Abstract

The main result of the paper states that if $0\neq v\in\mathbb C^m\otimes\mathbb C^n$, $d=\min\{m,n\}$, and $p=SR(v)$, then for every $1\le q\le d$, \begin{equation*} \min\left\{OSR(\mathbf U): \begin{array}{l} \mathbf U\in\mathbb M_m\otimes\mathbb M_n\text{ is unitary}, SR(\mathbf Uv)=q \end{array}\right\} = \left\lceil\max\left\{\frac pq,\frac qp\right\}\right\rceil . \end{equation*} Here $OSR(\mathbf U)$ denotes the operator Schmidt rank of $\mathbf U$. Furthermore, if $\mathbf U\in\mathbb M_m\otimes\mathbb M_n$ is unitary and $OSR(\mathbf U)\le k$, then, for every unit vector $x\in\mathbb C^m\otimes\mathbb C^n$ and every $1\le r\le d$, \begin{equation*} F_{\min\{kr,d\}}(\mathbf Ux)\ge F_r(x) \quad\text{and}\quad F_{\min\{kr,d\}}(x)\ge F_r(\mathbf Ux), \end{equation*} where $F_r(x)$ denotes the sum of the $r$ largest squared Schmidt coefficients of $x$. This result is stronger than rank reachability as it controls the entire cumulative Schmidt profile. We also establish a majorization relation and use it to obtain sharp bounds on Schatten-norm distortion and on the change of Rényi entropies under unitaries with bounded operator Schmidt rank.

Estimation of low rank density matrices: Bounds in Schatten norms and other distances

Dong Xia, Vladimir I. Koltchinskii

Let $\mathcal{S}_{m}$ be the set of all $m\times m$ density matrices (Hermitian positively semi-definite matrices of unit trace). Consider a problem of estimation of an unknown density matrix $\rho\in\mathcal{S}_{m}$ based on outcomes of $n$ measurements of observables $X_{1},\dots,X_{n}\in\mathbb{H}_{m}$ ($\mathbb{H}_{m}$ being the space of $m\times m$ Hermitian matrices) for a quantum system identically prepared $n$ times in state $\rho.$ Outcomes $Y_{1},\dots,Y_{n}$ of such measurements could be described by a trace regression model in which $\mathbb{E}_{\rho}(Y_{j}|X_{j})={\rm tr}(\rho X_{j}),j=1,\dots,n.$ The design variables $X_{1},\dots,X_{n}$ are often sampled at random from the uniform distribution in an orthonormal basis $\{E_{1},\dots,E_{m^{2}}\}$ of $\mathbb{H}_{m}$ (such as Pauli basis). The goal is to estimate the unknown density matrix $\rho$ based on the data $(X_{1},Y_{1}),\dots,(X_{n},Y_{n}).$ Let \[\hat{Z}:=\frac{m^{2}}{n}\sum_{j=1}^{n}Y_{j}X_{j}\] and let $\check{\rho}$ be the projection of $\hat{Z}$ onto the convex set $\mathcal{S}_{m}$ of density matrices. It is shown that for estimator $\check{\rho}$ the minimax lower bounds in classes of low rank density matrices (established earlier) are attained up logarithmic factors for all Schatten $p$-norm distances, $p\in[1,\infty]$ and for Bures version of quantum Hellinger distance. Moreover, for a slightly modified version of estimator $\check{\rho}$ the same property holds also for quantum relative entropy (Kullback-Leibler) distance between density matrices.

Sharp Continuity of Petz and Sandwiched Rényi Conditional Entropies

Hao-Chung Cheng, Po-Chieh Liu

We determine the sharp modulus of continuity, in trace distance, of the optimized Petz and sandwiched Rényi conditional entropies for every order $α\in[\frac12,1)$. If two bipartite states are within trace distance $δ$, then both conditional entropies differ by at most $\frac{1}{1-α} \log[(1-\varepsilon)^α +(D-1)^{1-α}\varepsilon^α]$, where $\varepsilon := \min\{δ,1-1/D\}$ and $D$ is the effective dimension, given by the dimension of the first subsystem times the largest possible Schmidt rank. For every distance constraint $δ\in[0,1]$, the bound is attained by an isotropic pair with a maximally entangled anchor. Taking $α\uparrow1$ recovers the recent sharp continuity bound of quantum conditional entropy by Berta et al. [arXiv:2607.24687]. The proof linearizes the relevant concave Rényi functional at a comparison point dictated by the isotropic equality family. Schmidt-rank domination extends the equality geometry to an arbitrary anchor state, after which trace-distance duality and a noncommutative calibration estimate control the perturbation and anchor term without weakening the sharp constant. The latter estimate requires matrix analysis and is assisted by ChatGPT 5.6 Sol.

A threshold for maximal Schmidt number from spectrum

Junhyeong An, Soojoon Lee

The Schmidt number quantifies the dimensionality of entanglement in bipartite quantum states. We investigate when the spectrum of a state on $\mathbb{C}^d \otimes \mathbb{C}^d$ alone guarantees that its Schmidt number is not maximal. By deriving spectral bounds for $(d-1)$-block positive operators, we prove that $\mathrm{LS}_p\subseteq \mathrm{ASN}_{d-1}$ for $p\leq \lfloor d^2/2\rfloor$, where $\mathrm{LS}_p$ denotes the set of states whose largest eigenvalue does not exceed the sum of their $p$ smallest eigenvalues, and $\mathrm{ASN}_{d-1}$ denotes the set of states whose Schmidt number remains at most $d-1$ under all global unitaries. This also yields a simple sufficient condition involving only the largest eigenvalue. As an application, we show that states satisfying the reduction criterion under arbitrary global unitaries belong to $\mathrm{ASN}_{d-1}$ in every dimension. This subsumes the earlier result that absolutely positive partial transpose states belong to $\mathrm{ASN}_{d-1}$. The global unitary requirement is nevertheless essential: for every $d\geq3$, we construct states of maximal Schmidt number satisfying the reduction criterion on both subsystems.

Estimation of low rank density matrices by Pauli measurements

Dong Xia

Density matrices are positively semi-definite Hermitian matrices with unit trace that describe the states of quantum systems. Many quantum systems of physical interest can be represented as high-dimensional low rank density matrices. A popular problem in quantum state tomography (QST) is to estimate the unknown low rank density matrix of a quantum system by conducting Pauli measurements. Our main contribution is twofold. First, we establish the minimax lower bounds in Schatten $p$-norms with $1\leq p\leq+\infty$ for low rank density matrices estimation by Pauli measurements. In our previous paper [14], these minimax lower bounds are proved under the trace regression model with Gaussian noise and the noise is assumed to have common variance. In this paper, we prove these bounds under the Binomial observation model which meets the actual model in QST. Second, we study the Dantzig estimator (DE) for estimating the unknown low rank density matrix under the Binomial observation model by using Pauli measurements. In our previous papers [14] and [25], we studied the least squares estimator and the projection estimator, where we proved the optimal convergence rates for the least squares estimator in Schatten $p$-norms with $1\leq p\leq2$ and, under a stronger condition, the optimal convergence rates for the projection estimator in Schatten $p$-norms with $1\leq p\leq+\infty$. In this paper, we show that the results of these two distinct estimators can be simultaneously obtained by the Dantzig estimator. Moreover, better convergence rates in Schatten norm distances can be proved for Dantzig estimator under conditions weaker than those needed in [14] and [25]. When the objective function of DE is replaced by the negative von Neumann entropy, we obtain sharp convergence rate in Kullback-Leibler divergence.
