Double optical resonance in hydrogenlike atoms

Viktor A Kovarskii, N. F. Perel'Man, S. S. Todirashku

An analysis is made of the scattering and absorption of light by a hydrogenlike atom in the field of an electromagnetic wave which mixes resonantly an excited level (n = 2) with its neighbor (n = 3). The scattering and absorption cross sections are calculated as a function of the frequency of the wave and of the intensity of the electromagnetic field. The influence of low-frequency nonresonance field on the scattering and absorption of light by an atom in the ground state is considered. It is shown that the scattering (absorption and luminescence) spectra of a hydrogenlike atom may be frequency modulated by a low-frequency amplitude modulated field.

Amplitude- versus frequency-modulated pumping light for coherent population trapping resonances at high buffer-gas pressure

Amber Post, Yuan‐Yu Jau, Nicholas N. Kuzma +1 more

Coherent population trapping (CPT) signals can be optimized with amplitude-modulated pumping light. As shown theoretically and experimentally in this paper, the optimum wave forms produce strong CPT signals at both low buffer-gas pressures, where the hyperfine structure (HFS) splitting of the optical absorption lines is well resolved, and also at high buffer-gas pressures, where the HFS is no longer optically resolved due to pressure broadening. On the other hand, CPT resonances from frequency-modulated waves are severely degraded for these high-pressure conditions. High buffer-gas pressures may offer advantages for miniature frequency standards and magnetometers, including suppression of diffusion losses in miniature cells, suppression of light shifts, and less stringent requirements for frequency stability of the pumping light sources.

Magneto-optical resonances in the field of counterpropagating waves

Sergei A. Zibrov, Yaroslav O. Dudin, A. G. Radnaev +5 more

The resonance of the intersection of sublevels in a probe laser field resonant to the cyclic transition corresponding to the D 2 87Rb line has been investigated in a zero magnetic field. The strong effect of an additional laser field acting on the adjacent transition has been revealed. In a cell without the buffer gas and antirelaxation coating, the amplitude of the probe-field absorption resonance can increase by more than an order of magnitude in the presence of a counterpropagating wave. The effect is observed at the laser frequency tuned to the cross resonance, when the counterpropagating waves simultaneously act on moving atoms at the cyclic and open transitions with the common lower level. The theoretical analysis of the effect of the additional field on the electromagnetically induced absorption resonance is in agreement with the experimental data.
