An Introduction to Quantum Theory

Keith Hannabuss

Abstract This book provides an introduction to quantum theory, primarily for mathematics students. It assumes a knowledge of basic algebra and elementary group theory, with little or no familiarity with more advanced topics. Although it takes a traditional approach, the book exploits ideas of linear algebra and points out some of the mathematical subtleties of the theory. It also covers such topics as Bell's inequalities and coherent and squeezed states, and introduces group representation theory, algebraic quantum theory, and quantum statistical mechanics. Later chapters discuss relativistic wave equations and elementary particle symmetries from a group-theoretical standpoint.

Algebraic and Diagrammatic Methods in Many-Fermion Theory

Frank E. Harris, Hendrik J. Monkhorst, David L. Freeman

This book contains the proceedings of Algebraic and Diagrommatic Methods in Mang-Fermion Theory. Topics covered include: Operator Algebra; The Independent-Particle Model; Occupation-Number Formalism; Diagrams; The Configuration-Interaction Method; Many-Body Perturbation Theory; and The Coupled-Cluster Method.

A Group-Theoretical Approach to Quantum Optics: Models of Atom-Field Interactions

A. B. Klimov, Sergei Chumakov

Written by major contributors to the field who are well known within the community, this is the first comprehensive summary of the many results generated by this approach to quantum optics to date. As such, the book analyses selected topics of quantum optics, focusing on atom-field interactions from a group-theoretical perspective, while discussing the principal quantum optics models using algebraic language. The overall result is a clear demonstration of the advantages of applying algebraic methods to quantum optics problems, illustrated by a number of end-of-chapter problems. An invaluable s

Introductory Quantum Optics

Christopher C. Gerry, P. L. Knight

This book provides an elementary introduction to the subject of quantum optics, the study of the quantum mechanical nature of light and its interaction with matter. The presentation is almost entirely concerned with the quantized electromagnetic field. Topics covered include single-mode field quantization in a cavity, quantization of multimode fields, quantum phase, coherent states, quasi-probability distribution in phase space, atom-field interactions, the Jaynes-Cummings model, quantum coherence theory, beam splitters and interferometers, dissipative interactions, nonclassical field states with squeezing etc., 'Schrödinger cat' states, tests of local realism with entangled photons from down-conversion, experimental realizations of cavity quantum electrodynamics, trapped ions, decoherence, and some applications to quantum information processing, particularly quantum cryptography. The book contains many homework problems and an extensive bibliography. This text is designed for upper-level undergraduates taking courses in quantum optics who have already taken a course in quantum mechanics, and for first and second year graduate students.

Field theory and many-body theory

Joel Feldman, Richard Froese, Lon Rosen

This book is the first volume of the proceedings of the Canadian Mathematical Society Annual Seminar on Mathematical Quantum Theory, held in Vancouver in August 1993. The seminar was run as a research-level summer school concentrating on two related areas of contemporary mathematical physics. The subject of the first session, quantum field theory and many-body theory, is covered in the present volume; papers from the second session, on Schr odinger operators, are in Volume 2. Each session featured a series of minicourses, consisting of approximately four one-hour lectures, designed to introduce students to current research in a particular area. In addition, about thirty speakers gave one-hour expository lectures. With contributions by some of the top experts in the field, this book provides an overview of the state of the art in mathematical quantum field and many-body theory.
