Abstract

The numerical simulation results of electromagnetically induced transparency phenomenon in the degenerate quantum transitions scheme with Doppler broadening are presented for the case of abrupt leading of a probe pulse edge rising. It is shown, that joint action of electromagnetically induced transparency and self-induced transparency phenomenon’s lead to appearance of adiabatons with complicated many spikes envelope structure.

Numerical simulation of optical nutations and a precursor pulse in electromagnetically induced transparency

Oleg M. Parshkov, А. В. Волков

The results of numerical simulation of the electromagnetically induced transparency phenomenon in the Λ scheme of degenerate quantum transitions J = 0 → J = 1 → J = 2 with Doppler broadening of spectral lines are presented for the cases of continuous and abrupt rises in the leading edge of the input probe radiation pulse. For circularly polarized radiations, it has been shown that the deviation from the condition of adiabatic sequence can lead to a separation of the probe pulse of the adiabaton into a train of subpulses. In the case of linear polarization of the input probe field and the circular polarization of the input control field, the probe radiation pulse is split into two pulses with opposite circular polarizations and a multispike structure of the envelopes. In the case of an abrupt rise in the leading edge of the input probe pulse, regardless of the peak intensity of the latter, the precursor pulse arises at a probe radiation frequency and the velocity of its propagation coincides with the speed of light in vacuum.

Display of nonadiabacity in electromagnetically induced transparency

The numerical simulation results of the nonadiabacity display in electromagnetically induced transparency are presented. The Λ scheme of degenerate and inhomogeneous quantum transitions J = 0 → J = 1 → J = 2 is examined for the cases of slow and abrupt rises in the leading edge of the input probe radiation pulse. If an abrupt rise of the leading edge of the input probe pulse takes place the precursor pulse arises at a probe radiation frequency and the velocity of its propagation coincides with the speed of light in vacuum.

Короткие импульсы нормальных мод электромагнитно индуцированной прозрачности

AbstractThe process of propagation of short probe pulses of electromagnetically induced transparency has been analyzed theoretically in the case of elliptically polarized control radiation. As a model of a resonant medium, a Λ scheme of quantum transitions between the $$^{3}{{P}_{0}}$$ , $$^{3}P_{1}^{0}$$ , and $$^{3}{{P}_{2}}$$ degenerate levels of the ^208Pb isotope has been used. The situation in which the probe radiation is rather weak compared to the control radiation has been examined. In this case, the field of the probe pulse can be represented as a sum of the fields of two elliptically polarized pulses that propagate in the medium independently of one another without changing their polarization state, which makes it possible to interpret them as nonstationary normal modes. Numerical simulation has shown that the structure of normal modes depends on the ratio of the width of the spectrum of the input probe pulse to the Doppler frequency broadening of the quantum transition that is resonant to the probe field. If this ratio is small, each mode in the medium is a single pulse similar to the input probe pulse. Under these conditions, the propagation of each normal mode in the medium can be fairly well characterized by the group velocity depending on the intensity and the state of polarization of the control radiation. As this ratio increases, normal modes in the medium initially acquire the shape of a regular decaying train of pulses, and then their structure becomes chaotic. The described evolution is accompanied by an increase in the energy absorption of the probe radiation by the medium and by a significant deterioration in the applicability of the notion of group velocity for describing the propagation process of normal modes.

Numerical simulation of adiabatons in electromagnetically induced transparency under quasi-resonance conditions

Oleg M. Parshkov, Ekaterina R. Govorenko

The evolution of adiabatons in electromagnetically induced transparency in the scheme of degenerate quantum transitions with Doppler broadening of spectral lines has been numerically simulated taking into account the effect of resonance detunings. It is shown that, in the case of linearly polarised fields, an increase in the probe-field resonance detuning (under exact-resonance conditions for the control radiation) leads to a transformation of electromagnetically induced transparency into electromagnetically induced absorption at certain stages. When the control-field resonance detuning is varied, the transparency of the medium for the probe (exactly resonant) radiation monotonically decreases with increasing detuning because of the rising role of single-photon absorption. In the case of circularly polarised control radiation and linearly polarised input probe field, a probe pulse propagating in the medium splits into two pulses with oppositely directed circular polarisations. An increase in the probe pulse resonance detuning (under exact-resonance conditions for the control radiation) leads primarily to an increase in the absorption by the medium of the probe pulse, the direction of circular polarisation for which coincides with the circular-polarisation direction for the control radiation.

On the basis of the semiclassical theory of the laser light interaction with a cold atomic cloud it is shown that, under conditions of three-fold degeneracy of the Λ-scheme's ground-level, the effects of electromagnetically induced transparency and the significant reduction of group velocities are realized for two light pulses of different polarization and shape in the presence of the controlling light wave. Their effective joint reproduction when switching on the controlling light after a dark pause is demonstrated.

Influence of self-induced transparency on adiabatons in the lambda EIT scheme with degeneracy of levels

Oleg M. Parshkov

We present the results of numerical simulation of the adiabaton emergence process in the lambda scheme of degenerate energy levels with the quantum number of the total angular momentum, J = 0, 2, 1. In the case of linear polarisation of the input highfrequency field and circular polarisation of the input low-frequency field, the energy of the high-frequency component of the adiabaton is shown to focus in two or more pulses: in one of the pulses the field is circularly polarised in a direction opposite to that of the low-frequency input field, whereas in other pulses it is circularly polarised in the same direction as that of the field. This effect is caused by the specific character of electromagnetically induced transparency in the lambda scheme under study and by the trends introduced by self-induced transparency in it.
