Abstract

A local measurement of a critical many-body state produces exponentially many microscopic outcomes, each defining a different conditioned quantum state. We ask how much information from one such outcome is actually needed to predict the entanglement that remains between two unmeasured regions. We show that, in critical quantum chains, the universal outcome-resolved Rényi entropy is asymptotically determined by a single compact conformal coordinate extracted directly from the measurement record. Compact-boson theory explains this compression: the universal entropy is insensitive to all spatially varying components of the boundary profile, retaining only a single relative compact zero mode. At the free-fermion XX point, exact lattice identities expose the microscopic structure underlying the decoder, while large-scale outcome-by-outcome calculations confirm its scaling prediction across different subsystem geometries and Rényi indices. Numerical calculations in interacting XXZ chains further show that the same microscopic coordinate continues to decode the conditional entropy without interaction-dependent retuning. Thus an exponentially large space of measurement outcomes is reduced, for this universal observable, to a single conformal degree of freedom, revealing an emergent Luttinger-liquid mechanism for outcome-resolved postmeasurement entanglement.

Entanglement of excited states after measurements in conformal field theory

Hui-Huang Chen

We study the entanglement of low-energy excited states after a fixed-outcome projective measurement on a spatial interval in a (1+1)-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT). We restrict to post-selected measurement outcomes whose induced boundary condition flows in the infrared to a conformal boundary condition. Such an outcome is represented by a slit carrying that boundary condition, while excited states are introduced by operator insertions in the Euclidean path integral. After mapping the replicated slit geometry to a disk, the excited-state contribution to the post-measurement Rényi entropy is expressed as a normalized boundary-CFT correlation function. We apply this framework to the compact free boson CFT. For the chiral current excitation, the relevant ratios are given by current hafnians. We also study coherent superpositions of $J$ and $\bar J$, and of conjugate compact vertex operators. In the conjugate-vertex case, the ordinary-cylinder second Rényi ratio is independent of the relative phase, whereas the finite-slit post-measurement ratio contains phase-sensitive interference terms. Finally, we describe free-fermion and multi-Slater determinant methods for testing these predictions in the critical XX chain.

Universal Statistics of Measurement-Induced Entanglement in Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids

Kabir Khanna, Romain Vasseur

We study the statistics of measurement-induced entanglement (MIE) after partial measurement on a class of one-dimensional quantum critical states described by Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids at low energies. Using a replica trick to average over measurement outcomes in the charge basis and tools from conformal field theory (CFT), we derive closed-form expressions for the cumulants of MIE. We show that exact Born-averaging over microscopic measurement outcomes becomes equivalent at low energy to averaging over conformal boundary conditions weighted by their corresponding partition functions. Our results yield distinctive critical behavior across all cumulants in the regime where the unmeasured parts of the system are maximally separated. We also obtain the full distribution of MIE, finding that it is generically bimodal and exhibits fat-tails. We corroborate our analytical predictions by numerical calculations and find good agreement between them.

Measurement-Induced Entanglement in Conformal Field Theory

Kabir Khanna, Romain Vasseur

Local measurements can radically reshape patterns of many-body entanglement, especially in long-range entangled quantum-critical states. Yet, analytical results addressing the effects of measurements on many-body states remain scarce, and measurements are often approximated as forcing specific measurement outcomes. We study measurement-induced entanglement (MIE) in Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids, a broad family of 1+1D quantum critical states described at low energies by compact free boson conformal field theories. Using a replica trick to address the randomness of the measurement outcomes, we compute exactly the entanglement induced by measuring the local charge operator for Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids, in very good agreement with matrix-product state calculations. We show that the MIE for physical quantum measurements is fundamentally different from the entanglement induced by forcing measurement outcomes, and has a natural interpretation in terms of Born averaging over conformally invariant boundary conditions.

Quantum Snapshots Reveal a Compact Conformal Boundary Mode

M. A. Rajabpour

A projective measurement of a many-body state produces a microscopic snapshot, usually viewed as random classical data. We show that partial occupation snapshots of the critical XX chain contain a universal angle with a precise conformal meaning. Dividing the ring into two measured and two unmeasured arcs, we assign geometry-dependent conformal side weights to the observed occupations and obtain a compact variable $δ_L$. At every finite size, $δ_L$ is fixed by the measured sites alone; the particular complete-configuration lift $X_L$ used in the proof additionally depends on unobserved particles. This angle is an exact microscopic compact coordinate whose scaling-limit law is that of the relative Dirichlet phase of the associated conformal quadrilateral---the boundary coordinate conjugate to charge in continuum post-measurement descriptions. Exact free-fermion determinants yield all of its Fourier moments. We prove that the lift becomes Gaussian with variance $2h(ζ)$, where $h(ζ)$ is the rectangle modulus, and hence $\langle e^{\ii qδ_L}\rangle\to e^{-h(ζ)q^2}$. Thus raw quantum snapshots realize the heat kernel on a circle and provide an outcome-level microscopic foundation for the compact zero-mode sector of Born averages over fluctuating conformal boundary conditions.

Phase transition in the Rényi-Shannon entropy of Luttinger liquids

Jean-Marie Stéphan, Grégoire Misguich, Vincent Pasquier

The R\'enyi-Shannon entropy allows extraction of some universal information about many-body wave functions. For a critical spin chain with central charge $c=1$, we show that it exhibits a phase transition at some value ${n}_{c}$ of the R\'enyi parameter $n$ which depends on the Luttinger parameter $R$. A replica-free formulation establishes a connection to boundary entropies in conformal field theory and reveals that the transition is triggered by a vertex operator which becomes relevant at the boundary. Our numerical results (XXZ and ${J}_{1}\ensuremath{-}{J}_{2}$ spin chains) match the continuum limit prediction, confirming its universal character. The replica approach used in previous works turns out to be correct only for $n<{n}_{c}$. From the point of view of two-dimensional Rokhsar-Kivelson states, this transition reveals a singularity in the entanglement spectra.

Symmetry-Resolved Entanglement Entropy in Critical Free-Fermion Chains

Nick G. Jones

Abstract The symmetry-resolved Rényi entanglement entropy is the Rényi entanglement entropy of each symmetry sector of a density matrix $$\rho $$ ρ . This experimentally relevant quantity is known to have rich theoretical connections to conformal field theory (CFT). For a family of critical free-fermion chains, we present a rigorous lattice-based derivation of its scaling properties using the theory of Toeplitz determinants. We consider a class of critical quantum chains with a microscopic U(1) symmetry; each chain has a low energy description given byNmassless Dirac fermions. For the density matrix, $$\rho _A$$ ρA , of subsystems ofLneighbouring sites we calculate the leading terms in the largeLasymptotic expansion of the symmetry-resolved Rényi entanglement entropies. This follows from a largeLexpansion of the charged moments of $$\rho _A$$ ρA ; we derive $$\mathrm {tr}(\mathrm {e}^{\mathrm {i}\alpha Q_A} \rho _A^n)~=~a \mathrm {e}^{\mathrm {i}\alpha \langle Q_A\rangle } (\sigma L)^{-x}(1+O(L^{-\mu }))$$ tr(eiαQAρAn)=aeiα⟨QA⟩(σL)-x(1+O(L-μ)) , wherea, xand $$\mu $$ μ are universal and $$\sigma $$ σ depends only on theNFermi momenta. We show that the exponentxcorresponds to the expectation from CFT analysis. The error term $$O(L^{-\mu })$$ O(L-μ) is consistent with but weaker than the field theory prediction $$O(L^{-2\mu })$$ O(L-2μ) . However, using further results and conjectures for the relevant Toeplitz determinant, we find excellent agreement with the expansion over CFT operators.
