Abstract

A way resulting in lasing without inversion (LWI) in an open resonant A-type system from a nonlinear dynamics viewpoint is investigated. The destabilization of the non-lasing solution can occur not only through pitchfork bifurcation, giving rise to continuous wave LWI, but also through Hopf bifurcation, giving rise to self-pulsing LWI. This is much different from that of the corresponding closed resonant A-type system in which the destabilization of the non-lasing solution can occur only through pitchfork bifurcation. The effects of the unsaturated gain coefficient, cavity loss coefficient, atomic injection and exit rates on the two bifurcations are discussed.

Nonlinear Dynamics Study of Lasing without Inversion for Open Lower-ladder and V Systems

Fan Xi-jun

The study result shows that in open resonant lower-ladder and V systems, the destabilization of the nonlasing solution can occur through a Pitchfork bifurcation giving rise to continuous wave lasing without inversion (LWI), and also through a Hopf bifurcation giving rise to self-pulsing LWI. This paper also analyzes the effect of the unsaturated gain parameter, damping rate of cavity , ratio of the atomic injection rates and atomic exit rate on the two instabilities.

Destabilization of the non-lasing solution in open three-level systems

Xijun Fan, Chengpu Liu, Shufen Tian +3 more

Lasing without inversion is investigated from a nonlinear dynamics viewpoint for the open resonant lower-ladder and V systems. We find that, for the two systems, destabilization of the non-lasing solution can occur through pitchfork bifurcation, giving rise to continuous-wave lasing emission, and also through Hopf bifurcation, giving rise to self-pulsing lasing emission. This conclusion is very different from that obtained from the corresponding closed systems by Mompart in 1998. The effects of the gain parameter, damping rate, ratio of the atomic injection rates and atomic exit rate on the two types of destabilization are also analysed.

Lasing without inversion in three-level systems : self-pulsing in the cascade schemes

J. Mompart, C. Peters, R. Corbalán +1 more

Lasing without inversion (LWI) in specific models of closed three-level systems is analyzed in terms of nonlinear dynamics. From a linear stability analysis of the trivial nonlasing solution of the homogeneously broadened systems with on-resonance driving and laser fields, we find that, near lasing threshold, resonant closed Λ and V schemes yield continuous-wave LWI while resonant cascade schemes can give rise to self-pulsing LWI. The origin of this different behavior is discussed. For parameters of a real cascade system in atomic 138Ba we check numerically that the self-pulsing solution is stable in a broad range of nonzero detunings. It is shown that the self-pulsing emission can still be observed when the typical residual Doppler broadening of an atomic beam is taken into account.

Investigation of transient process and steady output of lasing without inversion

Xuejun Fan, J. J. Li, D. M. Tong +3 more

The transient evolution processes and steady outputs of continuous wave lasing without inversion (LWI) and self-pulsing LWI in a resonant open V type three-level system are studied. It was found that the two kinds of LWI have some obvious differences not only from the steady outputs but also from the transient evolution processes. The effects of the unsaturated gain coefficient, cavity loss coefficient, ratio of the atomic injection rates and atomic exit rate on the transient evolution processes and steady outputs are discussed.
