Interference visibility and wave-particle duality in multipath interference

Tabish Qureshi

Wave-particle duality in multipath interference is fraught with issues despite substantial progress in recent years. It was experimentally shown that in certain specific conditions, getting path information in a multipath experiment can actually increase the visibility of interference. As a result, it was argued that in multipath interference experiments, visibility of interference and which-path information are not always complementary observables. In the present paper, an alternative wave-particle duality relation is presented, based on a sum of visibilities of interference from individual pairs of paths. This relation is always respected, even in the kinds of specific situations mentioned above. This sum of visibilities turns out to be related to a recently introduced measure of coherence. As one of the consequences, it provides an alternative way of experimentally measuring coherence in a multipath interference experiment. As another consequence, this relation suggests a simple way of measuring path-distinguishability in multipath interference. In addition, it resolves several outstanding issues concerning wave-particle duality in multipath interference.

Theoretical photon origin, a didactic introduction to the wave particle duality

Paco H. Talero L., William J. Robayo

In modern physics courses the idea of photon has been teaching through from the einsteinian formulation based on the photoelectric effect. Einstein's photon concept allow the quantization of the electromagnetic field, but does not dwell on the idea of photon as particle. The objective of this paper was to demonstrate that the photon has its origin essentially in the special relativity, the electromagnetic theory and in the symmetry between the Lorentz's transformations associated flat monochromatic electromagnetic waves and particles with zero rest mass. This approach allows to understand the wave-particle duality of photon and allows to propose an alternative teaching focused on this duality to develop the course of modern physics.

Wave particle duality, the observer and retrocausality

Ashok Narasimhan, Menas C. Kafatos

We approach wave particle duality, the role of the observer and implications on Retrocausality, by starting with the results of a well verified quantum experiment. We analyze how some current theoretical approaches interpret these results. We then provide an alternative theoretical framework that is consistent with the observations and in many ways simpler than usual attempts to account for retrocausality, involving a non-local conscious Observer.
