Abstract

We investigate timelike entanglement in quantum field theory using spacetime density matrices and provide a microscopic lattice realization. For a two-dimensional free real scalar field, we extend Gaussian diagonalization methods to the generally non-Hermitian reduced spacetime density matrix and determine its complete nonzero spectrum in the generic regular case, together with all integer Rényi moments. The real-time replica construction identifies these moments with Lorentzian branch-point twist-operator correlation functions. We test this identification against the full four-point function on a circle, boundary two-point functions with Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions, and massive form-factor predictions, finding quantitative agreement in both magnitude and phase across distinct causal regimes. The boundary setup exhibits a finite causally connected window in which every integer Rényi entropy is real, showing that reality is not equivalent to causal disconnection. These results provide a microscopic lattice foundation for timelike entanglement and for Lorentzian twist-operator methods beyond equal-time regions.

Entanglement of general subregions in time-dependent states

Tao Liu, Wu-zhong Guo, Song He

A bstract We develop a unified framework for computing Rényi and entanglement entropies of arbitrary spacetime intervals in time-dependent states of (1 + 1)-dimensional conformal field theories. By combining the spacetime density matrix formalism with the replica method, we show that entanglement entropy is well defined for both spacelike and timelike separations. Applying this framework to global quenches prepared by boundary states and to local quenches generated by operator insertions, we obtain analytic expressions for the entanglement entropy in general spacetime configurations. The results reveal qualitative differences between spacelike and timelike intervals: the timelike entanglement entropy is time-independent in the global quench model, depends solely on the temporal separation, and universally exhibits a constant imaginary contribution. These features are naturally explained by a generalized quasiparticle picture in which entanglement is produced precisely when one worldline of each quasiparticle pair intersects the interval. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the linear sum rule relating time- and spacelike entanglement persists in both global and local quenches, indicating a broader universality of spacetime entanglement in real-time quantum dynamics.

Temporal Entanglement from Twist Correlators in 2d Conformal Field Theory and Holography

Alice Bernamonti, Federico Galli, Michal P. Heller +2 more

We formulate timelike entanglement entropy and its Rényi extension in two-dimensional conformal field theory through the analytic continuation of replica twist correlators to time-ordered, timelike-separated insertions. This field-theoretic construction grounds and generalizes recent developments, and applies to temporal subregions of arbitrary extent. Within three-dimensional holography, the semiclassical boundary correlator identifies boundary-anchored complex geodesics as the relevant bulk saddles and selects the one with the smallest real part of the length. This provides a direct boundary derivation of the proposed complex extremal surface prescription and extends to Rényi index $n>1$, for which we explicitly construct the corresponding complex cosmic brane geometry in the vacuum. We develop these ideas in several representative settings, including locally and globally excited states and quantum operator quenches, making manifest the precise agreement between boundary twist correlator and bulk complex geodesic calculations. For AdS-Vaidya, our approach predicts a different result from earlier piecewise geodesic constructions, while reproducing the field theory answer. Across these examples, the operator ordering uniquely determines the imaginary part of the complex-valued entropy, which is quantized in units of $cπ/6$ and sensitive to the effective causal structure but not to the underlying dynamics.

Temporal correlations and chaos from spacetime kernels

Rathindra Nath Das, Arnab Kundu, Matheus H. Martins Costa +1 more

A bstract We develop a finite-dimensional formulation of the recently introduced notion of “timelike entanglement”, defined in terms of two-point functions between operators supported on different Cauchy slices. Using a local orthonormal operator basis, we recast this construction in terms of a generalized response tensor . Building on this, we introduce a generalized spacetime density kernel (GSDK) corresponding to higher point correlation functions, including time-ordered as well as out-of-time-ordered correlators. Motivated by the structure of Haar probe averaging, we contract the (2 N )-leg GSDK with cyclic permutation operators and thereby define a kernel form factor . This quantity is computable even when Haar averaging is not feasible, and it reduces to the (2 N )-th moment of the spectral form factor, evaluated at an N -enhanced effective temperature. The correlation functions of the GSDK operators also yield the SFF, with an effective (1/ N )-reduction of the physical time-scales. The GSDK places both early time scrambling diagnostics and late time spectral statistics on a similar footing and clarifies how higher-point correlators and non-trivial time ordering capture fine-grained dynamical information of a quantum system.

Relation between time- and spacelike entanglement entropy

Wu-zhong Guo, Song He, Yu-Xuan Zhang

In this study, we establish a connection between time- and spacelike entanglement entropy. We show that timelike entanglement entropy is closely related to spacelike entanglement entropy and its temporal derivative. For a broad class of states, it can be uniquely determined by a linear combination of spacelike entanglement entropy and its first-order temporal derivative. This relation holds, for instance, in states conformally equivalent to the vacuum in two-dimensional conformal field theories. For more general states, we demonstrate that the relation can be constructed perturbatively. Our results suggest that timelike entanglement entropy is constrained by causality. Moreover, this relation provides a unified framework for time- and spacelike entanglement entropy, within which the imaginary component of timelike entanglement entropy can be understood as arising from the noncommutativity between the twist operator and its first-order temporal derivative.
