Abstract

The mutual information of measurement of a local operator between two spatial regions characterizes the reduction in the uncertainty of measurement outcomes in one region given the outcome in the other. We study the Rényi-Shannon mutual information of measurement in conformal field theories (CFTs). Explicit calculations for scalar primaries and descendants in large $N$ CFTs are performed in the two extreme limits of the intervals being adjacent or largely separated. The results depend on only the cross ratio and the scaling dimension $Δ$ of the operator being measured, with striking similarities to the mutual information of entanglement. We find a surprising quadratic dependence as $(Δ-1/2)^2$ for adjacent intervals. This dependence superficially seems to violate the information processing inequality, which we discuss and resolve. We also offer a holographic interpretation of the mutual information of measurement.

Some results on the mutual information of disjoint regions in higher dimensions

John Cardy

We consider the mutual Rényi information of disjoint compact spatial regions A and B in the ground state of a d + 1-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT), in the limit when the separation r between A and B is much greater than their sizes R A , B . We show that in general , where α is the smallest sum of the scaling dimensions of operators whose product has the quantum numbers of the vacuum, and the constants depend only on the shape of the regions and universal data of the CFT. For a free massless scalar field, where α = d − 1, we show that is proportional to the capacitance of a thin conducting slab in the shape of A in d + 1-dimensional electrostatics, and give explicit formulae for this when A is the interior of a sphere S d − 1 or an ellipsoid. For spherical regions in d = 2 and 3 we obtain explicit results for C ( n ) for all n and hence for the leading term in the mutual information by taking n → 1. We also compute a universal logarithmic correction to the area law for the Rényi entropies of a single spherical region for a scalar field theory with a small mass.

Mutual information after a local quench in conformal field theory

Curtis T. Asplund, Alice Bernamonti

We compute the entanglement entropy and mutual information for two disjoint intervals in two-dimensional conformal field theories as a function of time after a local quench, using the replica trick and boundary conformal field theory. We obtain explicit formulas for the universal contributions, which are leading in the regimes of, for example, close or well-separated intervals of fixed length. The results are largely consistent with the quasiparticle picture, in which entanglement above that present in the ground state is carried by pairs of entangled freely propagating excitations. We also calculate the mutual information for two disjoint intervals in a proposed holographic local quench, whose holographic energy-momentum tensor matches the conformal field theory one. We find that the holographic mutual information shows qualitative differences from the conformal field theory results and we discuss possible interpretations of this.

Note on non-vacuum conformal family contributions to Rényi entropy in two-dimensional CFT

Jiaju Zhang

We calculate the contributions of a general non-vacuum conformal family to Rényi entropy in two-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT). The primary operator of the conformal family can be either non-chiral or chiral, and we denote its scaling dimension by Δ . For the case of two short intervals on a complex plane, we expand the Rényi mutual information by the cross ratio x to order x 2 Δ +2 . For the case of one interval on a torus with low temperature, we expand the Rényi entropy by q =exp(−2π β /L), with β being the inverse temperature and L being the spatial period, to order q Δ +2 . To make the result meaningful, we require that the scaling dimension Δ cannot be too small. For two intervals on a complex plane we need Δ > 1, and for one interval on a torus we need Δ > 2. We work in the small Newton constant limit on the gravity side and so a large central charge limit on the CFT side, and find matches of gravity and CFT results.

Various Aspects of Holographic Entanglement Entropy and Mutual Information

Jarkko Järvelä

Entanglement entropy is a proposal to quantify quantum entanglement of two disjoint regions in a pure system. It is a relatively new topic and is developing rapidly. The current main motives to study it are its applications to studying quantum gravity, thermalization and phase transitions in condensed matter systems. Mutual information is a related quantity and it can be used to measure the amount of information two disjoint regions share. The purpose of this thesis is to give an introduction to the general results of the field without considering specific systems. The two prominent approaches used are two-dimensional conformal field theory and the holographic entanglement entropy conjecture. The first approach is to calculate entanglement entropy using conformal field theory, the results of which are known to be exact although technically more difficult to derive and only available for 1+1 dimensional systems. Both static and dynamic systems will be discussed. The results are reproduced and generalized to higher dimensions using holography. As a more recent topic, the holographic approach is used to rederive the entanglement entropy of systems with a Fermi surface using AdS/Vaidya metric with Lifshitz scaling and hyperscaling violation. The final chapter of the thesis discusses mutual information in various static and dynamic cases considered in the previous chapters. For the first time, the evolution of mutual information is calculated in AdS/Vaidya metric with Lifshitz scaling and hyperscaling violation in the critical theta=d-1 case.

Aspects of N-partite information in conformal field theories

César A. Agón, Pablo Bueno, Óscar Lasso Andino +1 more

Abstract We present several new results for the N-partite information, IN, of spatial regions in the ground state of d-dimensional conformal field theories. First, we show that IN can be written in terms of a single N-point function of twist operators. Using this, we argue that in the limit in which all mutual separations are much greater than the regions sizes, the N-partite information scales as IN ~ r−2N∆, where r is the typical distance between pairs of regions and ∆ is the lowest primary scaling dimension. In the case of spherical entangling surfaces, we obtain a completely explicit formula for the I4 in terms of 2-, 3- and 4-point functions of the lowest-dimensional primary. Then, we consider a three- dimensional scalar field in the lattice. We verify the predicted long-distance scaling and provide strong evidence that IN is always positive for general regions and arbitrary N for that theory. For the I4, we find excellent numerical agreement between our general formula and the lattice result for disk regions. We also perform lattice calculations of the mutual information for more general regions and general separations both for a free scalar and a free fermion, and conjecture that, normalized by the corresponding disk entanglement entropy coefficients, the scalar result is always greater than the fermion one. Finally, we verify explicitly the equality between the N-partite information of bulk and boundary fields in holographic theories for spherical entangling surfaces in general dimensions.

Rényi mutual information for a free scalar field in even dimensions

Bin Chen, Jiang Long

We compute the R\'enyi mutual information of two disjoint spheres in free massless scalar theory in even dimensions higher than 2. The spherical twist operator in a conformal field theory can be expanded into the sum of local primary operators and their descendants. We analyze the primary operators in the replicated scalar theory and find the ones of the fewest dimensions and spins. We study the one-point function of these operators in the conical geometry and obtain their expansion coefficients in the operator product expansion of spherical twist operators. We show that the R\'enyi mutual information can be expressed in terms of the conformal partial waves. We compute explicitly the R\'enyi mutual information up to order ${z}^{d}$, where $z$ is the cross ratio and $d$ is the spacetime dimension.
