Abstract

Universal power-law decay of spin-mixing oscillations has been observed in a harmonically trapped spin-$3/2$ Fermi gas, whose exactly equally spaced spectrum represents a highly special case. To gain insight into the origin of this behavior, we investigate the dynamics in traps with increasing and decreasing level spacings, represented by the infinite square well and the Pöschl--Teller potential, respectively. Despite pronounced differences in their single-particle spectra, all systems exhibit power-law decay of coherent oscillations, described by $A(t) = A_{0} - γt^α$. The exponent $α$ remains insensitive to particle number, interaction strength, and the overall energy scale, but exhibits systematic differences among traps with distinct spectral structures. In contrast, the decay parameter $γ$ is strongly influenced by both the spectral structure and the overall energy scale. These findings demonstrate that power-law decay is not restricted to the harmonic trap but persists across qualitatively distinct spectral structures. The observed variation of $α$ among different traps further suggests that the underlying single-particle spectrum plays an important role in shaping the decay dynamics.

Nonthermal Dynamics and Scar-Like Spectral Structures in a High-Spin Fermi Gas

Shuyi Li, Qiang Gu

We investigate nonequilibrium dynamics and weak ergodicity breaking in a harmonically trapped spin-$3/2$ Fermi gas by using the time-dependent Hartree-Fock equation. The Shannon entropy remains bounded and oscillatory throughout the evolution, indicating restricted and nonuniform exploration of Hilbert space rather than immediate thermalization. The fidelity exhibits pronounced, nearly periodic revivals whose period is largely insensitive to particle number and interaction strength, while the revival amplitude gradually decreases with increasing system size and interaction strength. The Fourier spectrum of the fidelity reveals a set of sharp and approximately equally spaced peaks. By projecting the time-evolved state onto the instantaneous eigenbasis of the self-consistent mean-field Hamiltonian, we identify a sparse and spectrally stable manifold that forms a quasi-regular energy ladder, with spacing comparable to the dominant quasienergy interval extracted from the fidelity spectrum. These results indicate that the long-lived coherent oscillations originate from collective phase interference associated with a quasi-regular spectral structure embedded in the many-body continuum, rather than from a conventional eigenstate-dominated scar mechanism.

Universal spin-mixing oscillations in a strongly interacting one-dimensional Fermi gas

Giovanni Pecci, Patrizia Vignolo, Anna Minguzzi

We study the spin-mixing dynamics of a one-dimensional strongly repulsive Fermi gas under harmonic confinement. By employing a mapping onto an inhomogeneous isotropic Heisenberg model and the symmetries under particle exchange, we follow the dynamics until very long times. Starting from an initial spin-separated state, we observe superdiffusion, spin-dipolar large amplitude oscillations, and thermalization. We report a universal scaling of the oscillations with particle number ${N}^{1/4}$. Our Letter puts forward one-dimensional correlated fermions as a different system to observe the emergence of nonequilibrium universal features.

Observation of Dynamical Super-Efimovian Expansion in a Unitary Fermi Gas

Shujin Deng, Pengpeng Diao, Fang Li +3 more

We report an observation of a dynamical super Efimovian expansion in a strongly interacting Fermi gas by engineering time dependent external harmonic trap frequencies. When the trap frequency is tailored as [1/4t^{2}+1/t^{2}λlog^{2}(t/t_{*})]^{1/2}, where t_{*} and λ are two controllable parameters, and the change is faster than a critical value, the expansion of such a quantum gas shows novel dynamics that share the same characteristics as the super Efimov effect. A clear double-log periodicity with discrete geometric scaling emerges for the cloud size in the expansion. The universality of such scaling dynamics is verified both in the noninteracting and in the unitarity limit of Fermi gas. Moreover, the measured energy scaling reveals that the potential and internal energy also show double-log periodicity with a π/2 phase difference, but the total energy is monotonically decreased. Observing super Efimovian evolution represents a paradigm in probing universal properties and allows us in a new way to study many-body nonequilibrium dynamics with experiments.

Quasi-long-range order in trapped two-dimensional Bose gases

Igor Boettcher, Markus Holzmann

We study the fate of algebraic decay of correlations in a harmonically trapped two-dimensional degenerate Bose gas. The analysis is inspired by recent experiments on ultracold atoms where power-law correlations have been observed despite the presence of the external potential. We generalize the spin wave description of phase fluctuations to the trapped case and obtain an analytical expression for the one-body density matrix within this approximation. We show that algebraic decay of the central correlation function persists to lengths of about 20% of the Thomas-Fermi radius. We establish that the trap-averaged correlation function decays algebraically with a strictly larger exponent weakly changing with trap size and find indications that the recently observed enhanced scaling exponents receive significant contributions from the normal component of the gas. We discuss radial and angular correlations and propose a local correlation approximation which captures the correlations very well. Our analysis goes beyond the usual local density approximation and the developed summation techniques constitute a powerful tool to investigate correlations in inhomogeneous systems.

Angular Momentum Oscillations in Rotating Two-Dimensional Fermi Gases Confined by Harmonic Traps

A. Berkane

We investigate the angular momentum of a two-dimensional non-interacting Fermi gas confined in a rotating harmonic trap. By employing a quantum statistical approach, analytical expressions for the angular momentum are derived and analyzed as functions of particle number and rotation frequency. The rotational motion introduces a shell structure in the energy spectrum, giving rise to oscillatory behavior analogous to the de Haas–van Alphen oscillations observed in electronic systems subjected to magnetic fields. Numerical calculations reveal that these oscillations are most pronounced for weak rotation and small particle numbers, while they become progressively damped as the particle number increases. The results emphasize the close analogy between ultracold rotating gases and charged particles in magnetic fields and provide further insight into quantum rotational effects in confined Fermi systems.

Scale Invariance of a Spherical Unitary Fermi Gas

Lu Wang, Xiangchuan Yan, Jing Min +5 more

A unitary Fermi gas in an isotropic harmonic trap is predicted to show scale and conformal symmetry that have important consequences in its thermodynamic and dynamical properties. By experimentally realizing a unitary Fermi gas in an isotropic harmonic trap, we demonstrate its universal expansion dynamics along each direction and at different temperatures. We show that as a consequence of SO(2,1) symmetry, the measured release energy is equal to that of the trapping energy. We further observe the breathing mode with an oscillation frequency twice the trapping frequency and a small damping rate, providing the evidence of SO(2,1) symmetry. In addition, away from resonance when scale invariance is broken, we determine the effective exponent γ that relates the chemical potential and average density along the BEC-BCS crossover, which qualitatively agrees with the mean field predictions. This Letter opens the possibility of studying nonequilibrium dynamics in a conformal invariant system in the future.
