Abstract

In this paper, we determine the complete ground-state spaces for a broad class of generalized stabilizer quantum models defined over CW-decompositions of non-compact manifolds of arbitrary dimensions and topological type. We introduce a $C^*$-algebraic framework in which the quantum spin algebra $\A$ is realized as the twisted group $C^*$-algebra of an infinite discrete Pauli module $P$ endowed with a symplectic structure. We establish a correspondence between stabilizer models and isotropic subgroups of $P$: Every Lagrangian extension of such a subgroup determines a $C^*$-diagonal of $\A$, whose Weyl groupoid encodes the dynamics through a continuous 1-cocycle. This realization yields an explicit family of extremal ground-states for every admissible Lagrangian model, together with their decomposition into sectors. When the sector space is $T_0$, this gives a complete characterization of the ground-state spaces. We also prove that every Lagrangian stabilizer model admits a unique frustration-free ground state with a spectral gap. Our framework applies in arbitrary dimension, including higher abelian quantum doubles, homological codes, and a broad class of stabilizer models.

Pauli Stabilizer Models of Twisted Quantum Doubles

Tyler D. Ellison, Yu-An Chen, Arpit Dua +3 more

We construct a Pauli stabilizer model for every two-dimensional Abelian topological order that admits a gapped boundary. Our primary example is a Pauli stabilizer model on four-dimensional qudits that belongs to the double semion (DS) phase of matter. The DS stabilizer Hamiltonian is constructed by condensing an emergent boson in a Z 4 toric code, where the condensation is implemented at the level of the ground states by two-body measurements. We rigorously verify the topological order of the DS stabilizer model by identifying an explicit finite-depth quantum circuit (with ancillary qubits) that maps its ground-state subspace to that of a DS string-net model. We show that the construction of the DS stabilizer Hamiltonian generalizes to all twisted quantum doubles (TQDs) with Abelian anyons. This yields a Pauli stabilizer code on composite-dimensional qudits for each such TQD, implying that the classification of topological Pauli stabilizer codes extends well beyond stacks of toric codes-in fact, exhausting all Abelian anyon theories that admit a gapped boundary. We also demonstrate that symmetry-protected topological phases of matter characterized by type-I and type-II cocycles can be modeled by Pauli stabilizer Hamiltonians by gauging certain 1-form symmetries of the TQD stabilizer models.

Clifford-hierarchy stabilizer formalism with applications to twisted quantum doubles

Christopher Fechisin, Kieran Cooney, Mathi Raja +4 more

Recent work has shown that quantum double models can be used to circumvent the Bravyi-Koenig bound. In particular, this is achieved through code-switching protocols in which non-Pauli stabilizer phases appear as intermediate codes. We introduce the $X\mathcal C^{(k)}_d$ stabilizer formalism, which generalizes the Pauli stabilizer formalism by combining Pauli-$X$ operators with diagonal operators drawn from a fixed level $k$ of the Clifford hierarchy on prime-dimensional qudits. This yields a natural class of beyond-Pauli stabilizer models, including many twisted quantum double phases. We classify a large class of these $X\mathcal C^{(k)}_d$ stabilizer states, showing that they are uniform superpositions over affine-linear subspaces with diagonal phases. In particular, when the stabilizers of a state require operators from level $k$ of the Clifford hierarchy, we show that the diagonal gates required to produce the phases in the wavefunction sit one level higher. We further show that every 2D twisted quantum double ${\cal D}^ω(\mathbb{Z}_p^n)$ with $ω$ a product of type-III cocycles and $p$ an odd prime admits a realization using only Clifford ($k=2$) stabilizers, and we conjecture that phases where $ω$ contains a type-I or type-II cocycle require level-$p$ Clifford-hierarchy stabilizers for $p$-dimensional qudits. Finally, we demonstrate that a pair of qudit toric codes may be deterministically prepared in a logical magic state by measuring $X\mathcal C^{(k)}_d$ stabilizers. Together, these results provide a concrete stabilizer framework for topological codes beyond Pauli stabilizer models and their logical gates.

Higher Abelian Quantum Double Models

Flores, Jorge Acuña, Giuseppe De Nittis, J. Lorca Espiro

This paper develops a rigorous $C^*$-algebraic framework for higher abelian quantum double models, generalizing Kitaev's construction to simplicial complexes of arbitrary finite dimension and local regularity. We fully characterize the frustration-free ground state space through an associated algebra of logical operators: its state space is shown to be homeomorphic to the space of frustration-free ground states, and to obey generalized canonical commutation relations. When the relevant homology and cohomology groups are finite, the logical algebra decomposes into a commutative factor and a full matrix algebra, thereby separating the classical and quantum parts of the frustration-free ground state structure. We further prove that the vanishing of these groups is necessary and sufficient for the core algebra of the model to form a Cartan pair with the full algebra of observables, a property expected to pave the way toward classifying the model's equilibrium (KMS) states, extending recent results for the planar case.

Pauli stabilizer formalism for topological quantum field theories and generalized statistics

Yitao Feng, Hanyu Xue, Ryohei Kobayashi +2 more

Topological quantum field theory (TQFT) provides a unifying framework for describing topological phases of matter and for constructing quantum error-correcting codes, playing a central role across high-energy physics, condensed matter, and quantum information. A central challenge is to formulate topological order on lattices and to extract the properties of topological excitations from microscopic Hamiltonians. In this work, we construct new classes of lattice gauge theories as Pauli stabilizer models, realizing a wide range of TQFTs in general dimensions. We develop a lattice description of extended excitations and systematically determine their generalized statistics. Our main example is the (4+1)D fermionic-loop toric code, obtained by condensing the $e^2m^2$-loop in the (4+1)D $\mathbb Z_4$ toric code. We show that the loop excitation exhibits fermionic loop statistics: the 24-step loop-flipping process yields a phase of $-1$. Our Pauli stabilizer models realize all twisted 2-form gauge theories in (4+1)D, the higher-form Dijkgraaf-Witten TQFT classified by $H^5(B^2G,U(1))$. Beyond (4+1)D, the fermionic-loop toric codes form a family of $\mathbb Z_2$ topological orders in arbitrary dimensions, realized as explicit Pauli stabilizer codes using $\mathbb Z_4$ qudits. Finally, we develop a Pauli-based framework that defines generalized statistics for extended excitations in any dimension, yielding computable lattice unitary processes to detect nontrivial statistics. For example, we propose anyonic membrane statistics in (6+1)D, as well as fermionic membrane and volume statistics in arbitrary dimensions. We construct new families of $\mathbb Z_2$ topological orders: the fermionic-membrane toric code and the fermionic-volume toric code. In addition, we demonstrate that $p$-dimensional excitations in $2p+2$ spatial dimensions can support anyonic $p$-brane statistics for only even $p$.

Many-body models for topological quantum information

Courtney G Brell

We develop and investigate several quantum many-body spin models of use for topological quantum information processing and storage. These models fall into two categories: those that are designed to be more realistic than alternative models with similar phenomenology, and those that are designed to have richer phenomenology than related models. In the first category, we present a procedure to obtain the Hamiltonians of the toric code and Kitaev quantum double models as the perturbative low-energy limits of entirely two-body Hamiltonians. This construction reproduces the target models' behavior using only couplings which are natural in terms of the original Hamiltonians. As an extension of this work, we construct parent Hamiltonians involving only local 2-body interactions for a broad class of Projected Entangled Pair States (PEPS). We define a perturbative Hamiltonian with a finite order low energy effective Hamiltonian that is a gapped, frustration-free parent Hamiltonian for an encoded version of a desired PEPS. For topologically ordered PEPS, the ground space of the low energy effective Hamiltonian is shown to be in the same phase as the desired state to all orders of perturbation theory. We then move on to define models that generalize the phenomenology of several well-known systems. We first define generalized cluster states based on finite group algebras, and investigate properties of these states including their PEPS representations, global symmetries, relationship to the Kitaev quantum double models, and possible applications. Finally, we propose a generalization of the color codes based on finite groups. For non-Abelian groups, the resulting model supports non-Abelian anyonic quasiparticles and topological order. We examine the properties of these models such as their relationship to Kitaev quantum double models, quasiparticle spectrum, and boundary structure.

Qudit stabilizer codes, CFTs, and topological surfaces

Matthew Buican, Rajath Radhakrishnan

We study general maps from the space of rational conformal field theories (CFTs) with a fixed chiral algebra and associated Chern-Simons (CS) theories to the space of qudit stabilizer codes with a fixed generalized Pauli group. We consider certain natural constraints on such a map and show that the map can be described as a graph homomorphism from an orbifold graph, which captures the orbifold structure of CFTs, to a code graph, which captures the structure of self-dual stabilizer codes. By studying explicit examples, we show that this graph homomorphism cannot always be a graph embedding. However, we construct a physically motivated map from universal orbifold subgraphs of CFTs to operators in a generalized Pauli group. We show that this map results in a self-dual stabilizer code if and only if the surface operators in the bulk CS theories corresponding to the CFTs in question are self-dual. For CFTs admitting a stabilizer code description, we show that the full Abelianized generalized Pauli group can be obtained from twisted sectors of certain 0-form symmetries of the CFT. Finally, we connect our construction with SymTFTs, and we argue that many equivalences between codes that arise in our setup correspond to equivalence classes of bulk topological surfaces under fusion with invertible surfaces.
