Abstract

The lifetime r and the cross section a for depopulation induced by collisions with ground-state Rb atoms were measured for the 14 2D3 / 2 state of Rb.The experiment was performed in the gas-cell conditions in a range of Rb vapour temperatures in the vicinity of 340 K.The lifetime value r = 1970(130) ns, agrees with the theoretical prediction with allowance for the influence of blackbody radiation as well as of the effects due to core polarizability and spin-orbit interaction. The measured cross section Q = 6.5(3.1)x 10 -12 cm2 is close to the geometrical cross section. This agrees with similar observations made by other authors for the case of the lower n 2D states of Rb.

Collisional depopulation of rubidium Rydberg levels by rare gases

M Hugon, B. Sayer, P. R. Fournier +1 more

The cross sections for the quenching of highly excited Rb(nS) (32<or=n<or=45) and Rb(nD) (30<or=n<or=41) states have been measured for the different rare gases. In most cases studied, the quenching cross sections seem rather constant or slightly decreasing with n for a given series and a given rare gas. The experimental data are compared with the results of calculations using various theoretical approaches. It is shown that in this range of large n values the main process responsible for the quenching is the Rydberg-electron-rare-gas interaction, as previously stated for lower n values (10<or=n<or=20).

Lifetimes, depopulation cross sections and hyperfine structures of some Rydberg S and D states of133Cs

J. S. Deech, Robert Luypaert, Leslie Pendrill +1 more

Measurements have been made of time-resolved fluorescence from n 2 S 1/2 and n 2 D 3/2 states of 133 Cs (n=8 to 14) over a range of vapour densities covering the onset of collisional depopulation. Lifetimes for the free atom and depopulation cross sections are deduced. Lifetimes are proportional to (n*) x with x=2.52+or-0.06 (S states) and 2.62+or-0.06 (D 3/2 states). Cross sections are proportional to (n*) 4 . Hyperfine-structure interaction constants for the 2 D 3/2 states determined by the method of quantum beats agree with the recent results of Belin et al. (1976).

Fine-structure transition cross-sections in 7~2D states of Rb induced in collisions with 5 ~2S_(1/2) state atoms

Xin Sun

In a vapor cell, the relative intensities of a sensitized fluorescence I3/21 and a direct fluorescence I3/22, as a function of T (100 to 200℃), had been measured by the methods of selective stepwise excitations with a Rb lamp and a tunable CW dye laser. From these measurements, the fine-structure transition cross-section in the 7 2D states of Rb induced in collidsion with ground-state Rb atoms were determined to be σfs (7 2D5/2→72D3/2) = 4.7 × 10-13 cm2 and σfs1 (7 2D3/2→7 2D5/2) = 7.0 × 10-13cm2 and the cross-section for transfer of excited Rb 7 2D-state atoms out of the doublet were also determined as σtr(5/2) (7 2D5/2→states other than Rb 7 2D) = 0.62 × 10-13 cm2. The calculcted result for the geometrical cross-section of excited Rb 7 2D state shows that the magnitunes of σfs and σfs1 can be described relatively well by σgeom.

Collisional Energy Transfer for Rb_2 in Excited State by Rb Atoms

Yifan Shen

At different Rb densities,Rb vapor was irradiated in a glass fluorescence cell with pulses of radiation from a pumped-laser,populating Rb 2 (B 1 Π u)state by single-photon absorption.Energy transfer in Rb 2 (B 1 Π u) + Rb(5S) collision is studied using methods of atomic and molecular fluorescence.The decay signal of time-resolved fluorescence from B 1 Π u → X 1 Σ + g transition was monitored.The effective lifetimes of the B 1 Π u state can be resolved.The plot of reciprocal of effective lifetimes of the B 1 Π u state against Rb densities yielded the slope that indicated the total cross section for deactivation and the intercept that provided the radiative lifetime of the state.The radiative lifetime 23.5ns for the B 1 Π u is obtained.The cross section for deactivation of the Rb 2 (B 1 Π u) molecules by collisions with Rb atoms is σ 3=(4.33 ± 0.14) × 10-15 cm 2.At the different Rb densities,the time-integrated intensities of the resulting Rb emission lines.I(5P 3/2 → 5S 1/2) and I(5P 1/2 → 5S 1/2) were measured.The absolute values for Rb 2 (B 1 Π u)+Rb→ Rb 2 (1 1 Σ + g) + Rb(5P J)collisional transfer cross sections have been obtained.The cross sections are σ 31=(2.86 ± 0.13) × 10-16 cm 2 (for transferring to 5P 1/2) and σ 32=(8.30 ± 0.38) × 10-16 cm 2 (for transferring to 5P 3/2),respectively.

Quasiclassical calculations of blackbody-radiation-induced depopulation rates and effective lifetimes of Rydberg nS , nP , and nD alkali-metal atoms with n≤80

Ilya I. Beterov, I. I. Ryabtsev, Denis B. Tretyakov +1 more

Rates of depopulation by blackbody radiation (BBR) and effective lifetimes of alkali-metal $nS$, $nP$, and $nD$ Rydberg states have been calculated in a wide range of principal quantum numbers $n\ensuremath{\le}80$ at the ambient temperatures of 77, 300, and 600 K. Quasiclassical formulas were used to calculate the radial matrix elements of the dipole transitions from Rydberg states. Good agreement of our numerical results with the available theoretical and experimental data has been found. We have also obtained simple analytical formulas for estimates of effective lifetimes and BBR-induced depopulation rates, which well agree with the numerical data.
