Abstract

Symmetric informationally complete positive operator-valued measures (SIC-POVMs, or SICs) are optimal minimal measurements for quantum state tomography. Problem~1 of Horodecki, Rudnicki and Życzkowski's open problems in quantum information asks for SICs in infinitely many dimensions. By work of Appleby--Flammia--Kopp and Radchenko--Wheeler, ghost SICs, which satisfy the SIC equations with Hermiticity up to parity, exist unconditionally for $d\ge4$. We study the passage from ghosts to SICs. We compute all isolated points of the complexified SIC variety for $d=4,5,6$; exactly half are SICs. We prove that no symmetry of the SIC equations maps a ghost to a SIC, so the step is purely arithmetic, and that a SIC exists in dimension $d$ whenever the ghost overlap units satisfy a place law: each Galois conjugate is real or unimodular according to the infinite place of the real quadratic field $F$ below it. If the unit field is abelian over $F$, the place law is the Stark relation $c_-=κ$; equivalently, a Galois conjugate of an associated near-group fusion category is unitary exactly when it is pseudo-unitary. For $d$ a power of a prime $p\equiv5\pmod 6$ or of $3$, an infinite family, we prove that under the algebraic part of Stark's conjecture $c_-=κ$ is equivalent to the triviality of $κ$ on the Hilbert-class-field part of the unit field. That condition involves no complex conjugation, and it follows from a sign-free multiplet hypothesis. We state an explicit $GL_2$ reciprocity law for the squared ghost overlaps that implies $c_-=κ$, and we prove it for the computed algebraic overlaps in $d=5,7,11,15$ by Artin reciprocity and a check in every ray class. Zauner's conjecture remains open: the algebraic part of Stark's conjecture and the multiplet hypothesis are not proved here.

AI Summary

The paper studies the remaining step in the Stark-based approach to Zauner’s conjecture: converting algebraic “ghost SICs,” known to exist for every $d\ge4$, into Hermitian Weyl–Heisenberg-covariant SIC projectors. It formulates this step through Galois actions on a complexified SIC variety and on normalized ghost overlaps. A sufficient condition is a place law: overlap units must be real above one infinite place of a real quadratic field $F$ and unimodular above the other. When the unit field $M/F$ is abelian, this is equivalent to $c_-=\kappa$, identifying complex conjugation at the second place with simultaneous inversion of the units. The paper gives finite-field and single-generating-unit criteria, proves that extended Clifford transformations cannot convert ghosts into SICs, and relates the place law to unitarity of pseudo-unitary Galois conjugates of associated near-group fusion categories. For $d=p^k$ with $p\equiv5\pmod6$, or $d=3^k$ with $k\ge2$, additional algebraic hypotheses reduce the identity to triviality of inversion on $M\cap H_F$. Numerical homotopy continuation finds $512$, $4000$, and $6912$ isolated complexified solutions for $d=4,5,6$, respectively, exactly half Hermitian. Class-field calculations test the place law in $d=4,5,9,13$; an explicit reciprocity law is certified for computed overlaps in $d=5,7,11,15$ using Artin reciprocity and ray-class checks. No new SIC dimension or infinite family is constructed. The implication from Stark’s conjectures was already known; the remaining algebraic Stark and multiplet hypotheses are unproved. Solution counts are numerical, and algebraic certifications depend on numerically identified numbers.

Error found: The no-go lemma excludes ghost-to-SIC transformations by extended Clifford operations, but does not establish the abstract’s unrestricted claim about every symmetry of the SIC equations. The abstract presents the isolated-point enumeration as complete without mentioning that its completeness rests on uncertified numerical homotopy continuation. The single-prime equivalence in Proposition “class-field form of PL”(c) is not justified by separability alone, because the inverse of an overlap unit has not been shown to be one of its algebraic conjugates.

The overlap phases of SIC-POVMs

Xin Lü

Abstract A symmetric informationally complete positive-operator-valued measure (SIC-POVM) is a special type of generalized quantum measurements that possesses a high degree of symmetry. It plays an important role in quantum tomography, quantum cryptography and foundations of quantum mechanics. The most important and difficult problem about SIC-POVM is to show its existence in every dimension n, which is suggested by many numerical evidences. In this paper, this existence problem of SIC-POVMs is investigated by considering their overlap phases. Specifically, the symmetric requirements of SIC-POVMs are encoded into the overlap phases between the fiducial project and the n 2 displacement operators. In this way, an equivalent condition of the existence of Weyl-Heisenberg group covariant SIC-POVMs is obtained in terms of these phases, so that a set of complex equations is established, which enables one to study the existence problem in a more explicit and direct fashion. In particular, we show that all the numbers appearing in the overlap phases have to be algebraic numbers. The significance of Zauner’s conjecture in our equivalent condition is also discussed, and therefore the SIC-POVMs in dimension four is constructed explicitly. Actually, our system of equations always admits a solution, the real difficulty lies in how to ensure these complex number solutions are of norm one, and therefore indeed phases. Our result shows that constructing SIC-POVMs from the overlap phases is possible, and symmetries can be applied directly to reduce the number of equations, so that it provide new insights into the difficult problem of SIC-POVMs, especially about the algebraic properties of these overlap phases.

Galois automorphisms of a symmetric measurement

Symmetric Informationally Complete Positive Operator Valued Measures (usually referred to as SIC-POVMs or simply as SICs) have been constructed in every dimension $\le 67$. However, a proof that they exist in every finite dimension has yet to be constructed. In this paper we examine the Galois group of SICs covariant with respect to the Weyl-Heisenberg group (or WH SICs as we refer to them). The great majority (though not all) of the known examples are of this type. Scott and Grassl have noted that every known exact WH SIC is expressible in radicals (except for dimension $3$ which is exceptional in this and several other respects), which means that the corresponding Galois group is solvable. They have also calculated the Galois group for most known exact examples. The purpose of this paper is to take the analysis of Scott and Grassl further. We first prove a number of theorems regarding the structure of the Galois group and the relation between it and the extended Clifford group. We then examine the Galois group for the known exact fiducials and on the basis of this we propose a list of nine conjectures concerning its structure. These conjectures represent a considerable strengthening of the theorems we have actually been able to prove. Finally we generalize the concept of an anti-unitary to the concept of a $g$-unitary, and show that every WH SIC fiducial is an eigenvector of a family of $g$-unitaries (apart from dimension 3).

A Constructive Approach to Zauner's Conjecture via the Stark Conjectures

Marcus Appleby, Steven T. Flammia, Gene S. Kopp

We propose a construction of $d^2$ complex equiangular lines in $\mathbb{C}^d$, also known as SICPOVMs, conjectured by Zauner to exist for all d. The construction gives a putatively complete list of SICs with Weyl-Heisenberg symmetry in all dimensions d > 3. Specifically, we give an explicit expression for an object we call a ghost SIC, which is constructed from the real multiplication values of a special function and which is Galois conjugate to a SIC. The special function, the Shintani-Faddeev modular cocycle, is more precisely a tuple of meromorphic functions indexed by a congruence subgroup of ${\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$. We prove our construction gives a valid SIC in every case assuming two conjectures: the order 1 abelian Stark conjecture for real quadratic fields and a special value identity for the Shintani-Faddeev modular cocycle. The former allows us to prove that the ghost and the SIC are Galois conjugate over an extension of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrtΔ)$ where $Δ= (d+1)(d-3)$, while the latter allows us to prove idempotency of the presumptive fiducial projector. We provide computational tests of our SIC construction by cross-validating it with known solutions, particularly the extensive work of Scott and Grassl, and by constructing four numerical examples of nonequivalent SICs in d=100, three of which are new. We further consider rank-r generalizations called r-SICs given by maximal equichordal configurations of r-dimensional complex subspaces. We give similar conditional constructions for r-SICs for all r, d such that r(d-r) divides $(d^2-1)$. Finally, we study the structure of the field extensions conjecturally generated by the r-SICs. If K is any real quadratic field, then either every abelian Galois extension of K, or else every abelian extension for which 2 is unramified, is generated by our construction; the former holds for a positive density of field discriminants.
