ON THE THEORY OF SUPER FLUIDITY OF BOSE AND FERMI SYSTEMS

N. N. Bogolyubov

OpenAlex

Abstract

The low-energy- spectra of Bose-gas excitations were studied by a specially developed method of canonical transformations. The same generalized method was applied for the development of the theory of superconductivity and studies of supenfluidity of the Fermi system. (R.V.J.)

NEW METHOD IN THE THEORY OF SUPERCONDUCTIVITY

N.N. Bogulubov, V. V. Tolmachov, DMITRY V. SHIRKOV

The method of canonical transformations is generalized to Fermi systems and forms the basis of a method for investigating the problem of superconductivity. Starting from Frohlich's Hanmiltonian, the energy of the superconducting ground state and the one-Fermion and collective excitations corresponding to this state are obtained. It turns out that the final formulas for the ground state and one-Fermion excitations recently obtained by Bardeen, Cooper, and Schrieffer are correct in the first approximation. The physical picture appears to be closer to the one proposed by Schafroth, Butler, and Blatt. The effect on superconductivity of the Coulomb interaction between the electrons is analyzed in detail. A criterion for the superfiuidity of a Fermi system with a four-line vertex Hamiltonian is established. (auth)

A New Method in the Theory of Superconductivity

N. N. Bogoljubov, V. V. Tolmachov, D. V. Širkov

Abstract The method of canonical transformations proposed by one of the authors ten years ago in connection with a microscopic theory of superfluidity for Bose systems, is generalized here to Fermi systems, and forms the basis of a method for investigating the problem of superconductivity. Starting from Fröhlich's Hamiltonian, the energy of the superconducting ground state and the one‐Fermion and collective excitations corresponding to this state are obtained. It turns out that the final formulae for the ground state and one‐Fermion excitations recently obtained by Bardeen, Cooper and Schrieffer are correct in the first approximation. The physical picture appears to be closer to the one proposed by Schafroth, Butler and Blatt. The effect on superconductivity of the Coulomb interaction between the electrons is analyzed in detail. A criterion for the superfluidity of a Fermi system with a four‐line vertex Hamiltonian is established.

Spectrum on elementary excitations in superfluid Bose--Fermi systems

Ernst A. Pashitskii

The spectrum of elementary excitations in the system of interacting Bose- and Fermi-particles was obtained at a temperature of absolute zero (Dose- condensation being taken into account by means of the Bogolyabov canonic transformations. In terms of a model of permeable spheres'' with finite repulsion it(is shown that the boson spectrum omega (p) in a definite region of parameter has the minimum at p = 0. By selecting parameters one succeeds in obtaining a quite satisfactory quantitative agreement of the theoretical and experimental spectra for superfluid helium. In the case when the Fermi energy is considerably higher than the bosorins maximum energy, a gap characterizing bond energy of the copper pairs can appear in the fermion speetrum due to exchange of virtual supercondensate'' bosons. If in this case the interaction between fermions at infinity is of attraction character, then under certain conditions sustained longitudinal collective excitations of Pose-type with a finite gap'' in the energy spectrum may exist in the superfluid fermion subsystem. Possibility of appearance of similar excitations in superfluid nuclear matter of neutron stars (pulsars) due to gravitational interaction between nucleons is discussed. (auth)

SPECTRUM OF ELEMENTARY EXCITATIONS OF SUPER-FLUID FERMI SYSTEMS

I.I. Krush, Yu.V. Tsekhmistrenko

A number of problems involving the spectrum of elementary excitations of superfluid Fermi systems were studied by the methods of quantum field theory. A system with direct binary interaction is considered at zero and non-zero temperature, as well as an electron-phonon system at absolute zero. On finding Schwinger's equations for oneparticle Greene functions, use was made of the ground state approximation proposed by N. N. Bogoliubov, i.e., a formalism was applied which does not preserve the full number of particles. (auth)

Theory of exotic states in quantum Fermi and Bose systems

Oleksandr Sergiyovych Peletmynskiy, Yu. V. Slyusarenko, Andrii Sotnikov

The monograph is devoted to the main aspects of theoretical description of quantum many-body systems with Bose-Einstein or Fermi-Dirac statistics. We provide a review of modern methods of theoretical research, both analytical and numerical, as well as experimental realizations of unique effects and phenomena in quantum systems. The main attention is given to the theoretical study of exotic states in degenerate gases of atoms and quasiparticles. We develop a methology to accurately determine chemical potentials and other thermodynamic characteristics of ideal Bose and Fermi gases. These allow us to describe the ultraslow-light phenomenon in ultracold atomic gases in the framework of the microscopic approach that accounts for the internal degrees of freedom of bound states. The formalism relies on the linear response theory applied for the case of weak perturbation by the external elecromagnetic field. We also study Bose-Einstein condensation of photons in ideal atomic gases in different regimes of degeneracy of atomic and photonic components. A special attention is given to the Bogoliubov method of quasiaverages and related theory of a weakly interacting Bose gas with condensate. We extend the Bogoliubov theory to examine the spinor condensate and its magnetic states, as well as the condensate of heteronuclear Fermi-Fermi molecules. We also study a spatially periodic state of Bose-Einstein condensate, which can serve as a model for supersolid state of matter and develop the hydrodynamic theory of the latter. We outline the main statements of the Fermi liquid theory including the Pomeranchuk stability conditions of the normal state. It is shown that the violation of stability conditions results in certain phase transitions associated with the breaking of translational symmetry and rotational symmetry in the momentum space. We review a progress in the theoretical description of ultracold Fermi gases consisting of neutral atoms in the presence of the optical lattice spatial modulation. In case of multicomponent systems, a number of unique magnetically-ordered states are theoretically studied and predicted. We also develop a theory of highly dispersive spinful excitons in cobaltite compounds that explains certain unusual magnetic properties and effects in the resonant inelastic X-ray scattering on these materials.
