Abstract

We introduce a new class of coherent metamaterials where regular ensembles of meta-molecules show collective, coherent narrow-band response leading to unusual electromagnetic properties that invites drawing the parallels with some well-know physical phenomena.

Mimicking quantum phenomena with classical meta-materials

Nikolay I. Zheludev

In this talk we aim to explore some parallels between the well established quantum effects and electromagnetic response of meta-materials. Keystone quantum phenomena like Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT), Stimulated Emission, the Mossbauer Effect, the Meissner Effect and beta-decay are among those that have intriguingly close counterparts in electromagnetic meta-materials.

Slow Light in “Zero Thickness” Metamaterials

Nikitas Papasimakis, V.A. Fedotov, S. L. Prosvirnin +1 more

We show for the first time that a classical analogue of EIT can be realized in “zero thickness” planar metamaterials (meta-surfaces) resulting in substantial delay of propagating electromagnetic pulses.

Mimicking and modelling physics phenomena using photonic metamaterials

Nikolay I. Zheludev

We aim to explore electromagnetic metamaterials as a platform for mimicking and modelling a broader physical realm. Keystone physics ideas and phenomena of quantum physics such as Electromagnetically Induced Transparency, Bose-Einstein Condensation, lasing, the Mossbauer Effect, the Meissner Effect, parity violation in atoms and the concept of anion are among those that could be intriguingly close mimicked in classical electromagnetic meta-materials.
