Finite-Dimensional and Infinite-Dimensional Quantum State Spaces: Two Fundamentally Different Forms of Continuity

ming Cheng

This work analyzes the fundamental distinction between finite-dimensional quantum systems and infinite-dimensional wavefunction systems. It introduces three mathematically independent notions of dimension—linear dimension, parameter dimension, and degree-of-freedom dimension—and shows that finite-dimensional systems are “triple-finite,” while wavefunction systems such as L^2(R) are “triple-infinite.” The paper distinguishes geometric continuity on finite-dimensional projective manifolds (e.g., the Bloch sphere) from structural continuity arising from the uncountable degrees of freedom of continuous configuration spaces. It further explains why infinite-dimensional systems cannot be reduced to finite-dimensional ones, drawing on functional analysis, spectral theory, and the properties of unbounded operators. Intermediate systems such as L^2([0,L]) and the extension to quantum field theory are also discussed, illustrating how spatial topology shapes spectral and dynamical behavior. The framework clarifies the categorical difference between finite- and infinite-dimensional quantum state spaces and highlights their complementary roles in quantum theory.

Renormalized Von Neumann entropy with application to entanglement in genuine infinite dimensional systems

Roman Gielerak

Abstract A renormalized version of the von Neumann quantum entropy (which is finite and continuous in general, infinite dimensional case) which obeys several of the natural physical demands (as expected for a “good” measure of entanglement in the case of general quantum states describing bipartite and infinite-dimensional systems) is proposed. The renormalized quantum entropy is defined by the explicit use of the Fredholm determinants theory. To prove the main results on continuity and finiteness of the introduced renormalization, the fundamental Grothendick approach, which is based on the infinite dimensional Grassmann algebra theory, is applied. Several features of majorization theory are preserved under the introduced renormalization as it is proved in this paper. This fact allows to extend most of the known (mainly, in the context of two-partite, finite-dimensional quantum systems) results of the LOCC comparison theory to the case of genuine infinite-dimensional, two-partite quantum systems.

Quantifying continuity of characteristics of composite quantum systems

Максим Евгеньевич Широков

Abstract We describe the most general form of the Alicki–Fannes–Winter method for obtaining uniform continuity bounds for characteristics of composite quantum systems and consider several modifications of this method, which make it applicable to a wide class of characteristics in both finite-dimensional and infinite-dimensional cases. We present uniform continuity bounds for the most important characteristics of composite quantum systems. Along with the results obtained earlier by various authors, we describe a number of new results proved by the proposed methods. In particular, we obtain new continuity bounds for the quantum discord, one-way classical correlation and its regularization in finite-dimensional and infinite-dimensional bipartite quantum systems.
