We provide an upper bound on the maximal entropy rate at which the entropy of the expected density operator of a given ensemble of two states changes under nonlocal unitary evolution. A large class of entropy measures in considered, which includes Rényi and Tsallis entropies. The result is derived from a general bound on the trace-norm of a commutator, which can be expected to find other implementations. We apply this result to bound the maximal rate at which quantum dynamics can generate entanglement in a bipartite closed system with Rényi and Tsallis entanglement entropies taken as measures of entanglement in the system.
We present two results derived from the sharp log-Sobolev inequality for the uniform measure on a complete graph which concern the von Neumann entropy and the Entanglement of Formation of a state of finite and infinite-dimensional quantum systems.
The first result is a sharp Lipschitz lower semicontinuity bound for the von Neumann entropy at any mixed state
ρ with uniform positive spectrum (i.e. a state proportional to a projector) w.r.t. the fidelity deficit: the inequality
S(ρ)−S(σ)≤Cρ(1−F(ρ,σ)) valid for any state
σ, where
Cρ is a constant depending on the rank of
ρ.
The second result is a sharp Lipschitz lower semicontinuity bound for the Entanglement of Formation at any pure state
ρ with uniform positive spectrum of marginal states w.r.t. the fidelity deficit: the inequality
EF(ρ)−EF(σ)≤Cρ(1−Trρσ) valid for any state
σ, where
Cρ is a constant depending on the Schmidt rank of
ρ.
In both cases the optimal constant
Cρ is equal to the optimal constant
Kd in the log-Sobolev inequality for the complete graph with
d vertices: in the first case
d=rankρ, in the second one
d=rankρA=rankρB.

We prove the sharp uniform continuity bound for quantum conditional entropy. If two bipartite states are at trace distance at most
δ and
d=dimA, the optimal dimension-only modulus of continuity is
h2(δ)+δlog(d2−1) up to
δ=1−d−2 and
2logd thereafter, where
h2 denotes the binary entropy. When
dimB≥d, this bound is tight for every
δ∈[0,1]. The key proof idea was developed with the assistance of ChatGPT 5.6 Sol, building on and adapting the tight classical proof of Alhejji \& Smith [IEEE ISIT (2020)], which follows a conceptually different approach.
We investigate the computational hardness of estimating the quantum
α-Rényi entropy
SαR(ρ)=1−αlnTr(ρα) and the quantum
q-Tsallis entropy
SqT(ρ)=q−11−Tr(ρq), both of which converge to the von Neumann entropy as the order approaches
1. The promise problems Quantum
α-Rényi Entropy Approximation (RényiQEA
α) and Quantum
q-Tsallis Entropy Approximation (TsallisQEA
q) ask whether $ {\rm S}^ {\tt R}_α(ρ)$ or
SqT(ρ), is at least
τ1 or at most
τ2, where
τ1−τ2 is typically a positive constant. Previous hardness results cover only the von Neumann entropy (order
1) and some cases of the quantum
q-Tsallis entropy, while existing approaches do not readily extend to other orders.
We establish that for all positive real
α and
q, and also for
α=∞, the rank-
2 variants Rank2RényiQEA
α and Rank2TsallisQEA
q are BQP-hard. Combined with prior (rank-dependent) quantum query algorithms in Wang, Guan, Liu, Zhang, and Ying (TIT 2024), Wang, Zhang, and Li (TIT 2024), and Liu and Wang (SODA 2025), as well as the one derived from O'Donnell and Wright (STOC 2016), our results imply:
- For all real orders
α>0 or
α=∞, and for all real orders
0<q≤1, LowRankRényiQEA
α and LowRankTsallisQEA
q are BQP-complete, where both are restricted versions of RényiQEA
α and TsallisQEA
q with
ρ of polynomial rank.
- For all real order
q>1, TsallisQEA
q is BQP-complete.
Our hardness results stem from reductions based on new inequalities relating the
α-Rényi or
q-Tsallis binary entropies of different orders. These reductions differ substantially from previous approaches, and the inequalities are of independent interest.
We propose a generalization of the quantum entropy introduced by Wigner and von Neumann [Z. Phys. 57, 30 (1929)10.1007/BF01339852]. Our generalization is applicable to both quantum pure states and mixed states. When the dimension N of the Hilbert space is large, this generalized Wigner-von Neumann (GWvN) entropy becomes independent of the choices of basis and is asymptotically equal to lnN in the sense of typicality. The dynamic evolution of our entropy is also typical, and is reminiscent of quantum H theorem proved by von Neumann. For a composite system, the GWvN entropy is typically additive; for the microcanonical ensemble, it is equivalent to the Boltzmann entropy; and for a system entangled with environment, it is consistent with the familiar von Neumann entropy, which is zero for pure states. In addition, the GWvN entropy can be used to derive the Gibbs ensemble.
Quantum coherence is an important physical resource in quantum information science, and also as one of the most fundamental and striking features in quantum physics. In this paper, we obtain a symmetry-like relation of relative entropy measure
Cr(ρ) of coherence for
n-partite quantum states
ρ, which gives lower and upper bounds for
Cr(ρ). Meanwhile, we discuss the conjecture about the validity of the inequality
Cr(ρ)≤Cℓ1(ρ) for any state
ρ. We observe that every mixture
η of a state
ρ satisfying
Cr(ρ)≤Cℓ1(ρ) and any incoherent state
σ also satisfies the conjecture. We also note that if the von Neumann entropy is defined by the natural logarithm
ln instead of
log2, then the reduced relative entropy measure of coherence
Cˉr(ρ)=−ρdiaglnρdiag+ρlnρ satisfies the inequality
Cˉr(ρ)≤Cℓ1(ρ) for any mixed state
ρ.
