Abstract

Satellite-based free-space optics (FSO) quantum key distribution (QKD) systems have recently attracted significant research interest due to their potential to enable globally secured applications. However, the inherent uncertainty of FSO channels, caused by weather conditions and satellite mobility, induces severe fluctuations in quantum bit-error rate (QBER) between legitimate users. This makes designing an efficient key reconciliation, an essential step in the QKD post-processing, particularly challenging. In this work, we propose a key reconciliation scheme that combines protograph rate-compatible (RC) low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes with a syndrome-based error estimation method. The proposed error estimation method reduces the number of communication rounds without requiring additional information disclosure. Furthermore, to our best knowledge, an analytical framework is first developed to evaluate end-to-end secret-key throughput (SKT), accounting for the impact of imperfect error estimation and dynamic FSO channel conditions. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed scheme consistently outperforms conventional blind reconciliation under diverse FSO channel conditions and provide practical guidelines for system parameter selection. Finally, we validate the proposed framework through a case study that incorporates data from a Starlink low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite and moving ground vehicles.

Blind Reconciliation with Protograph LDPC Code Extension for FSO-Based Satellite QKD Systems

Cuong T. Nguyen, Hoang D. Le, Vuong V. Mai +2 more

A significant breakthrough in space-based quantum key distribution (QKD) inaugurated by the Micius satellite has brought us closer to the era of global QKD networks. An essential step in the post-processing QKD is key reconciliation (KR), which eliminates the mismatch in the raw keys between two legitimate users. However, the fluctuation in the quantum bit-error rate (QBER) caused by the free-space optical (FSO) turbulence channels poses various challenges for the KR design. This paper addresses the design of blind KR schemes for FSO-based low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite QKD systems, which allow operating without a prior QBER estimation. Specifically, we present a novel blind KR scheme with a protograph low-density parity check (LDPC) code extension. The proposed LDPC structure is constructed by gradually extending and exhaustively searching among all possible solutions. The proposed design is evaluated in terms of the final key rate performance over the QKD systems using a dual-threshold/direct detection (DT/DD) scheme. Simulation results confirm the effectiveness of our proposed design compared to the state-of-the-art design in different turbulence channel conditions.

Multi-matrix error estimation and reconciliation for quantum key distribution

Chaohui Gao, Dong Jiang, Yu Guo +1 more

Post-processing is a significant step in quantum key distribution (QKD), which is used for correcting the quantum-channel noise errors and distilling identical corrected keys between two distant legitimate parties. Efficient error reconciliation protocol, which can lead to an increase in the secure key generation rate, is one of the main performance indicators of QKD setups. In this paper, we propose a multi-low-density parity-check codes based reconciliation scheme, which can provide remarkable perspectives for highly efficient information reconciliation. By testing our approach through data simulation, we show that the proposed scheme combining multi-syndrome-based error rate estimation allows for a more accurate estimation of the error rate as compared with random sampling and single-syndrome estimation techniques before the error correction, as well as a significant increase in the efficiency of the procedure without compromising security and sacrificing reconciliation efficiency.

Optimization of Information Reconciliation for Decoy-State Quantum Key Distribution over a Satellite Downlink Channel

Thomas Scarinzi, Davide Orsucci, Marco Ferrari +1 more

Quantum key distribution (QKD) is a cryptographic solution that leverages the properties of quantum mechanics to be resistant and secure even against an attacker with unlimited computational power. Satellite-based links are important in QKD because they can reach distances that the best fiber systems cannot. However, links between satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO) and ground stations have a duration of only a few minutes, resulting in the generation of a small amount of secure keys. In this context, we investigate the optimization of the information reconciliation step of the QKD post-processing in order to generate as much secure key as possible. As a first step, we build an accurate model of the downlink signal and quantum bit error rate (QBER) during a complete satellite pass, which are time-varying due to three effects: (i) the varying link geometry over time, (ii) the scintillation effect, and (iii) the different signal intensities adopted in the Decoy-State protocol. Leveraging the a-priori information on the instantaneous QBER, we improve the efficiency of information reconciliation (IR) (i.e., the error correction phase) in the Decoy-State BB84 protocol, resulting in a secure key that is almost 3\% longer for realistic scenarios.

Rateless Protograph LDPC Codes for Quantum Key Distribution

Alberto Tarable, Rudi Paolo Paganelli, Marco Ferrari

Information Reconciliation (IR) is a key step in Quantum key distribution (QKD). In recent years, blind reconciliation based on low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes has replaced Cascade as a standardde facto, since it guarantees efficient information reconciliation without a priori quantum bit error rate estimation and with limited interactivity between the parties, which is essential in high key-rate and long distance QKD links. In this paper, a novel blind reconciliation scheme based on rateless protograph LDPC codes is proposed. The rate adaptivity, essential for blind reconciliation, is obtained by progressively splitting LDPC check nodes, which ensures a number of degrees of freedom larger than puncturing in code design. The protograph nature of the LDPC codes allows to use the same designed codes with a large variety of sifted-key lengths, enabling a blocklength flexibility, which is important in largely varying key-rate link conditions. The code design is based on a new protograph Discretized Density Evolution tool.

High-efficiency rate-adaptive reconciliation in continuous-variable quantum key distribution

Hongzhao Yang, Shuaishuai Liu, Shenshen Yang +3 more

In continuous-variable (CV) quantum key distribution (QKD), the reconciliation efficiency and frame error rate of the information reconciliation have a significant impact on the secret key rate. For a fixed-rate multiedge-type low-density parity-check (LDPC) code, the reconciliation efficiency and frame error rate will inevitably vary due to the fluctuations of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the CV QKD system, which degrades the performance of the system. We propose a high-efficiency rate-adaptive information reconciliation scheme by combining raptorlike (RL) LDPC codes with the addition of trusted noises. We establish the model of adding trusted noises and combine it with the RL LDPC codes to optimize the secret key rate under the time-varying channel. The simulation results show that our scheme can maintain a high reconciliation efficiency of more than 94.4% and a low frame error rate within 15% fluctuation range of the SNR. Furthermore, we implement the hardware acceleration of the proposed rate-adaptive scheme on a graphics processing unit and achieve a decoding throughput of 65.5 Mbits/s by optimizing the storage of the parity-check matrix. Our results are useful for the practical CV QKD under the realistic time-varying channel.

Rate-adaptive reconciliation and its estimator for quantum bit error rate

Patcharapong Treeviriyanupab, Tharathorn Phromsa‐ard, Chun-Mei Zhang +10 more

The purpose of reconciliation, one of classical aspects of quantum key distribution (QKD) protocol, is to mitigate errors after the distribution of quantum information over a quantum channel. In this paper, a rate-adaptive method is proposed by means of a channel coding scheme where specific low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes are adapted in the Slepian-Wolf coding system. Puncturing and shortening techniques are adopted to optimize their coding rates with all possible cases of error in QKD. This successful method utilizes the knowledge of the quantum bit error rate (QBER) based on the maximum-likelihood estimator with respect to the syndrome information. Its benefit is that avoids wasting sample keys in the traditional channel estimation and thus increases the size of the final secret key. Evidently, simulation results confirm an improvement in the reconciliation efficiency with minimal interaction that suitable for high QKD throughput applications.
