We derive normalized geometric factors for permutation-twist correlators at arbitrary genus. For three uniformly ramified branch values, hypergeometric uniformization shows that the real part of the continued conical-defect exponent equals the covering-space anomaly factor. Its imaginary part is an Euler-characteristic Weyl phase. We extend the normalization to additional branch values, derive higher replica-index corrections to the geometric multi-entropy, and state the extra condition required for a holographic limit. A reducible conformal/topological example demonstrates why large central charge alone does not fix the complete entanglement result.

This note presents a purely geometric construction of the so-called twist-field correlation functions in Conformal Field Theory (CFT), derived from conical singularities. This approach provides a purely mathematical interpretation of the seminal results in physics by Cardy and Calabrese on the entanglement entropy of quantum systems. Specifically, we begin by defining CFT partition functions on surfaces with conical singularities, using a ``Cauchy-Hadamard renormalization'' of the Polyakov anomaly integral. Next, we demonstrate that for a branched cover f:Σd→Σ with d sheets, where the cover inherits the pullback of a smooth metric from the base, a specific ratio of partition functions on the cover to the base transforms under conformal changes of the base metric in the same way as a correlation function of CFT primary fields with specific conformal weights. We also provide a discussion of the physical background and motivation for entanglement entropy, focusing on path integrals and the replica trick, which serves as an introduction to these ideas for a mathematical audience.
We study whether the relations between the Weyl anomaly, entanglement entropy (EE), and thermal entropy of a two-dimensional (2D) conformal field theory (CFT) extend to 2D boundaries of 3D CFTs, or 2D defects of D≥3 CFTs. The Weyl anomaly of a 2D boundary or defect defines two or three central charges, respectively. One of these, b, obeys a c theorem, as in 2D CFT. For a 2D defect, we show that another, d_{2}, interpreted as the defect's "conformal dimension," must be non-negative if the averaged null energy condition holds in the presence of the defect. We show that the EE of a sphere centered on a planar defect has a logarithmic contribution from the defect fixed by b and d_{2}. Using this and known holographic results, we compute b and d_{2} for 1/2-Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield surface operators in the maximally supersymmetric (SUSY) 4D and 6D CFTs. The results are consistent with b's c theorem. Via free field and holographic examples we show that no universal "Cardy formula" relates the central charges to thermal entropy.
The entanglement entropy of a generic d-dimensional conformal field theory receives a regulator independent contribution when the entangling surface contains a (hyper)conical singularity of opening angle Ω, codified in a function a (d)(Ω). In arXiv:1505.04804 , we proposed that for three-dimensional conformal field theories, the coefficient σ (3) characterizing the limit where the surface becomes smooth is proportional to the central charge C T appearing in the two-point function of the stress tensor. In this paper, we prove this relation for general three-dimensional holographic theories, and extend the result to general dimensions. In particular, we define a generalized coefficient σ (d) to characterize the almost smooth limit of a (hyper)conical singularity in entangling surfaces in higher dimensions. We show then that this coefficient is universally related to C T for general holographic theories and provide a general formula for the ratio σ (d) /C T in arbitrary dimensions. We conjecture that the latter ratio is universal for general CFTs. Further, based on our recent results in arXiv:1507.06997 , we propose an extension of this relation to general Rényi entropies, which we show passes several consistency checks in d = 4 and 6.
We formulate timelike entanglement entropy and its Rényi extension in two-dimensional conformal field theory through the analytic continuation of replica twist correlators to time-ordered, timelike-separated insertions. This field-theoretic construction grounds and generalizes recent developments, and applies to temporal subregions of arbitrary extent. Within three-dimensional holography, the semiclassical boundary correlator identifies boundary-anchored complex geodesics as the relevant bulk saddles and selects the one with the smallest real part of the length. This provides a direct boundary derivation of the proposed complex extremal surface prescription and extends to Rényi index n>1, for which we explicitly construct the corresponding complex cosmic brane geometry in the vacuum. We develop these ideas in several representative settings, including locally and globally excited states and quantum operator quenches, making manifest the precise agreement between boundary twist correlator and bulk complex geodesic calculations. For AdS-Vaidya, our approach predicts a different result from earlier piecewise geodesic constructions, while reproducing the field theory answer. Across these examples, the operator ordering uniquely determines the imaginary part of the complex-valued entropy, which is quantized in units of cπ/6 and sensitive to the effective causal structure but not to the underlying dynamics.
We consider conformal blocks of two heavy operators and an arbitrary number of light operators in a (1+1)-d CFT with large central charge. Using the monodromy method, these higher-point conformal blocks are shown to factorize into products of 4-point conformal blocks in the heavy-light limit for a class of OPE channels. This result is reproduced by considering suitable worldline configurations in the bulk conical defect geometry. We apply the CFT results to calculate the entanglement entropy of an arbitrary number of disjoint intervals for heavy states. The corresponding holographic entanglement entropy calculated via the minimal area prescription precisely matches these results from CFT. Along the way, we briefly illustrate the relation of these conformal blocks to Riemann surfaces and their associated moduli space.
We study holographic entanglement entropy in 3-dimensional AdS gravity with conformal boundary conditions which fix the conformal class of the boundary metric and its extrinsic curvature, K, while leaving the Weyl mode dynamical. Extending Lewkowycz-Maldacena-Dong's replica construction, we derive the corresponding holographic entanglement entropy formula. We show that the fluctuating Weyl mode does not contribute additional entropy. The entropy of the full boundary is therefore the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy, and the entropy of a boundary subregion continues to obey the Ryu-Takayanagi prescription, namely, the area of a minimal surface divided by 4GN. We carry out explicit calculations for global AdS, rotating and non-rotating BTZ geometries. For an interval in AdS3 we find that the K-dependent holographic entanglement entropy is governed by cm=2GN3ℓ. For a thermal state at high conformal temperatures we find that, the entropy is governed by ceff=2GN3ℓ2Kℓ−K2ℓ2−4, the same effective central charge that governs the Cardy-like density of states, in agreement with previous results in the literature. Finally, we also compute the entanglement entropy directly from the conjectured dual boundary theory - a holographic CFT coupled with time-like Liouville theory and deformed by a marginal TTˉ like operator - and find SEE=3ceffln(ε2Rsinϕ0). This result for the state with no operator insertions (vacuum state ), provides an independent boundary realization of ceff while clarifying that this state is not the state dual to global AdS.
