Abstract

Correlations in asymptotic fluxes provide one of the primary experimental means of studying physical systems. In the context of relativistic QFT, the formalization of such experiments in terms of detector operators has led to significant progress. Motivated by these successes, in this paper we initiate a study of detector operators in nonrelativistic conformal field theories (NRCFTs). In NRCFTs, fluxes are distributed in both angle and velocity, making the natural detector operator the energy flux differential in velocity, $\mathcal{E}_v(\hat{n})$. We provide non-perturbative definitions of these operators in NRCFTs, and study their symmetries and algebra. We calculate one-point functions of these detector observables in a variety of few and many body states of representative NRCFTs, including free fermions, as well as fermions at unitarity. In interacting three-body states, they exhibit a remarkably rich behavior reflective of the Efimov three-body wave-function, including the formation of an enhanced "jet" structure due to the presence of resonant interactions. We use these detectors to derive a nonrelativistic generalization of the Hofman-Maldacena conformal collider bounds by arguing for positivity of $\mathcal{E}_v(\hat{n})$, and imposing this in spin 1 states. We outline a number of future directions for the study of detectors in NRCFTs, and discuss how they can be measured in a variety of experimental platforms from cold atoms to low energy neutron experiments.

Nonrelativistic conformal field theory and trapped atoms: Virial theorems and the state-operator correspondence in three dimensions

Thomas Mehen

The field theory of nonrelativistic fermions interacting via contact interactions can be used to calculate the properties of few-body systems of cold atoms confined in harmonic traps. The state-operator correspondence of nonrelativistic conformal field theory (NRCFT) shows that the energy eigenvalues (in oscillator units) of $N$ harmonically trapped fermions can be calculated from the scaling dimensions of $N$-fermion operators in the NRCFT. They are also in one-to-one correspondence with zero energy, scale-invariant solutions to the $N$-body problem in free space. We show that these two mappings of the trapped fermion problem to free space problems are related by an automorphism of the $SL(2,R)$ algebra of the conformal symmetry of fermions at the unitary limit. This automorphism exchanges the internal Hamiltonian of the gas with the trapping potential and hence provides a method for deriving virial theorems for trapped Fermi gases at the unitary limit. We also show that the state-operator correspondence can be applied directly in three spatial dimensions by calculating the scaling dimensions of two- and three-fermion operators and finding agreement with known exact results for energy levels of two and three trapped fermions at the unitary limit.

Applied nonrelativistic conformal field theory: Scattering-length and effective-range corrections to rate of production of three neutrons at low relative momenta

Subham Dutta Chowdhury, Ruchira Mishra, Dam Thanh Son

Due to an accidentally large s -wave scattering length, in a relatively wide range of energy, neutrons are approximately described by the nonrelativistic conformal field theory of unitarity fermions, perturbed by one relevant and an infinite number of irrelevant operators. We develop a formalism which provides a nonperturbative definition of local operators in that nonrelativistic conformal field theory. We compute the scattering-length and effective-range corrections to the two-point functions of primary charge-three operators using the technique of conformal perturbation theory. These calculations allow us to find the first corrections to the scale-invariant behavior of the rate of nuclear reactions with three neutrons in the final state in the regime when the neutrons have small relative momenta. OPE convergence in non-relativistic conformal field theories

Walter D. Goldberger, Zuhair U. Khandker, Siddharth G. Prabhu

Motivated by applications to the study of ultracold atomic gases near the unitarity limit, we investigate the structure of the operator product expansion (OPE) in non-relativistic conformal field theories (NRCFTs). The main tool used in our analysis is the representation theory of charged (i.e. non-zero particle number) operators in the NR-CFT, in particular the mapping between operators and states in a non-relativistic “radial quantization” Hilbert space. Our results include: a determination of the OPE coefficients of descendant operators in terms of those of the underlying primary state, a demonstration of convergence of the (imaginary time) OPE in certain kinematic limits, and an estimate of the decay rate of the OPE tail inside matrix elements which, as in relativistic CFTs, depends exponentially on operator dimensions. To illustrate our results we consider several examples, including a strongly interacting field theory of bosons tuned to the unitarity limit, as well as a class of holographic models. Given the similarity with known statements about the OPE in SO(2, d) invariant field theories, our results suggest the existence of a bootstrap approach to constraining NRCFTs, with applications to bound state spectra and interactions. We briefly comment on a possible implementation of this non-relativistic conformal bootstrap program.

Non-relativistic conformal field theory in momentum space

R. K. Gupta, Meenu

Abstract Non-relativistic conformal field theory describes many-body physics at unitarity. The correlation functions of the system are fixed by the requirement of the conformal invariance. In this article, we discuss the correlation functions of scalar operators in non-relativistic conformal field theories in momentum space. We discuss the solution of conformal Ward identities and express 2,3, and 4-point functions as a function of energy and momentum. We also express the 3- and 4-point functions as the one-loop and three-loop Feynman diagram computations in the momentum space. Lastly, we generalize the discussion to the momentum space correlation functions in the presence of a boundary.

Nonrelativistic conformal field theories

Yusuke Nishida, Dam Thanh Son

We study representations of the Schr\"odinger algebra in terms of operators in nonrelativistic conformal field theories. We prove a correspondence between primary operators and eigenstates of few-body systems in a harmonic potential. Using the correspondence we compute analytically the energy of fermions at unitarity in a harmonic potential near two and four spatial dimensions. We also compute the energy of anyons in a harmonic potential near the bosonic and fermionic limits.

Operator Product Expansion and Conservation Laws in Non-Relativistic Conformal Field Theories

Siavash Golkar, Dam Thanh Son

We explore the consequences of conformal symmetry for the operator product expansions in nonrelativistic field theories. Similar to the relativistic case, the OPE coefficients of descendants are related to that of the primary. However, unlike relativistic CFTs the 3-point function of primaries is not completely specified by conformal symmetry. Here, we show that the 3-point function between operators with nonzero particle number, where (at least) one operator has the lowest dimension allowed by unitarity, is determined up to a numerical coefficient. We also look at the structure of the family tree of primaries with zero particle number and discuss the presence of conservation laws in this sector.
