Abstract

We study general $(r,δ)$-quantum locally recoverable codes (qLRCs) without assuming purity or a stabilizer structure, and with arbitrarily overlapping recovery blocks. Using a selection lemma for multiple-erasure recovery, we establish a Singleton-like upper bound for general quantum subspaces. When $δ=2$, this bound reduces to the general single-erasure bound of Golowich and Guruswami. An integer optimization yields an explicit remainder correction that tightens the bound by up to $δ-2$. For pure codes, local decoupling and entropy arguments extend the parameter bound of Galindo et al., originally obtained for pure stabilizer codes constructed from Euclidean or Hermitian dual-containing classical codes, to arbitrary pure quantum subspaces. We also remove the partition assumption from several existing pure-code bounds for disjoint recovery blocks and obtain a further remainder correction by optimizing the budget. Finally, we analyze three families attaining these bounds: pure codes with overlapping recovery blocks and $d=δ$, which exhibit both a strict improvement of the pure-code bound and simultaneous equality in the pure-code and general bounds; impure codes with disjoint recovery blocks attaining the general bound; and an existing family of pure codes with overlapping recovery blocks and $d>δ$, which simultaneously attains all these bounds.

AI Summary

The paper studies dimension–distance bounds for $(r,\delta)$ quantum locally recoverable codes when recovery blocks may overlap, without assuming purity or stabilizer structure. Each coordinate belongs to a block of size at most $r+\delta-1$ that locally corrects any $\delta-1$ erasures. Writing $t=\delta-1$, $b=r+t$, $D=d-1$, $L=n-2D$, and $A=t\lfloor(n-D)/b\rfloor$, the general bound is $k\le L-A-t\lfloor(L-A)/b\rfloor$, where $k=\log_q K$. Integer optimization improves this by at most $\delta-2$. At $\delta=2$, it recovers the Golowich–Guruswami single-erasure bound. The proof uses a two-stage selection lemma accommodating overlapping blocks, followed by construction of two disjoint correctable erasure sets and an entropy bound. For pure subspace codes, local decoupling gives $k\le n-2D-2tM-2\max\{0,v-r\}$, where $n-D=bM+v$ and $0\le v<b$. This extends existing construction-specific and disjoint-block parameter bounds to arbitrary pure subspaces. Equality conditions constrain block intersections and force local MDS structure. For $\mathbb F_q$-linear stabilizer codes at minimal locality $r=\delta$, removing fixed pure-state coordinate factors forces disjoint $\llbracket2\delta-1,1,\delta\rrbracket_q$ inner blocks concatenated with an outer stabilizer code. Consequently, $\delta\mid d$ and $k\le\lfloor n/(2\delta-1)\rfloor-2d/\delta+2$; suitable Reed–Solomon constructions attain this bound. Attaining examples include pure CSS codes with unavoidable overlaps, impure concatenated codes, and an existing overlapping family with $d>\delta$. The decomposition requires field-linear stabilizers. The full attainable parameter range, alphabet-dependent bounds without partitions, and structural extensions beyond that class remain open.

Bounds for Pure Disjoint $(r,δ)$-Quantum Locally Recoverable Codes

Evagoras Stylianou, Holger Boche

We study pure disjoint $(r,δ)$-quantum locally recoverable codes (qLRCs) without assuming a stabilizer structure. We formulate local Knill--Laflamme conditions for recovery from up to $δ-1$ erasures within a recovery block, and introduce blockwise Shor--Laflamme and unitary weight enumerators that capture how error weight is distributed across recovery sets. We establish several properties of these enumerators and use them to derive a Singleton-like bound that strengthens the known bound for disjoint $(r,δ)$-qLRCs under a purity assumption, as well as a linear-programming upper bound on the code dimension. These results provide a non-stabilizer, weight-enumerator-based approach to the study of pure disjoint $(r,δ)$-qLRCs.

Entanglement assisted quantum $(r,δ)$-locally recoverable codes

Carlos Galindo, Fernando Hernando, Helena Martín-Cruz +1 more

Quantum $(r,δ)$-locally recoverable codes are quantum error-correcting codes capable of correcting $δ-1$ qudit erasures within one subset of qudits of cardinality at most $r+δ-1$. In this paper, we introduce the more general framework of entanglement-assisted quantum $(r,δ)$-locally recoverable codes, assuming that the local recovery operation is assisted by receiver-held qudits that remain unaffected by erasures. We establish necessary and sufficient conditions for these codes to satisfy this property. For codes derived from Hermitian or Euclidean constructions, we establish connections between entanglement-assisted quantum and classical notions of $(r,δ)$-local recoverability, and derive a Singleton-like bound. Furthermore, we construct optimal pure entan\-gle\-ment-assisted quantum $(r,δ)$-locally recoverable codes from several families of classical codes, including bivariate $J$-affine variety codes, BCH codes, and homothetic-BCH codes.

Optimal pure quantum $(r,δ)$-locally recoverable codes from matrix-product construction

Galindo, Carlos, Fernando Hernando, Carlos Munuera +1 more

Locally recoverable codes (LRCs) are classical error-correcting codes widely used in large-scale distributed and cloud storage systems. Quantum locally recoverable codes of locality $(r,δ)$ (quantum $(r,δ)$-LRCs) are the quantum counterpart of classical $(r,δ)$-LRCs. They allow us to correct erasures at several positions using a trace-preserving quantum operation acting on qudits of a larger set of positions. Quantum $(r,δ)$-LRCs, $\mathcal{Q}(\mathcal{C})$, can be constructed from classical Euclidean (or Hermitian) dual-containing codes $\mathcal{C}$, and their recovery abilities are upper bounded by the minimum distance of the Euclidean (or Hermitian) dual of those codes. Parameters and localities of pure quantum $(r,δ)$-LRCs satisfy a Singleton-like bound; codes attaining equality are referred to as optimal. We consider matrix-product codes (MPCs) $\mathcal{C}$ and give constituent (or defining) matrices and conditions on the constituent codes such that the codes $\mathcal{C}$ satisfy the conditions to provide quantum $(r,δ)$-LRCs. As a consequence, we are able to determine their locality and parameters. Furthermore, we determine families of optimal pure quantum $(r,δ)$-LRCs derived from them.

Entanglement-Assisted Quantum Locally Recoverable Codes: Characterizations, Bounds, and Constructions

Yang Li, San Ling, Zhenliang Lu +2 more

Quantum locally recoverable codes (qLRCs) allow a single qudit erasure to be corrected by accessing only a small number of other qudits. Standard CSS and Hermitian constructions, however, impose dual-containing or self-orthogonal constraints on the underlying classical codes, thereby restricting the well-structured classical LRCs (cLRCs) that can be used to construct qLRCs. To relax these constraints, we introduce entanglement-assisted quantum locally recoverable codes (EAQLRCs) by assuming that halves of the pre-shared maximally entangled pairs are noiseless. We characterize sufficient support conditions on extended stabilizers under which entanglement-assisted stabilizer codes have locality $r$ and derive a CSS-like construction from two classical codes without imposing the ordinary dual-containing condition. We further establish an upper bound on locality and a Singleton-like bound for arbitrary CSS-like EAQLRCs, and characterize the pure codes attaining equality in the latter bound. These results yield a general framework for constructing optimal pure EAQLRCs from pairs of cLRCs. Applying this framework to $\ell$-intersection pairs of MDS codes and block parity-check matrices, we obtain two families of optimal pure CSS-like EAQLRCs with flexible parameters and nontrivial localities. To the best of our knowledge, these represent the first explicit families of EAQLRCs.

CSS Quantum LRCs with Intersecting Recovery Sets: Constructions and Bounds

Evagoras Stylianou, Vinayak Ramkumar, Holger Boche +1 more

In this work, we study $(r,t,x)$ quantum locally recoverable codes (qLRCs) with locality $r$, $t$ recovery sets per qudit, and intersection parameter $x$. We first show that, assuming the underlying classical codes have dual minimum distance at least two, a CSS code is an $(r,t,x)$-qLRC if and only if the underlying classical codes are $(r,t,x)$ classical LRCs (cLRCs) with common recovery sets. We then use subset-inclusion matrices to construct families of binary dual-containing $(r,t,x)$-cLRCs, which yield binary $(r,t,x)$-qLRCs via the CSS construction. For CSS $(r,t,x)$-qLRCs, we derive upper bounds on the dimension and rate, minimum-distance bounds in the pure case, and a Singleton-like dimension bound in the exact case. Finally, we show that these families attain high rates and nontrivial minimum distances.

Quantum Hierarchical Locally Recoverable Codes

Venkatesan Guruswami, Rutuja Kshirsagar, Pranav Trivedi

Quantum locally recoverable codes (QLRCs) have recently gained attention as a framework for achieving efficient quantum storage with local recovery capabilities. Analogous to their classical counterparts, QLRCs allow a lost qudit to be reconstructed using only a small subset of other qudits, thereby reducing the resource and operational overhead in recovery. In this work, we extend the study of QLRCs by considering $(r,δ)$ QLRCs characterized by locality parameter $r$ and local distance $δ\geq 2$. We present constructions of both random and explicit $(r,δ)$ QLRCs, including explicit families based on the quantum Tamo--Barg construction. We also present an efficient decoding algorithm for these quantum Tamo--Barg codes. Furthermore, we introduce quantum \emph{hierarchical} locally recoverable codes (QHLRCs), which extend local recovery to multiple hierarchical levels. For any integer $h\geq 2$, we construct both random and explicit $h$-level QHLRCs, the latter being $h$-level quantum Tamo--Barg codes, and establish a Singleton-like bound for these codes using a CSS framework built from dual-containing classical codes. These results advance the theoretical foundations of quantum erasure recovery and contribute to the design of efficient quantum storage architectures.
