Abstract

We present details of an experimental platform for studying Fermi polarons in a quantum-gas mixture. The system consists of about a thousand bosonic $^{133}$Cs impurities immersed in a deeply degenerate Fermi gas ($T/T_F \sim 0.2$) of approximately $2\times 10^5$ $^6$Li atoms in a single hyperfine state, with interspecies interactions tunable via a Feshbach resonance. Using optical Raman spectroscopy without relative momentum transfer, we perform injection spectroscopy and thereby create the Fermi polaron. Owing to the large mass imbalance between the two species, the setup provides access to previously unexplored regimes of Fermi polarons.

Fermionic quantum mixtures with tunable interactions

Rudolf Grimm, Cosetta Baroni

The topic of the present lecture notes are two-species quantum mixtures composed of a deeply degenerate Fermi gas and a second component, the latter being fermionic or bosonic. A key ingredient is the possibility to tune the $s$-wave interaction between the different species by means of magnetically controlled Feshbach resonances, which allow us to investigate regimes of strong interactions. In two case studies, we review our experiments on mixtures of $^6$Li fermions with fermionic $^{40}$K or bosonic $^{41}$K atoms and on mixtures of fermionic $^{161}$Dy with $^{40}$K atoms. We cover various topics of fermionic quantum many-body physics, ranging from impurity physics and quasiparticles over phase separation to the formation of ultracold molecules and progress towards novel superfluids.

Polarons in extremely polarized Fermi gases: The strongly interacting 6 Li- 40 K mixture

J. E. Baarsma, J. Armaitis, R. A. Duine +1 more

We study the extremely polarized two-component Fermi gas with a mass imbalance in the strongly interacting regime. Specifically we focus on the experimentally available mixture of ${}^{6}$Li and ${}^{40}$K atoms. In this regime spin polarons, i.e., dressed minority atoms, form. We consider the spectral function for the minority atoms, from which the lifetime and the effective mass of the spin polaron can be determined. Moreover, we predict the radio-frequency (rf) spectrum and the momentum distribution for the spin polarons for experiments with ${}^{6}$Li and ${}^{40}$K atoms. Subsequently we study the relaxation of the motion of the Fermi polaron due to spin drag.

Interspecies Feshbach Resonances in an Ultracold, Optically Trapped Bose-Fermi Mixture of Cesium and Lithium

Marc Repp

This thesis reports on the tunability of interactions in ultracold Bose-Fermi mixtures of Cesium and Lithium. The \nfirst realization of an optically trapped \n6Li -133Cs mixture enabled to perform trap loss spectroscopy measurements to identify \nmagnetic Feshbach resonances. A total of 19 interspecies Feshbach resonances, all in the magnetic field range between 650 G and 950 G, were observed for the two energetically lowest spin states of each species. Two 5 G broad and especially two 60 G broad s-wave resonances give perspectives to produce a dipolar quantum gas of LiCs ground state molecules as well as to study the Efimov effect in highly mass imbalanced systems. In addition, a unique relative tunability of intra- and interspecies \nscattering lengths was found which makes the 6Li -133Cs system also well suited for the investigation of polarons. Evaporative cooling was performed on optically trapped samples which contained only one of the species. In this way, Bose-Einstein condensates of 6Li molecules as well as 133Cs samples at a phase-space density of p = 4 · 10^2 were prepared. All experiments were performed in a new apparatus, which has been designed and set up during this thesis.

Impurities and polarons in bosonic quantum gases: a review on recent progress

Fabian Grusdt, Nader Mostaan, Eugene Demler +1 more

This review describes the field of Bose polarons, arising when mobile impurities are immersed into a bosonic quantum gas. The latter can be realized by a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of ultracold atoms, or of exciton polaritons in a semiconductor, which has led to a series of experimental observations of Bose polarons near inter-species Feshbach resonances that we survey. Following an introduction to the topic, with references to its historic roots and a presentation of the Bose polaron Hamiltonian, we summarize state-of-the-art experiments. Next we provide a detailed discussion of polaron models, starting from the ubiquitous Fröhlich Hamiltonian that applies at weak couplings. We proceed by a survey of concurrent theoretical methods used for solving strongly interacting Bose polaron problems. The subsequent sections are devoted to the large bodies of work investigating strong coupling Bose polarons, including detailed comparisons with radio-frequency (RF) spectra obtained in ultracold atom experiments; to investigations of universal few-body and Efimov states associated with a Feshbach resonance in atomic mixtures; to studies of quantum dynamics and polarons out of equilibrium; Bose polarons in low-dimensional; induced interactions among polarons and bipolaron formation; and to Bose polarons at non-zero temperatures. We end our review by detailed discussions of closely related experimental setups and systems, including ionic impurities, systems with strong light-matter interactions, and variations and extensions of the Bose polaron concepts e.g. to baths with topological order or strong interactions relevant for correlated electrons. Finally, an outlook is presented, highlighting possible future research directions and open questions in the field as a whole.

Observation of interspecies 6 Li- 133 Cs Feshbach resonances

M. Repp, R. Pires, Juris Ulmanis +4 more

We report on the observation of 19 interspecies Feshbach resonances in an optically trapped ultracold Bose-Fermi mixture of ${}^{133}\text{Cs}$ and ${}^{6}\text{Li}$ in the two energetically lowest spin states. We assign the resonances to $s$- and $p$-wave molecular channels by a coupled-channels calculation, resulting in an accurate determination of LiCs ground-state potentials. Fits of the resonance position based on the undressed asymptotic bound state model do not provide the same level of accuracy as the coupled-channels calculation. Several broad $s$-wave resonances provide prospects to create fermionic LiCs molecules with a large dipole moment via Feshbach association followed by stimulated Raman passage. Two of the $s$-wave resonances overlap with a zero crossing of the Cs scattering length, which offers prospects for the investigation of polarons in an ultracold Li-Cs mixture.

Feshbach spectroscopy of ultracold mixtures of Li 6 and Dy 164 atoms

Ke Xie, Xi Li, Yu-Yang Zhou +7 more

We report on the observation of Feshbach resonances in ultracold $^{6}\mathrm{Li}\text{\ensuremath{-}}^{164}\mathrm{Dy}$ mixtures, where $^{6}\mathrm{Li}$ atoms are respectively prepared in their three lowest spin states and $^{164}\mathrm{Dy}$ atoms are prepared in their lowest-energy state. We observe 21 interspecies scattering resonances over a magnetic-field range from 0 to 702 G using atom loss spectroscopy, three of which exhibit relatively broad widths. These broad resonances provide precise control over the interspecies interaction strength, enabling the study of strongly interacting effects in $^{6}\mathrm{Li}\text{\ensuremath{-}}^{164}\mathrm{Dy}$ mixtures. Additionally, we observe a well-isolated interspecies resonance at 700.1 G, offering a unique platform to explore novel impurity physics, where heavy dipolar $^{164}\mathrm{Dy}$ atoms are immersed in a strongly interacting Fermi superfluid of $^{6}\mathrm{Li}$ atoms.
