates of 1 Tb/s.>

Picosecond accumulated photon echo in Nd-doped optical fiber

Coherent transient phenomena are attracting much attention because of their potential in time-domain optical memory· and optical signal processing.1 Since rare-earth ions doped in amorphous materials show a broad inhomogeneous linewidth, they should allow ultrafast coherent transient phenomena.
