Abstract

We study quantum droplets in a symmetric two-component Bose mixture with interspecies $p$-wave interactions and a two-dimensional transverse optical lattice. The lattice drives a crossover from an anisotropic three-dimensional gas to weakly coupled one-dimensional tubes. We calculate the ground-state energy and quantum depletion at the Gaussian level and derive their limiting forms. At $y=g_{12}/g=-0.95$, where the bare mean field is repulsive and no free-space droplet exists, the calculated bulk equation of state supports a self-bound minimum across the crossover: a negative lattice contribution at order $n^{2}$ supplies the attraction in the three-dimensional regime, and attractive fluctuations do so in the quasi-one-dimensional regime, with the intermediate, transdimensional range described quantitatively by neither limit. The interspecies $p$-wave interaction modifies only the spin branch. In the parameter range studied, increasing its strength lowers the equilibrium density across the crossover, consistently with a weakening of the induced binding.

Microscopic pairing theory of a binary Bose mixture with interspecies attractions: Bosonic BEC-BCS crossover and ultradilute low-dimensional quantum droplets

Hui Hu, Jia Wang, Xia-Ji Liu

Ultradilute quantum droplets are an intriguing new state of matter, in which the attractive mean-field force can be balanced by the repulsive force from quantum fluctuations to avoid collapse. Here, we present a microscopic theory of ultradilute quantum droplets in three-, one-, and two-dimensional two-component Bose-Bose mixtures by generalizing the conventional Bogoliubov theory to include the bosonic pairing arising from the interspecies attraction. Our pairing theory is fully equivalent to a variational approach and hence gives an upper bound for the energy of quantum droplets. In three dimensions, we predict the existence of a strongly interacting Bose droplet at the crossover from Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) to BCS superfluids and map out the bosonic BEC-BCS crossover phase diagram. In one dimension, we find that the energy of the one-dimensional Bose droplet calculated by the pairing theory is in excellent agreement with the latest diffusion Monte Carlo simulation [L. Parisi et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 122, 105302 (2019)] for nearly all the interaction strengths at which quantum droplets exist. In two dimensions, we show that Bose droplets disappear and may turn into a solitonlike many-body bound state, when the interspecies attraction exceeds a critical value. Below the threshold, the pairing theory predicts more or less the same results as the Bogoliubov theory derived by D. S. Petrov and G. E. Astrakharchik [Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 100401 (2016)]. The predicted energies from both theories are higher than the diffusion Monte Carlo results due to the weak interspecies attraction and the increasingly important role played by the beyond-Bogoliubov-approximation effect in two dimensions. Our pairing theory provides an ideal starting point to understand interesting ground-state properties of quantum droplets in various dimensions, including their shape and collective oscillations.

Low-dimensional self-bound quantum Rabi-coupled bosonic droplets

Emerson Chiquillo

We analytically calculate the leading quantum corrections of the ground-state energy of two- and one-dimensional weakly interacting Rabi-coupled Bose-Bose mixtures in the frame of the Bogoliubov approximation. We show that to repulsive intraspecies and attractive interspecies interactions, the effect of quantum fluctuations favors the formation of self-bound droplets. These liquidlike states are crucially affected by the Rabi coupling, leading thus to the appearance of a quantum instability. We derive meaningful formulas to describe the droplet phase in the one-dimensional case.

Quantum droplets in one-dimensional mixtures of quasi–Bose-Einstein condensates and Tonks-Girardeau gases

Anonymous, Su Yi, Thomas Busch

While binary atomic Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) are typically prone to collapse under strong interspecies attraction, it has been shown that higher-order fluctuation corrections, known as Lee-Huang-Yang corrections, can stabilize the mixture. In this work we demonstrate an alternative stabilization mechanism based on kinetic energy. Specifically, we consider a one-dimensional mixture of a quasi-BEC and a Tonks-Girardeau (TG) gas and show that the kinetic energy of the TG component can counteract the interspecies attraction, thereby preventing collapse. This balance leads to the formation of a self-bound quantum droplet, which exhibits two distinct regimes: a low-density droplet and a high-density droplet. We argue that these regimes are smoothly connected by a crossover. Furthermore, an analysis of the derivatives of the ground-state energy and bulk modulus reveals that the transition from a miscible mixture to the droplet phase is of third order. Our findings extend the theoretical understanding of quantum droplets in low-dimensional quantum gases, and the proposed system may be experimentally accessible within current ultracold-atom platforms.

Quantum droplets of bosonic mixtures in a one-dimensional optical lattice

Ivan Morera, G. E. Astrakharchik, Polls Martí, Artur +1 more

We demonstrate the existence of quantum droplets in two-component one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard chains. The droplets exist for any strength of repulsive intraspecies interactions provided they are balanced by comparable attractive interspecies interactions. The ground-state phase diagram is presented and the different phases are characterized by examining the density profile and off-diagonal one- and two-body correlation functions. A rich variety of phases is found, including atomic superfluid gases, atomic superfluid droplets, pair superfluid droplets, pair superfluid gases, and a Mott-insulator phase. A parameter region prone to be experimentally explored is identified, where the average population per site is lower than three atoms, thus avoiding three-body losses. Finally, the bipartite entanglement of the droplets is found to have a nontrivial dependence on the number of particles.

Quantum liquid droplets in Bose mixtures with weak disorder

Karima Abbas, Abdelâali Boudjemâa

We study the properties of self-bound liquid droplets of three-dimensional Bose mixtures in a weak random potential with Gaussian correlation function at both zero and finite temperatures. Using the Bogoliubov theory, we derive useful formulas for the ground-state energy, the equilibrium density, the depletion, and the anomalous density of the droplet. The quantum fluctuation induced by the disorder known as the glassy fraction is also systematically computed. At finite temperature, we calculate the free energy, the thermal equilibrium density, and the critical temperature in terms of the disorder parameters. We show that when the strength and the correlation length of the disorder potential exceed a certain critical value, the droplet evaporates and is eventually entirely destroyed. We calculate the density profiles of this exotic state by means of numerical simulations of the corresponding generalized disorder Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Our predictions reveal that as the strength of the disorder gets larger, the atomic density varies rapidly in the plateau region. We point out in addition that the peculiar interplay of the disorder and the repulsive Lee-Huang-Yang corrections play a pivotal role in the collective modes of the self-bound droplet.

Stabilization of Bose-Bose mixtures on a spherical surface induced by the Lee-Huang-Yang correction

Wenhao Li, Ming Gong, Zheng-Wei Zhou +1 more

Motivated by recent experimental advances in bubble traps which confine atoms on a thin shell, we investigate the stabilization of droplet states of a Bose-Bose mixture on a spherical surface due to quantum fluctuations. We analytically calculate the energy of a weakly interacting Bose-Bose mixture on a spherical surface with attractive interspecies and repulsive intraspecies interactions using the Bogoliubov approximation. Our findings show that the energy per particle has a minimum at a finite density in the presence of the Lee-Huang-Yang (LHY) term, which indicates the presence of liquidlike droplet state stabilized by quantum fluctuations. We also numerically solve the extended Gross-Pitaevskii equation, incorporating both bubble traps and an additional repulsive LHY correction derived from the Bogoliubov spectrum of a three-dimensional homogeneous mixture. Our calculations show that, due to the size limitations of the sphere, droplet states can only exist within specific parameter ranges. We also verify the transition between droplet states and uniform condensates in spherical confinement potentials, as well as the coexistence of the two. Our results pave the way for future exploration of quantum droplets in curved geometries with nontrivial real-space topologies.
