The spin-1/2 Heisenberg XXZ chain and the Lorentz mirror model with loop weight 2

Abstract

We prove that for the spin-1/2 Heisenberg XXZ chain in the range $Δ\in[-1,1/2]$, the ground state on the torus of length $L$ converges to an infinite volume ground state $\langle\cdot\rangle$ as $L\to\infty$, and that the spin-spin correlation $\langle S_0^{(1)}S_x^{(1)}\rangle$ decays polynomially fast in $x$. In the range $Δ\in[-1,0]$ we have the stronger results: that the convergence holds for several finite-volume, finite temperature states, that $L$ and $β=1/T$ can be taken to infinity in any order, that the convergence holds on (Euclidean) dynamic correlators, and that $\langle S_0^{(1)}S_x^{(1)}(t)\rangle$ decays to zero in $|(x,t)|$, and cannot decay exponentially fast. The convergence of the ground state in infinite volume is known rigorously by Bethe Ansatz methods, while our correlation decay results (apart from the points $Δ=0,-1$), the convergence on dynamic correlators and the interchangeability of limits are new at the rigorous level. Moreover our methods are new and do not use any Bethe Ansatz techniques, using only the following related probabilistic models. In the Lorentz mirror model with loop weight 2, a model of random loops on the square lattice, in a large range of parameters we prove that connection probabilities tend to 0, and do so polynomially fast in the symmetric case of the model. Our proof uses two couplings of this mirror model with the six-vertex model, one of which is new. The main input is the delocalisation of the height function of the six-vertex model proved by several authors. We further prove that the height function of a certain space-time version of the six-vertex model delocalises and then prove through analogous couplings to those mentioned above that connection probabilities converge to 0 in the loop representation of the XXZ model introduced by Ueltschi.

Dimerization in $O(n)$-invariant quantum spin chains

Jakob E. Björnberg, Kieran Ryan

We establish dimerization in $O(n)$-invariant quantum spin chains with large enough $n$, in a much larger region of the phase diagram than previous results. This entails identifying two distinct infinite volume ground states which are gapped, are translations by one unit of each other, and which both have exponentially decaying correlations. We show these states are the limits of finite-volume, finite temperature states as the graph tends to $\mathbb{Z}$ and temperature tends to zero in any order. Our method relies on a probabilistic representation of the quantum system in terms of random loops, and an adaptation of a method developed for loop $O(n)$ models on the hexagonal lattice by Duminil-Copin, Peled, Samotij and Spinka.

String correlation functions of the spin-1/2 HeisenbergXXZchain

Michael Bortz, Jun Sato, Masahiro Shiroishi

We calculate certain string correlation functions, originally introduced as order parameters in integer spin chains, for the spin-1/2 XXZ Heisenberg chain at zero temperature and in the thermodynamic limit. For small distances, we obtain exact results from Bethe Ansatz and exact diagonalization, whereas in the large-distance limit, field-theoretical arguments yield an asymptotic algebraic decay. We also make contact with two-point spin-correlation functions in the asymptotic limit.

CORRELATION FUNCTIONS OF THE XXZ SPIN-½ HEISENBERG CHAIN: RECENT ADVANCES (REVIEW)

N Kitanine, Jean Michel Maillet, N. A. Slavnov +1 more

We review some recent advances in the computation of exact correlation functions of the XXZ-½ Heisenberg chain. We first give a general introduction to our method which is based on the algebraic Bethe ansatz and the resolution of the quantum inverse scattering problem, leading in particular to multiple integral representations for the correlation functions. Then we describe recently obtained compact formulas for the spin-spin correlation functions of the XXZ-½ Heisenberg chain. We outline how this leads to several explicit results including the known two point functions in the limit of free fermions, the so-called emptiness formation probability at anisotropy Δ=1/2 and its large distance asymptotic behaviour in the massless phase of the model.

Monte Carlo simulation of the S=(1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain and the long-distance behavior of the spin-correlation function

Kenn Kubo, T. A. Kaplan, J. Borysowicz

We present a new Monte Carlo simulation of the correlation function C(r) between two spins separated by a distance r in the ground state of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain. The calculation is based on the Sutherland mapping between the spin-chain ground state and the six-vertex model at its critical temperature. New results are obtained for rings with the number of spins N=32 and 40. We give evidence that the asymptotic decay of C(r) at large r is slower than the 1/r behavior of Luther and Peschel, and that this might be attributed to a logarithmic factor, i.e., C(r)\ensuremath{\sim}(A/r)(lnr/${r}_{0}$${)}^{\ensuremath{\sigma}}$, with \ensuremath{\sigma}\ensuremath{\approxeq}0.2 to 0.3.

Dynamical correlations of S=1/2 quantum spin chains

Rodrigo G. Pereira

Spin-1/2 chains demonstrate some of the striking effects of interactions and quantum fluctuations in one-dimensional systems. The XXZ model has been used to study the unusual properties of anisotropic spin chains in an external magnetic field. The zero temperature phase diagram for this model exhibits a critical or quasi-long-range-ordered phase which is a realization of a Luttinger liquid. While many static properties of spin-1/2 chains have been explained by combinations of analytical techniques such as bosonization and Bethe ansatz, the standard approach fails in the calculation of some time-dependent correlation functions. I present a study of the longitudinal dynamical structure factor for the XXZ model in the critical regime. I show that an approximation for the line shape of the dynamical structure factor in the limit of small momentum transfer can be obtained by going beyond the Luttinger model and treating irrelevant operators associated with band curvature effects. This approach is able to describe the width of the on-shell peak and the high-frequency tail at finite magnetic field. Integrability is shown to affect the low-energy effective model at zero field, with consequences for the line shape. The power-law singularities at the thresholds of the particle-hole continuum are investigated using an analogy with the X-ray edge problem. Using methods of Bethe ansatz and conformal field theory, I compute the exact exponents for the edge singularities of the dynamical structure factor. The same methods are used to study the long-time asymptotic behavior of the spin self-correlation function, which is shown to be dominated by a high-energy excitation.

Correlations of zero-entropy critical states in the XXZ model: integrability and Luttinger theory far from the ground state

Rogier Vlijm, Sebas Eliëns, Jean-Sébastien Caux

Pumping a finite energy density into a quantum system typically leads to ‘melted’ states characterized by exponentially-decaying correlations, as is the case for finite-temperature equilibrium situations. An important exception to this rule are states which, while being at high energy, maintain a low entropy. Such states can interestingly still display features of quantum criticality, especially in one dimension. Here, we consider high-energy states in anisotropic Heisenberg quantum spin chains obtained by splitting the ground state’s magnon Fermi sea into separate pieces. Using methods based on integrability, we provide a detailed study of static and dynamical spin-spin correlations. These carry distinctive signatures of the Fermi sea splittings, which would be observable in eventual experimental realizations. Going further, we employ a multi-component Tomonaga-Luttinger model in order to predict the asymptotics of static correlations. For this effective field theory, we fix all universal exponents from energetics, and all non-universal correlation prefactors using finite-size scaling of matrix elements. The correlations obtained directly from integrability and those emerging from the Luttinger field theory description are shown to be in extremely good correspondence, as expected, for the large distance asymptotics, but surprisingly also for the short distance behavior. Finally, we discuss the description of dynamical correlations from a mobile impurity model, and clarify the relation of the effective field theory parameters to the Bethe Ansatz solution.
