Search for free non-Abelian anyons in paired composite-fermion states

Abstract

The even-denominator fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states, understood as topological superconductors of composite fermions, are predicted to support elementary quasiparticles (QPs) or quasiholes (QHs) obeying non-Abelian braid statistics. Using the microscopic framework of parton theory, we investigate many experimentally observed paired composite-fermion states and find that their elementary QPs and QHs in general bind to form Abelian molecules, thus obscuring non-Abelian braid statistics. An exception is the $ν=1/2$ state in wide quantum wells, where our calculations show free QPs or QHs; we thus identify this state as an especially promising candidate for realizing and studying non-Abelian braid statistics. We also indicate how the study of such bound states can help reveal the topological structure of the state.

Non-Abelian fusion and braiding in many-body parton states

Koyena Bose

Fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states host fractionally charged anyons with exotic exchange statistics. Of particular interest are FQH phases supporting non-Abelian anyons, which can encode topologically protected quantum information. In this work, we construct quasihole bases for a broad family of non-Abelian FQH states using parton wave functions, which reproduces the fusion-space dimensionality expected from their underlying conformal field theory, consistent with level-rank duality across the parton family. As an application, we numerically compute braiding matrices for representative parton states for large systems, providing a general framework for diagnosing non-Abelian characteristics in candidate FQH states.

Numerical demonstration of Abelian fractional statistics of composite fermion excitations in the spherical geometry

Koyena Bose, Ajit Coimbatore Balram

Fractional quantum Hall (FQH) fluids host quasiparticle excitations that carry a fraction of the electronic charge. Moreover, in contrast to bosons and fermions that carry exchange statistics of 0 and $\ensuremath{\pi}$ respectively, these quasiparticles of FQH fluids, when braided around one another, can accumulate a Berry phase, which is a fractional multiple of $\ensuremath{\pi}$. Deploying the spherical geometry, we numerically demonstrate that composite fermion particle (CFP) excitations in the Jain FQH states carry Abelian fractional statistics. Previously, the exchange statistics of CFPs were studied in the disk geometry, where the statistics get obscured due to a shift in the phase arising from the addition of another CFP, making its determination cumbersome without prior knowledge of the shift. We show that on the sphere this technical issue can be circumvented and the statistics of CFPs can be obtained more transparently. The ideas we present can be extended to determine the statistics of quasiparticles arising in certain non-Abelian partonic FQH states.

Exactly solvable Hamiltonian for non-Abelian quasiparticles

Koji Kudo, Anirban Sharma, G. J. Sreejith +1 more

Particles obeying non-Abelian braid statistics have been predicted to emerge in the fractional quantum Hall effect. In particular, a model Hamiltonian with short-range three-body interaction (${\stackrel{\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}{V}}_{3}^{\text{Pf}}$) between electrons confined to the lowest Landau level provides exact solutions for quasiholes, and thereby allows a proof of principle for the existence of quasiholes obeying non-Abelian braid statistics. We construct, in terms of two- and three-body Haldane pseudopotentials, a model Hamiltonian that can be solved exactly for both quasiholes and quasiparticles, and provide evidence of non-Abelian statistics for the latter as well. The structure of the quasiparticle states of this model is in agreement with that predicted by the bipartite composite-fermion model of quasiparticles. We further demonstrate, for systems for which exact diagonalization is possible, adiabatic continuity for the ground state, the ordinary neutral excitation, and the topological exciton as we deform our model Hamiltonian continuously into the lowest Landau-level ${\stackrel{\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}{V}}_{3}^{\text{Pf}}$ Hamiltonian.

Observation of Time-Domain Braiding of Non-Abelian Anyons at $ν= 5/2$ State

Tomer Alkalay, Jinhong Park, Minseong Oh +7 more

Unlike elementary particles, which obey either bosonic or fermionic exchange statistics, certain quasiparticles, known as anyons, are predicted to exhibit Abelian or non-Abelian braiding statistics. While braiding Abelian anyons modifies the wavefunction by a 'statistical phase', braiding non-Abelian anyons implements a unitary transformation of the state within a degenerate subspace of states. Experimental evidence of non-Abelian braiding has thus far remained elusive. Here, we report a 'time-domain braiding' signature of non-Abelian anyons in the $ν= 5/2$ fractional quantum Hall state, by extending our previously demonstrated approach with Abelian anyons at $ν= 1/3$. Our approach is based on measurements of the current fluctuations arising from weak partitioning of a highly dilute one-dimensional edge mode. We independently probe the partition noise of the downstream charged mode and also that of the upstream neutral mode. These independent measurements agree with our theoretical predictions for 'time-domain braiding' of the downstream Abelian and the upstream non-Abelian anyons, respectively, in the 'particle-hole Pfaffian' topological order. Together, these results provide evidence for the presence of non-Abelian anyons.

Universal topological quantum computation from a superconductor/Abelian quantum Hall heterostructure

Roger S. K. Mong, Clarke, David J., Jason Alicea +8 more

Non-Abelian anyons promise to reveal spectacular features of quantum mechanics that could ultimately provide the foundation for a decoherence-free quantum computer. A key breakthrough in the pursuit of these exotic particles originated from Read and Green's observation that the Moore-Read quantum Hall state and a (relatively simple) two-dimensional p+ip superconductor both support so-called Ising non-Abelian anyons. Here we establish a similar correspondence between the Z_3 Read-Rezayi quantum Hall state and a novel two-dimensional superconductor in which charge-2e Cooper pairs are built from fractionalized quasiparticles. In particular, both phases harbor Fibonacci anyons that---unlike Ising anyons---allow for universal topological quantum computation solely through braiding. Using a variant of Teo and Kane's construction of non-Abelian phases from weakly coupled chains, we provide a blueprint for such a superconductor using Abelian quantum Hall states interlaced with an array of superconducting islands. Fibonacci anyons appear as neutral deconfined particles that lead to a two-fold ground-state degeneracy on a torus. In contrast to a p+ip superconductor, vortices do not yield additional particle types yet depending on non-universal energetics can serve as a trap for Fibonacci anyons. These results imply that one can, in principle, combine well-understood and widely available phases of matter to realize non-Abelian anyons with universal braid statistics. Numerous future directions are discussed, including speculations on alternative realizations with fewer experimental requirements.

Composite Fermion Pairing Induced by Landau Level Mixing

Tongzhou Zhao, Ajit Coimbatore Balram, Jainendra K. Jain

Pairing of composite fermions provides a possible mechanism for fractional quantum Hall effect at even denominator fractions and is believed to serve as a platform for realizing quasiparticles with non-Abelian braiding statistics. We present results from fixed-phase diffusion Monte Carlo calculations which predict that substantial Landau level mixing can induce a pairing of composite fermions at filling factors ν=1/2 and ν=1/4 in the l=-3 relative angular momentum channel, thereby destabilizing the composite-fermion Fermi seas to produce non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall states.
