In strictly one-dimensional lattices, free fermions and hard-core bosons exhibit equivalent physical properties in many-particle systems. However, this statistical equivalence generally breaks down upon moving to higher dimensions. Our work investigates the significant effects of this difference on the topological phase transition in a minimal system lying away from one dimension: the two-leg Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) ladder. Starting in the limit of two decoupled SSH chains having opposite hopping dimerization patterns (staggered dimerization), we demonstrate that introducing inter-leg coupling drives a transition from a topological to a trivial phase for both spinless fermions and hard-core bosons. However, the topological to trivial phase transition boundary is strongly sensitive to the underlying particle statistics. We find that this intriguing effect favors a trivial phase sandwiched between the two topological phases with opposite characters for the case of hard-core bosons, resulting in a reentrant topological phase transition. In contrast, this reentrant phenomenon is absent for spinless fermions, with the topological phases being separated by a gapless line instead of an intervening trivial phase. This study demonstrates the interplay between particle statistics and topological features, revealing fundamentally different properties in an experimentally accessible set-up.

We study the topological properties of hardcore bosons on a two-leg ladder consisting of two Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chains that are coupled via hopping and interaction. We chart out the phase diagram for the system and show that based on the relative hopping dimerization pattern along the legs, distinctly different topological phases and phase transitions can occur. When the dimerization along the legs is uniform, we find that the topological nature vanishes for even the slightest rung hopping. For staggered dimerization, the system exhibits a well-defined topological character and a topological phase transition as a function of rung hopping. While the topological phase shows bond order character, the trivial phase shows the behavior of a rung-Mott insulator. For this case, the topological nature is found to survive even in the presence of finite interleg interactions. Moreover, we find that the critical point of the topological phase transition shifts to a higher or a lower rung hopping strength depending on the attractive or repulsive nature of the interaction. To highlight the marked effects of interactions, we propose a scheme involving a Thouless charge pump that provides insights for the topological phases characterized by a quantized particle transport through a periodic modulation of appropriate system parameters. In our studies, we show an interaction-induced charge pumping following specific pumping protocols in the case of staggered dimerization.
We investigate the ground state properties of spinless fermions on a two leg ladder, by allowing the nearest-neighbour hopping dimerization in one leg and uniform hopping in the other. In the non-interacting limit, we find that, at half-filling, the system exhibits robust topological behavior if the inter-leg hopping is allowed. Though depending on the dimerization pattern, the dimerized leg can be either topological or trivial in nature, here we show that by connecting such a leg to a uniform leg through inter-chain coupling, the overall system becomes topological irrespective of the dimerization pattern in the dimerized leg. As a result, a topological phase transition occurs as a function of the inter-leg hopping. When the inter-leg interaction is turned on, the topological phase survives, and we obtain an interaction induced topological phase transition. Finally, we reveal that when uniform interactions are included on all the bonds of the ladder, the topological phase transitions to a symmetry-broken charge-density wave (CDW) phase.
Quasi-one-dimensional or ladder models serve as a bridge between one-dimensional and two-dimensional models, providing a simplified framework for incorporating intricate physics. In this study, we extend the concept of the momentum-state lattice by introducing couplings between next-nearest-neighbor sites throughout the entire momentum chain to simulate the staggered Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) ladder model. This ladder model is a direct extension of the well-known SSH model, recognized as a fundamental progression in modeling systems. Through this model, we explore compelling physical phenomena and successfully replicate the topological phase diagram of the Kitaev-Majorana chain. Utilizing time-averaged mean displacements of wave packets as a metric, we ascertain the topological invariants of the model. By varying staggered dimerization and interchain hopping parameters, we map out the topological phase diagram of the staggered SSH ladder, elucidating the presence of three distinct phases classified by their winding numbers: W = + 1 , 0, and − 1 , respectively.
We investigate the non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE) and topological phases in a ladder model with staggered nonreciprocal inter-leg hopping, consisting of an Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chain coupled to a normal tight-binding chain. By tuning the system parameters, we show that the direction of the NHSE under open boundary conditions can be reversed and can even become energy dependent. The NHSE is further characterized by the spectral winding number under periodic boundary conditions. We further demonstrate that the inter-leg coupling significantly enlarges the topologically nontrivial parameter regime. Remarkably, the zero-energy topological edge modes reside on different legs of the ladder and are characterized by real-space winding numbers W=±1. Furthermore, increasing the nonreciprocity of the inter-leg hopping modifies the topological phase boundaries and eventually drives the system into a topologically trivial phase. Our results establish staggered nonreciprocal inter-leg hopping as an effective mechanism for engineering both the non-Hermitian skin effect and topological phases in ladder systems.
One-dimensional free fermions and hard-core bosons are often considered to be equivalent. Indeed, when restricted to nearest-neighbor hopping on a chain, the particles cannot exchange themselves, and therefore hardly experience their own statistics. Apart from the off-diagonal correlations which depend on the so-called Jordan-Wigner string, real-space observables are similar for free fermions and hard-core bosons on a chain. Interestingly, by coupling only two chains, thus forming a two-leg ladder, particle exchange becomes allowed and leads to a totally different physics between free fermions and hard-core bosons. Using a combination of analytical (strong coupling, field theory, renormalization group) and numerical (quantum Monte Carlo, density-matrix renormalization group) approaches, we study the apparently simple but nontrivial model of hard-core bosons hopping in a two-leg ladder geometry. At half filling, while a band insulator appears for fermions at large interchain hopping ${t}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}>2t$ only, a Mott gap opens up for bosons as soon as ${t}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}\ensuremath{\ne}0$ through a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. Away from half filling, the situation is even more interesting since a gapless Luttinger liquid mode emerges in the symmetric sector with a nontrivial filling-dependent Luttinger parameter $1/2\ensuremath{\leqslant}{K}_{s}\ensuremath{\leqslant}1$. Consequences for experiments in cold atoms and spin ladders in a magnetic field, as well as disorder effects, are discussed. In particular, a quantum phase transition is expected at finite disorder strength between a one-dimensional superfluid and an insulating Bose glass phase.
We investigate the topological properties of hardcore bosons possessing nearest-neighbor repulsive interactions on a two-leg ladder. We show that by allowing nearest-neighbor dimerized interactions instead of hopping dimerization, the system exhibits topological phases and phase transitions under proper conditions. First, by assuming uniform hopping throughout the ladder, we show that when interaction along the legs are dimerized and the dimerization pattern is different in the legs, a trivial rung-Mott insulator to a topological bond order phase transition occurs as a function of the dimerization strength. However, for a fixed dimerization strength, the system exhibits a topological to trivial phase transition with increase in the rung hopping. A completely different scenario appears when the rung interaction is turned on. We obtain that for a ladder with uniform hopping, the repulsive interaction either turns the topological phase into a trivial rung-Mott insulator or a charge density wave phase. Such topological features are absent when the dimerization pattern in the nearest-neighbor interaction is considered to be identical in both the legs of the ladder. We numerically obtain the ground-state properties and also show the signatures of topological phase transitions through Thouless charge pumping.
