Abstract

A series of 11.6-d-duration photon-counting experiments, employing a broad variety of light sources with different statistical properties and optical spectra, were carried out over a 1.5-yr period. All of the photon-count spectra at baseband followed a common $1/f^2$ form over the frequency range $1 \times 10^{-6} \leqslant f \leqslant 5 \times 10^{-4}$ Hz, corresponding to a timescale range $33$ min $ \leqslant T_f \leqslant 11.6$ d, where $T_f \equiv 1/f$. The lower and upper timescale limits were established by the photodetector noise floor and the duration of the individual experiments, respectively. Unlike ordinary Brownian motion, all of the measured photon-count sample paths exhibited irregular long-timescale fluctuations, with durations ranging from hours to days. It has been established that the photon-count spectra cannot plausibly be ascribed to fluctuations of the current, voltage, or temperature of the source or the detector, nor to technical sources of noise associated with the optical system or local environment. Although the physical origin of the photon-count fluctuations remains unresolved, several heterodox hypotheses are set forth. From a statistical point-of-view, the photon counts appear to follow a doubly stochastic Poisson process with a slowly varying random intensity. Analogous experiments that rely on ionizing radiation and direct-conversion solid-state radiation detectors are proposed.

Photon-count fluctuations exhibit inverse-square baseband spectral behavior that extends to <1μHz

Nishant Mohan, Steven Bradley Lowen, Malvin Carl Teich

The authors demonstrate that a broad variety of light sources with markedly different optical spectra all exhibit slow photon-count fluctuations at baseband that display inverse-square spectral behavior at frequencies that extend to 1 $\ensuremath{\mu}$Hz. These fluctuations are unexpected and may appear in experimental schemes from optical coherence tomography to gravitational-wave detection

Distinguishing photon-count fluctuation characteristics of classical and quantum light sources using non-Markovian processes

Lian Seng Tey, Sithi Vinayakam Muniandy, Wu Yi Chong

Understanding photon-count dynamics is crucial for applications such as quantum random number generators and quantum key distributions, where random and memoryless photon-count arrival processes are essential for performance and security. We investigated the fluctuation dynamics of aggregated photon-count time series for two distinct light sources: a 780-nm laser diode and a spontaneous parametric down-conversion source, using detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) and the index of dispersion for intervals (IDI). Despite the degradation of photon statistics to Poissonian due to optical losses and detector inefficiencies, our analysis reveals significant long-range dependence at large timescales. The DFA scaling exponents α[over ¯]>0.75 and IDI values c_{k}^{2}>1 at high mean photon count and large aggregation timescales indicate photon-count fluctuations deviated from Poisson model. Our findings underscore the necessity of models beyond Poisson statistics to accurately describe the photon-count dynamics over extended timescales.

Photocounting distributions for exponentially decaying sources

Malvin Carl Teich, HOWARD C. CARD

Exact photocounting distributions are obtained for a pulse of light whose intensity is exponentially decaying in time, when the underlying photon statistics are Poisson. It is assumed that the starting time for the sampling interval (which is of arbitrary duration) is uniformly distributed. The probability of registering n counts in the fixed time T is given in terms of the incomplete gamma function for n >/= 1 and in terms of the exponential integral for n = 0. Simple closed-form expressions are obtained for the count mean and variance. The results are expected to be of interest in certain studies involving spontaneous emission, radiation damage in solids, and nuclear counting. They will also be useful in neurobiology and psychophysics, since habituation and sensitization processes may sometimes be characterized by the same stochastic model.

Influence of light source and detector’s imperfections on the photon counting statistics

Aleksei Reutov, Сыч Денис Васильевич

Abstract Photon counting provides a valuable tool for measuring quantum properties of light. Unavoidable imperfections of photon detectors lead to discrepancies between the statistics of photons and statistics of photon counts. Here we consider dead-time corrections and influence of intensity fluctuations for simulated Poissonian statistics of photo counts for the pulsed or continuous wave coherent light sources. We analyse dependence between the statistical moments of corrected distribution and the mean photon number, dead-time, and level of intensity fluctuations.

Fluctuation properties of multiplied-Poisson light: Measurement of the photon-counting distribution for radioluminescence radiation from glass

Malvin Carl Teich, Bahaa E. A. Saleh

We investigate the photon statistics of light whose intensity fluctuations are due to shot noise, such as occurs in certain kinds of luminescence involving multiplied-Poisson processes. The degrees of freedom and degeneracy parameters are obtained and contrasted with those for thermal light. The excess count variance for shot-noise light exhibits particle-like fluctuations and is maximized for large counting times. Radioluminescence photons produced in glass obey the Neyman type-$A$ counting distribution predicted by the theory.
