Abstract

The quantum breakdown model is a model of randomly interacting fermions, motivated by the physics of dielectric breakdown. Here, we establish classification of symmetry and quantum chaos in a zero-dimensional, all-to-all-interacting version of the quantum breakdown model. It exhibits the $\mathbb{Z}_4$ periodicity with respect to the number of fermionic modes, reminiscent of the symmetry classification of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model. A unique feature of the quantum breakdown model is that it realizes all the five classes with chiral symmetry and hosts an exponentially large number of many-body zero modes protected by the chiral index. We elucidate the separation and scaling of the spectral gap and demonstrate the symmetry-enriched hard-edge spectral statistics as signatures of quantum chaos in the chiral symmetry classes.

Symmetry of Open Quantum Systems: Classification of Dissipative Quantum Chaos

We develop a theory of symmetry in open quantum systems.Using the operator-state mapping, we characterize symmetry of Liouvillian superoperators for the open quantum dynamics by symmetry of operators in the double Hilbert space and apply the 38-fold internal-symmetry classification of non-Hermitian operators. We find rich symmetry classification due to the interplay between symmetry in the corresponding closed quantum systems and symmetry inherent in the construction of the Liouvillian superoperators. As an illustrative example of open quantum bosonic systems, we study symmetry classes of dissipative quantum spin models. For open quantum fermionic systems, we develop the Z 4 classification of fermion parity symmetry and antiunitary symmetry in the double Hilbert space, which contrasts with the Z 8 classification in closed quantum systems. We also develop the symmetry classification of open quantum fermionic many-body systems-a dissipative generalization of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model described by the Lindblad master equation. We establish the periodic tables of the SYK Lindbladians and elucidate the difference from the SYK Hamiltonians.Furthermore, from extensive numerical calculations, we study its complex-spectral statistics and demonstrate dissipative quantum chaos enriched by symmetry.

Classification of the quantum chaos in colored Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev models

Fadi Sun, Yu Yi-Xiang, Jinwu Ye +1 more

The random matrix theory (RMT) can be used to classify both topological phases of matter and quantum chaos. We develop a systematic and transformative RMT to classify the quantum chaos in the colored Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model first introduced by Gross and Rosenhaus. Here we focus on the two-colored case and the four-colored case with a balanced number of Majorana fermions $N$. By identifying the maximal symmetries, the independent parity conservation sectors, the minimum (irreducible) Hilbert space, and especially the relevant antiunitary and unitary operators, we show that the color degrees of freedom lead to novel quantum chaotic behaviors. When $N$ is odd, different symmetry operators need to be constructed to make the classifications complete. The two-colored case only shows the threefold Wigner-Dyson way, and the four-colored case shows the tenfold generalized Wigner-Dyson way which may also have nontrivial edge exponents. We also study two- and four-colored hybrid SYK models, which display many salient quantum chaotic features hidden in the corresponding pure SYK models. These features motivate us to develop a systematic RMT to study the energy level statistics of two or four uncorrelated random matrix ensembles. The exact diagonalizations are performed to study both the bulk energy level statistics and the edge exponents and to find excellent agreement with our exact maximal symmetry classifications. Our complete and systematic methods can be easily extended to study the generic imbalanced cases. They may be transferred to the classifications of colored tensor models, quantum chromodynamics with pairings across different colors, quantum black holes, and interacting symmetry protected (or enriched) topological phases.

Symmetry classification of typical quantum entanglement

Yuhan Liu, Jonah Kudler-Flam, Kohei Kawabata

Entanglement entropy of typical quantum states, also known as the Page curve, plays an important role in quantum many-body systems and quantum gravity. However, little has hitherto been understood about the role of symmetry in quantum entanglement. Here, we establish the comprehensive classification of typical quantum entanglement for free fermions, or equivalently the quadratic Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model with symmetry, on the basis of the tenfold fundamental symmetry classes of time reversal, charge conjugation, and chiral transformation. Through both analytical and numerical calculations of random matrix theory, we show that the volume-law contribution to average entanglement entropy is robust and remains unaffected by symmetry. Conversely, we uncover that the constant terms of the average and variance of entanglement entropy yield tenfold universal values unique to each symmetry class. These constant terms originate from the combination of a global scaling of the entanglement spectrum due to time-reversal symmetry and a singular peak at the center of the entanglement spectrum due to chiral or particle-hole symmetry. Our work elucidates the interplay of symmetry and entanglement in quantum physics and provides a characterization of symmetry-enriched quantum chaos.

Q -Laguerre spectral density and quantum chaos in the Wishart-Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model

Lucas Sá, Antonio M. Garcı́a-Garcı́a

We study the Wishart-Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (WSYK) model consisting of two $\stackrel{^}{q}$-body Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) models with general complex couplings, one the Hermitian conjugate of the other, living in off-diagonal blocks of a larger WSYK Hamiltonian. The spectrum is positive with a hard edge at zero energy. We employ diagrammatic and combinatorial techniques to compute analytically the low-order moments of the Hamiltonian. In the limit of large number $N$ of Majoranas, we have found striking similarities with the moments of the weight function of the Al-Salam-Chihara $Q$-Laguerre polynomials. For $\stackrel{^}{q}=3$, 4, the $Q$-Laguerre prediction, with $Q=Q(\stackrel{^}{q},N)$ also computed analytically, agrees well with exact diagonalization results for $30<N\ensuremath{\le}34$ while we observe some deviations for $\stackrel{^}{q}=2$. The most salient feature of the spectral density is that, for odd $\stackrel{^}{q}$, low-energy excitations grow as a stretched exponential, with a functional form different from that of the supersymmetric SYK model. For $\stackrel{^}{q}=4$, a detailed analysis of level statistics reveals quantum chaotic dynamics even for time scales substantially shorter than the Heisenberg time. More specifically, the spacing ratios in the bulk of the spectrum and the microscopic spectral density and the number variance close to the hard edge are very well approximated by that of an ensemble of random matrices that, depending on $N$, belong to the chiral or superconducting universality classes. In particular, we report the first realization of level statistics belonging to the chiral Gaussian Unitary Ensemble universality class, which completes the tenfold-way classification in the SYK model.

Macroscopic Zero-Mode Manifold Isolated by Quantum Chaos

Cheryne Jonay, Kun W. Kim, Frank Pollmann +1 more

Chaotic many-body spectra are expected to densely fill their energy window. We show that constrained spin chains with chiral symmetry evade this expectation by hosting an exponentially large manifold of symmetry-protected exact zero modes separated from the surrounding spectrum by a sharp gap at zero energy. The gap is generated by chaotic level repulsion, with width set by the number of zero modes times the mean level spacing. We verify this mechanism in an East-West kinetically constrained chain, develop a minimal random-matrix description, and show how the gap can be detected through linear-response spectroscopy.

Symmetry classes, many-body zero modes, and supersymmetry in the complex Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model

Jan Behrends, Benjámin Béri

The complex Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (cSYK) model is a charge-conserving model of randomly interacting fermions. The interaction term can be chosen such that the model exhibits chiral symmetry. Then, depending on the charge sector and the number of interacting fermions, level spacing statistics suggests a fourfold categorization of the model into the three Wigner-Dyson symmetry classes. In this work, inspired by previous findings for the Majorana Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model, we embed the symmetry classes of the cSYK model in the Altland-Zirnbauer framework and identify consequences of chiral symmetry originating from correlations across different charge sectors. In particular, we show that for an odd number of fermions, the model hosts exact many-body zero modes that can be combined into a generalized fermion that does not affect the system's energy. This fermion directly leads to quantum-mechanical supersymmetry that, unlike explicitly supersymmetric cSYK constructions, does not require fine-tuned couplings, but only chiral symmetry. Signatures of the generalized fermion, and thus supersymmetry, include the long-time plateau in time-dependent correlation functions of fermion-parity-odd observables: The plateau may take nonzero value only for certain combinations of the fermion structure of the observable and the system's symmetry class. We illustrate our findings through exact diagonalization simulations of the system's dynamics.
