Abstract

We study the spin-1/2 nearest-neighbor Heisenberg model on the breathing pyrochlore lattice in the mixed ferro-antiferromagnetic regime, where one tetrahedral sublattice is antiferromagnetic and the other ferromagnetic. The classical ground-state manifold is then that of the nearest-neighbor face-centered-cubic (fcc) antiferromagnet built from composite tetrahedral moments. Classical Monte Carlo simulations and the self-consistent Gaussian approximation show that thermal order-by-disorder lifts its subextensive degeneracy and selects the collinear Type-I state with wave vector $X=(1,0,0)$ through a strongly first-order transition. Pseudofermion functional renormalization group calculations for $S=1/2$ and $S=1$ reveal a nonmagnetic window adjacent to the decoupled antiferromagnetic-tetrahedron limit, beyond which $X$ order reappears. Density matrix renormalization group calculations show that this window is not featureless: the antiferromagnetic tetrahedra develop nearly ideal tetramer correlations, with four bonds carrying $\langle\mathbf{S}_i\cdot\mathbf{S}_j\rangle\simeq-1/2$ and the two opposite bonds $\simeq+1/4$, while the structure factor retains broad maxima at $X$. A third-order effective Hamiltonian in the tetrahedral-singlet manifold explains this: reversing the sign of the inter-tetrahedron coupling converts Tsunetsugu's dimer selection into a uniform tetramer selection, as confirmed by exact diagonalization. A dynamic high-temperature expansion traces how local tetrahedral excitations give way to low-energy $X$-centered spectral weight. Finally, we place density-functional parameters for eight structures of spin-3/2 breathing chromium thiospinels in the classical phase diagram. The mapping reproduces the $\mathbf{k}=(1,0,0)$ order of CuInCr$_4$S$_8$, accounts for the absence of order in LiGaCr$_4$S$_8$, and predicts Type-I order for LiInCr$_4$S$_8$.

Spin- 12 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the pyrochlore lattice: An exact diagonalization study

V. Ravi Chandra, Jyotisman Sahoo

We present exact diagonalization calculations for the spin-1/2 nearest-neighbor antiferromagnet on the pyrochlore lattice. We study a section of the lattice in the [111] direction and analyze the Hamiltonian of the breathing pyrochlore system with two coupling constants ${J}_{1}$ and ${J}_{2}$ for tetrahedra of different orientations and investigate the evolution of the system from the limit of disconnected tetrahedra (${J}_{2}=0$) to a correlated state at ${J}_{1}={J}_{2}$. We evaluate the low-energy spectrum, two and four spin correlations, and spin chirality correlations for a system size of up to 36 sites. The model shows a fast decay of spin correlations and we confirm the presence of several singlet excitations below the lowest magnetic excitation. We find chirality correlations near ${J}_{1}={J}_{2}$ to be small at the length scales available at this system size. Evaluation of dimer-dimer correlations and analysis of the nature of the entanglement of the tetrahedral unit shows that the triplet sector of the tetrahedron contributes significantly to the ground-state entanglement at ${J}_{1}={J}_{2}$.

Phase diagram of the antiferromagnetic J 1 − J 2 spin-1 pyrochlore Heisenberg model

Imre Hagymási, Nils Niggemann, Johannes Reuther

We study the phase diagram of the antiferromagnetic ${J}_{1}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{J}_{2}$ Heisenberg model on the pyrochlore lattice with $S=1$ spins at zero and finite temperatures. We use a combination of complementary state-of-the-art quantum many-body approaches such as density matrix renormalization group (DMRG), density-matrix purification, and pseudo-Majorana functional renormalization group (PMFRG). We present an efficient approach to preserve the applicability of the PMFRG for spin-1 systems at finite temperatures despite the inevitable presence of unphysical spin states. The good performance of our methods is first demonstrated for the nearest-neighbor pyrochlore Heisenberg model where the finite-temperature behavior of the specific heat and uniform susceptibility show excellent agreement within PMFRG and density-matrix purification. Including an antiferromagnetic second-neighbor coupling we find that the nonmagnetic ground-state phase of the nearest-neighbor model extents up to ${J}_{2}/{J}_{1}\ensuremath{\sim}0.02$ within DMRG, beyond which magnetic $\mathbit{k}=0$ long-range order sets in. Our PMFRG calculations find the phase transition in a similar regime ${J}_{2}/{J}_{1}\ensuremath{\sim}0.035(8)$ which, together with the DMRG result, provides a strong argument for the existence of a small but finite nonmagnetic ground-state phase in the spin-1 pyrochlore Heisenberg model. We also discuss the origin of discrepancies between different versions of the functional renormalization group concerning the location of this phase transition.

Phase diagram of the XXZ pyrochlore model from pseudo-Majorana functional renormalization group

Yannik Schaden, M. G. Gonzalez, Johannes Reuther

We calculate the magnetic phase diagram of the spin- 1 / 2 nearest neighbor XXZ pyrochlore model using the pseudo-Majorana functional renormalization group in the temperature flow formalism. Our phase diagram as a function of temperature and coupling ratio, allowing both longitudinal and transverse couplings to be ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic, reveals a large nonmagnetic regime at low temperatures, which includes the quantum spin ice phase near the antiferromagnetic Ising model, as well as the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg and XY models. We are able to detect magnetic phase transitions via critical finite size scaling down to temperatures two orders of magnitude smaller than the spin interactions, demonstrating the remarkably good performance of our method upon approaching the ground state. Specifically, the low-temperature transition from the zero-flux quantum spin ice phase into the transverse ferromagnetic phase shows very good agreement with previous quantum Monte Carlo results. Comparing our findings with classical results, we identify a quantum order-by-disorder effect near the antiferromagnetic XY model. In magnetically disordered regimes, we find characteristic patterns of broadened pinch points in the spin structure factor and investigate their evolution when approaching magnetically ordered phases. We also compute linear responses to lattice symmetry breaking perturbations and identify a possible lattice nematic ground state of the antiferromagnetic XY model.

Real-space renormalization group method for quantum 1/2 spins on the pyrochlore lattice

Ángel J. García-Adeva

A simple phenomenological real-space renormalization group method for quantum Heisenberg spins with nearest and next nearest neighbour interactions on a pyrochlore lattice is presented. Assuming a scaling law for the order parameter of two clusters of different sizes, a set of coupled equations that gives the fixed points of the renormalization group transformation and, thus, the critical temperatures and ordered phases of the system is found. The particular case of spins 1/2 is studied in detail. Furthermore, to simplify the mathematical details, from all the possible phases arising from the renormalization group transformation, only those phases in which the magnetic lattice is commensurate with a subdivision of the crystal lattice into four interlocked face-centred cubic sublattices are considered. These correspond to a quantum spin liquid, ferromagnetic order, or non-collinear order in which the total magnetic moment of a tetrahedral unit is zero. The corresponding phase diagram is constructed and the differences with respect to the classical model are analysed. It is found that this method reproduces fairly well the phase diagram of the pyrochlore lattice under the aforementioned constraints.
