Abstract

Controlling photon statistics is pivotal to many applications in classical and quantum photonics. While steady-state photon statistics have been widely studied, dynamically manipulating these statistical properties in time remains elusive. Herein, we propose a scheme to actively control photon statistics between bunching and antibunching regimes through quantum interference. Our approach relies on a Raman-coupled cavity-atom system with parametric amplification, where time modulating the detuning of the intermediate state allows us to either deepen the photon blockade or enhance photon bunching. Simultaneous modulation of the cavity and intermediate-state detunings produces antibunching that cannot be achieved under static conditions or by modulating either detuning alone. Because the modulation is periodic, the antibunching reappears at regular time intervals, enabling time-gated photon antibunching under continuous-wave operation at a repetition rate determined by the modulation frequency. These results show a versatile mechanism based on Raman-assisted quantum interference for dynamically engineering photon correlations.

All-optical active control of photon correlations: Dressed-state-assisted quantum interference effects

Dongxing Zhao

We propose an all-optical scheme to control the photon statistics using the hybrid quantum plasmonic system. With the aid of dressed-state-assisted quantum interference effects, it is shown that the photon correlations of a signal field can be continuously modulated from bunching to antibunching under the control of a pump field. Apart from the exact multimode model, a single-mode model and an analytical treatment are also provided to help us identify the roles of multimode coupling and quantum interference between probability amplitudes. The proposed scheme, in contrast to the cavity quantum electrodynamics methods, works well even in the bad cavity limit. These findings suggest that this composite system provides a feasible nanophotonic platform for active modulation of photon statistics and for future quantum devices.

Interference-Induced Photon Antibunching in a Cavity QED Setup with a Three-Level Atom

Changsuk Noh

Interference-induced photon antibunching is investigated for a three-level system coupled to a cavity mode, in which the level scheme is of a lambda type. One of the transitions is weakly coupled to the cavity mode while the other is driven by a control field. Without the control field, i.e. , in the conventional cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) scheme in the weak coupling regime, photon antibunching can be achieved by carefully choosing the coupling strength and the detuning. This condition can be alleviated by tuning the strength and the frequency of the control field. The condition for the optimal control field that yields photon blockade is derived, and the effects of changing various parameters are investigated. For a given a set of dissipation rates, the atom-cavity coupling strength g needs to be higher than a certain threshold value, although the whole system still remains in the weak coupling regime. A numerical method for finding the optimal parameter regime is proposed.

Quantum Interference Induced Photon Blockade in a Coupled Single Quantum Dot-Cavity System

Jing Tang, Weidong Geng, Xiulai Xu

We propose an experimental scheme to implement a strong photon blockade with a single quantum dot coupled to a nanocavity. The photon blockade effect can be tremendously enhanced by driving the cavity and the quantum dot simultaneously with two classical laser fields. This enhancement of photon blockade is ascribed to the quantum interference effect to avoid two-photon excitation of the cavity field. Comparing with Jaynes-Cummings model, the second-order correlation function at zero time delay g((2))(0) in our scheme can be reduced by two orders of magnitude and the system sustains a large intracavity photon number. A red (blue) cavity-light detuning asymmetry for photon quantum statistics with bunching or antibunching characteristics is also observed. The photon blockade effect has a controllable flexibility by tuning the relative phase between the two pumping laser fields and the Rabi coupling strength between the quantum dot and the pumping field. Moreover, the photon blockade scheme based on quantum interference mechanism does not require a strong coupling strength between the cavity and the quantum dot, even with the pure dephasing of the system. This simple proposal provides an effective way for potential applications in solid state quantum computation and quantum information processing.

Photon statistics of a single-atom intracavity system involving electromagnetically induced transparency

S. Rebić, A. S. Parkins, S. M. Tan

We explore the photon statistics of light emitted from a system comprising a single four-level atom strongly coupled to a high-finesse optical cavity mode that is driven by a coherent laser field. In the weak driving regime this system is found to exhibit a photon blockade effect. For intermediate driving strengths we find a sudden change in the photon statistics of the light emitted from the cavity. Photon antibunching switches to photon bunching over a very narrow range of intracavity photon number. It is proven that this sudden change in photon statistics occurs due to the existence of robust quantum interference of transitions between the dressed states of the atom-cavity system. Furthermore, it is shown that the strong photon bunching is a nonclassical effect for certain values of driving field strength, violating classical inequalities for field correlations.

Two-photon blockade in a cascaded cavity-quantum-electrodynamics system

Qian Bin, Xin‐You Lü, Shang-Wu Bin +1 more

We investigate theoretically the model of a cavity-quantum-electrodynamics (QED) system that consists of two two-level atoms coupled to a single-mode cavity in the weak coupling regime, where the system is driven by quantum light. The dynamics behavior of the entire system is tackled in the framework of a cascaded quantum system. We find that the two-photon blockade with two-photon bunching and three-photon antibunching can be obtained even when the strong system dissipation is included. This result shows that our work has potential for realizing entangled photon pairs in a weakly coupled cavity. Moreover, we also analyze the photon statistics of the system in the case of out-of-resonance coupling between cavity and two nonidentical atoms. Here, an unconventional photon blockade effect with suppression of two-photon correlation and enhancement of three-photon correlation can be realized, which shows many quantum statistical characteristics of a cavity QED system in weak coupling.
