Abstract

Twisted transition metal dichalcogenides offer an exceptionally tunable moiré platform for studying correlation physics beyond conventional condensed matter systems. In particular, the intriguing interplay between the displacement field and the twist angle remains to be fully resolved. In this paper, we use large-scale density matrix renormalization group simulations to study the minimal moiré Hubbard model on a triangular lattice at half-filling, where the displacement field effect is captured by a spin-dependent staggered flux. We find that the displacement field significantly enriches the triangular Hubbard phase diagram in several qualitative ways. It rapidly destabilizes the chiral spin liquid phase beyond a narrow weak-field regime, induces pronounced chiral correlations in the strong-coupling $120^\circ$-antiferromagnetic phase, and stabilizes incommensurate spin-density wave phases at weaker coupling. We further find signatures of a continuous transition between the chiral spin liquid and chiral antiferromagnetic phases at a finite displacement field, potentially driven by spinon condensation. Our results uncover rich displacement-field-driven many-body physics and provide useful guidance for future experiments in moiré superlattice systems.

Magnetic field induced partially polarized chiral spin liquid in a transition metal dichalcogenide moiré system

Yixuan Huang, D. N. Sheng, Jian‐Xin Zhu

As one of the most intriguing states of matter, the chiral spin liquid (CSL) has attracted much scientific interest while its existence and mechanism in crystalline strongly correlated systems remain hotly debated. On the other hand, strong correlation driven emergent phenomena can be realized in twisted transition metal dichalcogenide bilayers with a tremendously tunable large length scale providing a new platform for the emergence of CSLs. We focus on a strongly correlated model relevant to heterobilayer ${\text{WSe}}_{2}/{\text{MoSe}}_{2}$ and investigate the Mott insulating phase at half filling under an out-of-plane magnetic field. Considering both its orbital and spin Zeeman effects we identify three conventionally ordered phases including a ${120}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$ N\'eel phase, a stripe phase, and an up-up-down phase. For intermediate fields an emergent quantum spin liquid phase is identified with partial spin polarization. We further characterize its topological nature as the $\ensuremath{\nu}=1/2$ Laughlin CSL through the topological entanglement spectrum and quantized spin pumping under spin flux insertion. In addition, we map out the quantum phase diagram for different twisted angles in an experimentally accessible parameter regime.

Quantum Phases of Transition Metal Dichalcogenide Moiré Systems

Yiqing Zhou, D. N. Sheng, Eun-Ah Kim

Moiré systems provide a rich platform for studies of strong correlation physics. Recent experiments on heterobilayer transition metal dichalcogenide Moiré systems are exciting in that they manifest a relatively simple model system of an extended Hubbard model on a triangular lattice. Inspired by the prospect of the hetero-transition metal dichalcogenide Moiré system's potential as a solid-state-based quantum simulator, we explore the extended Hubbard model on the triangular lattice using the density matrix renormalization group. Specifically, we explore the two-dimensional phase space spanned by the key tuning parameters in the extended Hubbard model, namely, the kinetic energy strength and the further-range Coulomb interaction strengths. We find competition between Fermi fluid, chiral spin liquid, spin density wave, and charge order. In particular, our finding of the optimal further-range interaction for the chiral correlation presents a tantalizing possibility.

Chiral spin liquid versus Mott antiferromagnetism in the triangular-lattice Hubbard model

Zheng Zhu

Quantum spin liquids emerging near the metal-insulator transition have been a longstanding issue in physics. Here, the author identifies a chiral spin liquid in the half-filled triangular-lattice Hubbard model using state-of-the-art non-Abelian density matrix renormalization. By computing the spin chirality order parameter with unprecedented system sizes and high accuracy, the findings extrapolate toward the two-dimensional limit, impacting theoretical research and experimental realizations in ultracold-atom optical lattices and transition-metal dichalcogenide moir\'e materials.

Spin liquid in twisted homobilayers of group-VI dichalcogenides

Mohammad-Hossein Zare, Hamid Mosadeq

Twisted transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) homobilayers have recently emerged as a powerful platform for studying correlated insulating states. In the strongly correlated limit, we construct an effective spin Hamiltonian on a honeycomb lattice that includes the Heisenberg interaction and nonsymmetric interactions such as a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and a Kane-Mele coupling for the Mott-insulating phase at half-filling. For the twisted TMD homobilayers, the spin-orbit coupling in the Hubbard model, which is expected to induce the antisymmetric exchange couplings in the effective spin Hamiltonian, is a highly tunable and experimentally accessible quantity that can be tuned by an applied electric field. In this study, we investigate classical and quantum phase diagrams of the effective spin Hamiltonian using analytical and numerical methods. We show that the model exhibits a rich classical phase diagram including an antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase, a planar spiral ordered phase with high classical degeneracy, a $z$-AFM phase, a noncoplanar phase, a noncollinear phase, and a ${120}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$-AFM phase. In the quantum treatment, we calculate low-energy magnon excitation spectrum, ground-state energy, and static spin structure factor using linear spin-wave theory and density matrix renormalization group methods to compose the quantum phase diagram of the effective spin Hamiltonian. Beyond the Heisenberg interaction, we find that the existence of these antisymmetric couplings is responsible for the quantum spin liquid, $z$-AFM, noncoplanar, and ${120}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$ phases. Twisted TMD homobilayers, therefore, offer rich platforms for realizing rich phases of matter such as quantum spin liquid, noncoplanar, and ${120}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$, resulting from the spin-orbit coupling.

Singlet, triplet, and pair density wave superconductivity in the doped triangular-lattice moiré system

Feng Chen, D. N. Sheng

Recent experimental progress has established the twisted bilayer transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) as a highly tunable platform for studying many-body physics. Particularly, the homobilayer TMDs under displacement field are believed to be described by a generalized triangular-lattice Hubbard model with a spin-dependent hopping phase $\ensuremath{\theta}$. To explore the effects of $\ensuremath{\theta}$ on the system, we perform density matrix renormalization group calculations for the relevant triangular lattice t-J model. By changing $\ensuremath{\theta}$ at small hole doping, we obtain a region of quasi-long-range superconducting order coexisting with charge and spin density wave within $0<\ensuremath{\theta}<\ensuremath{\pi}/3$. The superconductivity is composed of a dominant spin singlet $d$-wave and a subdominant triplet $p$-wave pairing. Intriguingly, the ${S}_{z}=\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1$ triplet pairing components feature pair-density waves. In addition, we find a region of triplet superconductivity coexisting with charge-density wave and ferromagnetism within $\ensuremath{\pi}/3<\ensuremath{\theta}<2\ensuremath{\pi}/3$, which is related to the former phase at smaller $\ensuremath{\theta}$ by a combined operation of spin-flip and gauge transformation. Our findings provide insights and directions for experimental search for exotic superconductivity in twisted TMD systems.

Kagome chiral spin liquid in transition metal dichalcogenide moiré bilayers

Johannes Motruk, Dario Rossi, Dmitry A. Abanin +1 more

At $n=3/4$ filling of the moiré flat band, transition metal dichalcogenide moiré bilayers will develop kagome charge order. We derive an effective spin model for the resulting localized spins and find that its further neighbor spin interactions can be much less suppressed than the corresponding electron hopping strength. Using density matrix renormalization group simulations, we study its phase diagram and, for realistic model parameters relevant for WSe$_2$/WS$_2$, we show that this material can realize the exotic chiral spin liquid phase and the highly debated kagome spin liquid. Our work thus demonstrates that the frustration and strong interactions present in TMD heterobilayers provide an exciting platform to study spin liquid physics.
