A New Non-Affine Family in the Karlsson-Szollosi Intersection

Abstract

We show that $K_6^{(2)} \cap X_6^{(2)} = D_6^{(1)} \cup C_6^{(1)}$ up to standard Hadamard equivalence, where $C_6^{(1)}$ is a new non-affine one-parameter family of complex Hadamard matrices. This demonstrates that the intersection of the two-parameter Hadamard families of Karlsson and Szöllősi is strictly larger than the known affine Diţă curve $D_6^{(1)}$. Our new parametrisation of the Szöllősi family $X_6^{(2)}$ in Karlsson coordinates and our constructive classification of the Karlsson-Szöllősi intersection shed light on the intersection of block-reducible forms and hypocycloid constraints. This may support the search for mutually unbiased bases in six dimensions.

AI Summary

The paper determines the overlap, up to standard Hadamard equivalence, between Karlsson’s and Szöllősi’s two-parameter families of order-six complex Hadamard matrices, $K_6^{(2)}$ and $X_6^{(2)}$. The known affine Diţă curve $D_6^{(1)}$ lies in both; the question is whether it exhausts their intersection. The main result is $K_6^{(2)}\cap X_6^{(2)}=D_6^{(1)}\cup C_6^{(1)}$, where $C_6^{(1)}$ is a new non-affine one-real-parameter family. An explicit dephased representative is constructed from unit phases $u,v$ satisfying $|(1+u)(1+v)|=2$. In angular coordinates this becomes $\cos(\alpha/2)\cos(\beta/2)=1/2$. The paper proves non-affineness and membership in both parent families. The new family is distinct from the Diţă curve but intersects it at the Diţă matrix. The construction uses an explicit parametrisation of Szöllősi matrices in Karlsson block coordinates, with three permutation charts handling coordinate degeneracies. Completeness is established by enumerating all $225$ independent row-pair and column-pair decompositions into $2\times2$ blocks. These comprise three generic frames, $168$ algebraically empty conditional frames, $27$ Diţă frames, and $27$ further conditional frames assigned to $C_6^{(1)}$. The conditional classification is computer-assisted and exact, using polynomial ideals, Gröbner-basis reductions, and explicit equivalence certificates. The scope is the intersection of these particular order-six families, not the full Hadamard space. Connections to mutually unbiased bases in dimension six and to higher composite dimensions remain motivations and possible applications; no new mutually unbiased configuration or existence bound is established.

Central claim may not hold: The exhaustive intersection proof relies on Lemma 4.2, whose claimed necessary generic-frame conditions are contradicted by a physical matrix admitting a repeated-boundary presentation after within-pair orientation reversals.

A new method to construct families of complex Hadamard matrices in even dimensions

Dardo Goyeneche

We present a new method for constructing affine families of complex Hadamard matrices in every even dimension. This method has an intersection with Diţă’s construction and generalizes Szöllősi's method. We extend some known families and present new ones existing in even dimensions. In particular, we find more than 13 millon inequivalent affine families in dimension 32. We also find analytical restrictions for any set of four mutually unbiased bases existing in dimension six and for any family of complex Hadamard matrices existing in every odd dimension.

An exact MUB triple in dimension six with two Fourier edges

Adian Jaupi

In this research, I constructed an exact algebraic triple of mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) in ℂ⁶ consisting of the computational basis, a member D(ρ) of the Diţă slice from Karlsson's three-parameter family, and an explicit third basis B. Through exact symbolic computation over a degree-96 number field extension, I proved that both remaining transition matrices in the triple belong precisely to the two-parameter Fourier family F(a,b) up to equivalence and transposition, revealing that the Diţă-slice matrix factors directly into a product of two Fourier-type Hadamard matrices. Applying the theorem of Jaming et al., I established that both Fourier edges are non-extendable, proving the triple cannot be extended to any MUB quartet. Additionally, I derived a closed-form expression D(z) for the entire Diţă slice, resolved degeneracies in Karlsson's Möbius parametrization, and computed its 2×2 Hadamard submatrices exactly (51 generically and 75 at z=1), while identifying a second exact Fourier-Fourier triangle at z=1. Finally, using homotopy continuation to track witness systems across seven slice parameters, I recovered 40 third bases that all preserved this Fourier-Fourier pattern to residuals within 5×10⁻¹⁵, providing strong numerical backing for a global structural conjecture along the full Diţă slice.

A Complete Classification of Complex Hadamard Matrices of Order Six

Mateo Cárdenes Wuttig, Joseph Tindall

Complex Hadamard matrices encode perfectly balanced unitary transformations. Their classification is complete through order five, but order six -- the first dimension in which several continuous families coexist with an isolated solution -- has remained open for decades. Here, we give a complete and exact finite-incidence classification of order-six complex Hadamard matrices up to standard equivalence. We supply the global step missing from Szöllősi's dilation method, which allows us to prove an even stronger version of his conjecture: every complex Hadamard matrix of order six can be recovered algebraically from a suitable, dephased $3 \times 3$ corner defined by four initial phases. We then describe the geometry of the reconstruction from these phases and show that, except for Tao's isolated matrix and a single explicit Karlsson matrix, every class admits a representative obtained by solving one quadratic and one cubic equation in both the horizontal and vertical directions. Our work resolves the classification problem and provides a rigorous framework for further investigating order-six Hadamards, with applications to balanced six-mode interferometers and the study of mutually unbiased bases.

A two-parameter family of complex Hadamard matrices of order 6 induced by hypocycloids

Ferenc Szöllősi

We construct a 2 2 -parameter family of complex Hadamard matrices of order 6 6 by a natural block construction. We combine this family with an earlier result of Zauner to derive a 2 2 -parameter family of triplets of mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) in C 6 \mathbb C^6 . This invalidates some numerical evidence given by Brierley and Weigert and sheds new light on the problem of determining the maximal number of MUBs in C 6 \mathbb C^6 .

Towards a classification of $6\times 6$ complex Hadamard matrices

Máté Matolcsi, Ferenc Szöllősi

Complex Hadamard matrices have received considerable attention in the past few years due to their appearance in quantum information theory. While a complete characterization is currently available only up to order 5 (in \cite{haagerup}), several new constructions of higher order matrices have appeared recently \cite{dita, karol, BN, MM, sz}. In particular, the classification of {\it self-adjoint} complex Hadamard matrices of order 6 was completed by Beuachamp and Nicoara in \cite{BN}, providing a previously unknown non-affine one-parameter orbit. In this paper we classify all \emph{dephased, symmetric} complex Hadamard matrices \emph{with real diagonal} of order 6. Furthermore, relaxing the condition on the diagonal entries we obtain a new non-affine one-parameter orbit connecting the Fourier matrix $F_6$ and Diţă's matrix $D_6$. This answers a recent question of Bengtsson & al. in \cite{BB}.

Towards a Classification of 6 × 6 Complex Hadamard Matrices

Máté Matolcsi, Ferenc Szöllősi

Complex Hadamard matrices have received considerable attention in the past few years due to their application in quantum information theory. While a complete characterization currently available [5] is only up to order 5, several new constructions of higher order matrices have appeared recently [4, 12, 2, 7, 11]. In particular, the classification of self-adjoint complex Hadamard matrices of order 6 was completed by Beuachamp and Nicoara in [2], providing a previously unknown non-affine one-parameter orbit. In this paper we classify all dephased, symmetric complex Hadamard matrices with real diagonal of order 6. Furthermore, relaxing the condition on the diagonal entries we obtain a new non-affine one-parameter orbit connecting the Fourier matrix F6 and Diţă's matrix D6. This answers a recent question of Bengtsson et al. [3].

We show that K6(2)∩X6(2)=D6(1)∪C6(1)K_6^{(2)} \cap X_6^{(2)} = D_6^{(1)} \cup C_6^{(1)}K6(2)∩X6(2)=D6(1)∪C6(1) up to standard Hadamard equivalence, where C6(1)C_6^{(1)}C6(1) is a new non-affine one-parameter family of complex Hadamard matrices.
