Exact SU($N$) symmetry resolution of bosonic Hubbard models: general boson-fermion mappings and flat-band singlet-cluster states

Abstract

We show how to perform exact diagonalization of SU($N$)-symmetric Bose-Hubbard models separately in each irreducible representation of SU($N$), by exploiting the Howe duality between U($L$) and U($N$). Three structural consequences follow for any lattice and any Hamiltonian built from the U($L$) generators: (i) the spectrum in a given orbital sector is independent of $N$ and of the particle statistics, (ii) the canonical partition functions for bosons and fermions obey the exact identity $Z_{\mathrm{b}}(-N)=(-1)^{N_\mathrm{b}}Z_{\mathrm{f}}(N)$, (iii) with unfrustrated hopping the groundstate is always a color ferromagnet, so that the color-resolved method we introduce is useful to study excited sectors, frustrated lattices and finite temperatures. As applications, we first derive the finite-temperature phase diagram of attractive SU($N$) bosons on few-site rings at large $N$ for arbitrary filling. We then show the emergence of singlet-cluster states from frustrated hopping, the counterpart of fermionic ferromagnetism, with the example of the sawtooth and kagome lattice.

Exact Diagonalization of $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ Fermi-Hubbard Models

Thomas Botzung, Pierre Nataf

We show how to perform exact diagonalizations of $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ Fermi-Hubbard models on $L$-site clusters separately in each irreducible representation ({irrep}) of $\mathrm{SU}(N)$. Using the representation theory of the unitary group $\mathrm{U}(L)$, we demonstrate that a convenient orthonormal basis, on which matrix elements of the Hamiltonian are very simple, is given by the set of {\it semistandard Young tableaux} (or, equivalently the Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns) corresponding to the targeted irrep. As an application of this color factorization, we study the robustness of some $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ phases predicted in the Heisenberg limit upon decreasing the on-site interaction $U$ on various lattices of size $L \leq 12$ and for $2 \leq N \leq 6$. In particular, we show that a long-range color ordered phase emerges for intermediate $U$ for $N=4$ at filling $1/4$ on the triangular lattice.

Flat-band ferromagnetism in the SU(N) Hubbard and Kondo lattice models

Kensuke Tamura, Hosho Katsura

Abstract We develop a general theory of flat-band ferromagnetism in the SU(N) Fermi–Hubbard model, which describes the behavior of N-component fermions with SU(N) symmetric interactions. We focus on the case where the single-particle spectrum has a flat band at the bottom and establish a necessary and sufficient condition for the SU(N) Hubbard model to exhibit ferromagnetism when the number of particles is the same as the degeneracy. We show that the occurrence of ferromagnetism is equivalent to the irreducibility of the projection matrix onto the space of single-particle ground states. We also demonstrate that this result can be exploited to establish a rigorous result for the ferromagnetic SU(N) Kondo lattice model with a flat band. Specifically, we prove that when the SU(N) Hubbard model is ferromagnetic, the ferromagnetic SU(N) Kondo lattice model with the same hopping matrix also exhibits SU(N) ferromagnetism.

$\mathbb{Z}_L$ symmetry breaking in SU(N) Fermi-Hubbard dots at zero and finite temperature

Loïc Herviou, Elodie Campan, Pierre Nataf

We address the SU(N) Fermi-Hubbard model on a chain, with $N$ the number of degenerate orbitals, or colors, for each fermion. In the limit of both large number of colors $N$ and particles, and small number of sites $L \geq 2$, the model is proved to undergo a $\mathbb{Z}_L$ symmetry breaking for attractive local interaction amplitude $U$. Using a combination of Exact Diagonalization with full SU(N) symmetry, generalized L-levels Holstein-Primakoff transformation, Hartree-Fock method and large-N saddle point approximation of the partition function, we extend the results obtained in [PRA 111, L020201 (2025)] to $L \geq 3$ and finite temperature $T>0$. In particular, we show that at $T=0$ for $U

Exact diagonalization of Heisenberg SU(N) chains in the fully symmetric and antisymmetric representations

Pierre Nataf, Frédéric Mila

Motivated by recent experimental progress in the context of ultracold multicolor fermionic atoms in optical lattices, we have developed a method to exactly diagonalize the Heisenberg $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ Hamiltonian with several particles per site living in a fully symmetric or antisymmetric representation of $\mathrm{SU}(N)$. The method, based on the use of standard Young tableaux, takes advantage of the full $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ symmetry, allowing one to work directly in each irreducible representation of the global $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ group. Since the $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ singlet sector is often much smaller than the full Hilbert space, this enables one to reach much larger system sizes than with conventional exact diagonalizations. The method is applied to the study of Heisenberg chains in the symmetric representation with two and three particles per site up to $N=10$ and up to 20 sites. For the length scales accessible to this approach, all systems except the Haldane chain [$\mathrm{SU}(2)$ with two particles per site] appear to be gapless, and the central charge and scaling dimensions extracted from the results are consistent with a critical behavior in the $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ level $k$ Wess-Zumino-Witten universality class, where $k$ is the number of particles per site. These results point to the existence of a crossover between this universality class and the asymptotic low-energy behavior with a gapped spectrum or a critical behavior in the $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ level 1 WZW universality class.

Ferromagnetism in d-Dimensional SU(n) Hubbard Models with Nearly Flat Bands

Kensuke Tamura, Hosho Katsura

Abstract We present rigorous results for the SU(n) Fermi–Hubbard models with finite-range hopping in d ( $$\ge 2$$ ≥ 2 ) dimensions. The models are defined on a class of decorated lattices. We first study the models with flat bands at the bottom of the single-particle spectrum and prove that the ground states exhibit SU(n) ferromagnetism when the number of particles is equal to the number of unit cells. We then perturb the models by adding particular hopping terms and make the bottom bands dispersive. Under the same filling condition, it is proved that the ground states remain SU(n) ferromagnetic when the bottom bands are sufficiently flat and the Coulomb repulsion is sufficiently large.
