The monomer-dimer model is one of the most well-known unsolved lattice models. In this paper we study the monomer-dimer model on the honeycomb lattice using the tensor network method, in the case that the dimer and monomer activities are 1. The monomer-dimer configurations are exactly mapped into the ground states of the antiferromagnetic Ising model on the Kagomé lattice in the critical field $H_{\rm{ex}}=4J$, and the tensor network is constructed based on the local ground states of each Ising triangle. The VUMPS approach is employed to contract the tensor network, providing a high-precision result of the monomer-dimer problem. We also revisit the edge coloring problem on the honeycomb lattice and discuss its relationship to the monomer-dimer model. Finally we formulate the monomer-dimer problem in the language of the sixteen-vertex model, and discuss the non-integrability of the general monomer-dimer model and the integrability of the pure dimer model.

We consider dimers on the star lattice (aka the 3-12, Fisher, expanded kagome or triangle-honeycomb lattice). We show that dimer coverings on this lattice have Z_2 arrow and pseudo-spin representations analogous to those for the kagome lattice, and use these to construct an exactly solvable quantum dimer model (QDM) with a Rokhsar-Kivelson (RK) ground state. This QDM, first discussed by Moessner and Sondhi from a different point of view, is the star-lattice analogue of a kagome-lattice QDM analyzed by Misguich et al. We give a detailed analysis of various properties of the classical equal-weight dimer model on the star lattice, most of which are related to those of the RK state. Using both the arrow representation and the fermionic path integral formulation of the Pfaffian method, we calculate the number of dimer coverings, dimer occupation probabilities, and dimer, vison, and monomer correlation functions. We show that a dimer is uncorrelated with dimers further away than on neighboring triangles, that the vison-vison correlation function vanishes, and that the monomer-monomer correlation function equals 1/4 regardless of the monomer positions (with one exception). A key result in the fermionic approach is the vanishing of the two-point Green function beyond a short distance. These properties are very similar to those of dimers on the kagome lattice. We also discuss some generalizations involving arrow representations for dimer coverings on general Fisher lattices and their reduced lattices, with the kagome, squagome, and triangular kagome lattice being examples of the latter.

Traditional SU ( N ) lattice gauge theories (LGTs) can be formulated using an orthonormal basis constructed from the irreducible representations (irreps) V λ of the SU ( N ) gauge symmetry. On a lattice, the elements of this basis are tensor networks comprising dimer tensors on the links labeled by a set of irreps { λ ℓ } and monomer tensors on sites labeled by { λ s } . These tensors naturally define a local site Hilbert space, H s g , on which gauge transformations act. Gauss’s law introduces an additional index α s = 1 , 2 , … , D ( H s g ) that labels an orthonormal basis of the gauge-invariant subspace of H s g . This monomer-dimer tensor-network (MDTN) basis, | { λ s } , { λ ℓ } , { α s } ⟩ , of the physical Hilbert space enables the construction of new qubit-regularized SU ( N ) gauge theories that are free of sign problems while preserving key features of traditional LGTs. Here, we investigate finite-temperature confinement-deconfinement transitions in a simple qubit-regularized SU(2) and SU(3) gauge theory in d = 2 and d = 3 spatial dimensions, formulated using the MDTN basis, and show that they reproduce the universal results of traditional LGTs at these transitions. Additionally, in d = 1 , we demonstrate using a plaquette chain that the string tension at zero temperature can be continuously tuned to zero by adjusting a model parameter that plays the role of the gauge coupling in traditional LGTs.
Using the tensor network approach, we investigate the monomer-dimer models on a checkerboard lattice, in which there are interactions (with strength v) between the parallel dimers on half of the plaquettes. For the fully packed interacting dimer model, we observe a Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) transition between the low-temperature symmetry breaking and the high-temperature critical phases; for the doped monomer-dimer case with finite chemical potential $\ensuremath{\mu}$, we also find an order-disorder phase transition which is of second order instead. We use the boundary matrix product state approach to detect the KT and second-order phase transitions and obtain the phase diagrams $v\text{\ensuremath{-}}T$ and $\ensuremath{\mu}\text{\ensuremath{-}}T$. Moreover, for the noninteracting monomer-dimer model (setting $\ensuremath{\mu}=\ensuremath{\nu}=0$), we get an extraordinarily accurate determination of the free energy per site (negative of the monomer-dimer constant h2) as $f=\ensuremath{-}0.662\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}798\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}972\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}833\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}746$ with the dimer density n=0.638123109228547, both of 15 correct digits.
We derive exact results for close-packed dimers on the triangular kagome lattice (TKL), formed by inserting triangles into the triangles of the kagome lattice. Because the TKL is a nonbipartite lattice, dimer-dimer correlations are short ranged so that the ground state at the Rokhsar-Kivelson (RK) point of the corresponding quantum dimer model on the same lattice is a short-ranged spin liquid. Using the Pfaffian method, we derive an exact form for the free energy, and we find that the entropy is 31ln2 per site, regardless of the weights of the bonds. The occupation probability of every bond is 41 in the case of equal weights on every bond. Similar to the case of lattices formed by corner-sharing triangles (such as the kagome and squagome lattices), we find that the dimer-dimer correlation function is identically zero beyond a certain (short) distance. We find in addition that monomers are deconfined on the TKL, indicating that there is a short-ranged spin liquid phase at the RK point. We also find exact results for the ground-state energy of the classical Heisenberg model. The ground state can be ferromagnetic, ferrimagnetic, locally coplanar, or locally canted, depending on the couplings. From the dimer model and the classical spin model, we derive upper bounds on the ground-state energy of the quantum Heisenberg model on the TKL.
We study a monomer-dimer mixture defined on a honeycomb lattice as a toy model for the spin-ice system in a magnetic field. In a low-doping region of monomers, the effective description of this system is given by the dual sine-Gordon model. In intermediate- and strong-doping regions, the Potts lattice gas theory can be employed. Synthesizing these results, we construct a renormalization-group flow diagram, which includes the stable and unstable fixed points corresponding to M5 and M6 in the minimal models of the conformal field theory. We perform numerical transfer-matrix calculations to determine a global phase diagram and also to proffer evidence to check our prediction.
