Abstract

We prove that an absolutely maximally entangled state of seven qudits exists if and only if the local dimension satisfies $d\geq 3$. Prior to this work, to the best of our knowledge, $\text{AME}(7,d)$ states were known to exist only when $d$ is a prime power other than $2$, or when $d$ can be expressed as a product of dimensions for which existence was already known. Since it has been proved that no $\text{AME}(7,2)$ state exists, it remains to establish existence for all $d\geq 3$. We construct cyclic quadratic-phase states for every odd local dimension and develop a coupled binary--odd-dimensional construction for every dimension congruent to $2$ modulo $4$. Together with the known power-of-two cases and the product property of AME states, these constructions cover every local dimension $d\geq 3$.

AI Summary

The paper addresses the existence of seven-party absolutely maximally entangled states, $\mathrm{AME}(7,d)$, whose reductions to any three parties are maximally mixed. It proves that such states exist exactly when $d\geq3$, under the usual convention excluding $d=1$. This completes the classification using the previously established nonexistence at $d=2$, and supplies explicit constructions for previously unresolved dimensions, including $d=6$ and $d=10$. For every odd dimension $q\geq3$, a quadratic-phase graph state is constructed from the complement of the seven-cycle. Maximal mixing follows from invertible cross-cut minors: cyclic symmetry reduces the 35 three-party cuts to five representatives, with selected determinants $-1,1,2,-1,1$, all invertible modulo odd $q$. For $d=2q$ with odd $q\geq3$, the construction coherently couples the two logical states of the seven-qubit Steane code to locally phase-shifted versions of the odd-dimensional graph state. Off-diagonal reduced blocks vanish in the binary sector on 28 cuts. On the remaining seven Fano-plane cuts, explicit left-null-vector certificates establish vanishing in the odd-dimensional sector. The diagonal blocks combine to give $I_{d^3}/d^3$ on every cut. Known power-of-two constructions and the tensor-product property then cover all remaining dimensions. The classification is specific to seven parties. Together with existing results, it completes the existence classification through seven parties; the paper identifies $\mathrm{AME}(8,4)$ as the first remaining open case and leaves classification for larger party numbers unresolved.

On Non-Existence of Absolutely Maximally Entangled Canonical Graph States in Even Local Dimensions

Jakub Wójcik, Owidiusz Makuta, Wojciech Bruzda +1 more

We demonstrate that absolutely maximally entangled (AME) states consisting of $N=4n$ qudits with $n\in\{1,2,3,\ldots\}$, each of even local dimension $d$, cannot be realized as canonical graph states over the ring $\mathbb{Z}_d$. This result imposes strong constraints on AME states in composite local dimensions and characterizes the limitations of graph-state constructions for highly entangled multipartite quantum systems. Furthermore, for $d\equiv 2\pmod 4$ this obstruction, combined with the prime-power decomposition of stabilizer states, excludes all pure stabilizer AME states (including four quhexes), while clarifying the distinction between canonical $\mathbb{Z}_{d}$ graph states and stabilizer constructions over prime-power factors. We also discuss a composite construction of mixed $k$-uniform states. For $(N,d)=(4,6)$, the construction yields a rank-two mixed $2$-uniform stabilizer state of purity $1/2$, which is optimal among normalized stabilizer projectors.

On the Existence of Absolutely Maximally Entangled States of Minimal Support II

Antonio Bernal Serrano

Absolutely maximally entangled, AME, states are pure multipartite states that give rise to the maximally mixed states when half or more of the parties are traced out. AME states find applications in fields like teleportation or quantum secret sharing, and the problem of finding conditions on their existence has been considered in a number of papers. We consider here AME states of minimal support, that are simpler to analyse. An equivalence with coding theory gives a sufficient condition for their existence, that the number of sites be equal to the local dimension plus one, when the local dimension $d$ is a power of a prime number. In this paper, an equivalence with latin hypercubes is used to prove that the above sufficient condition fails in the first case in which the local dimension is not a prime power, $d=6$. Results for other values of $d$ are also given.

Non-existence of stabilizer absolutely maximally entangled states across infinitely many configurations

Hyunho Cha

We prove a general reduction theorem for stabilizer absolutely maximally entangled states in composite local dimension. If a stabilizer $\mathrm{AME}(n,D)$ state exists and $D=\prod_{i=1}^m q_i$ is the prime-power factorization of $D$, then for every nonempty subset of factors there exists a stabilizer $\mathrm{AME}\bigl(n,\prod_{i\in M} q_i\bigr)$ state. Thus any obstruction at a prime-power factor immediately obstructs stabilizer AME states in the composite dimension.

Constructing absolute maximally entangled states and optimal quantum error correcting codes

Zahra Raissi, Christian Gogolin, Arnau Riera +1 more

Absolutely maximally entangled (AME) states are pure multi-partite generalizations of the bipartite maximally entangled states with the property that all reduced states of at most half the system size are in the maximally mixed state. AME states are of interest for multipartite teleportation and quantum secret sharing and have recently found new applications in the context of high-energy physics in toy models realizing the AdS/CFT-correspondence. We work out in detail the connection between AME states of minimal support and classical maximum distance separable (MDS) error correcting codes and, in particular, provide explicit closed form expressions for AME states of $n$ parties with local dimension $q$ a power of a prime for all $q \geq n-1$. Building on this, we construct a generalization of the Bell-basis consisting of AME states and develop a stabilizer formalism for AME states. For every $q \geq n-1$ prime we show how to construct QECCs that encode a logical qudit into a subspace spanned by AME states. Under a conjecture for which we provide numerical evidence, this construction produces a family of quantum error correcting codes $[\![n,1,n/2]\!]_q$ for $n$ even, saturating the quantum Singleton bound. We show that our conjecture is equivalent to the existence of an operator whose support cannot be decreased by multiplying it with stabilizer products and explicitly construct the codes up to $n = 8$.

Absolutely maximally entangled state equivalence and the construction of infinite quantum solutions to the problem of 36 officers of Euler

Suhail Ahmad Rather, N. Ramadas, Vijay Kodiyalam +1 more

Ordering and classifying multipartite quantum states by their entanglement content remains an open problem. One class of highly entangled states, useful in quantum information protocols, the absolutely maximally entangled (AME) ones, are especially hard to compare as all their subsystems are maximally random. While it is well known that there is no AME state of four qubits, many analytical examples and numerically generated ensembles of four-qutrit AME states are known. However, we prove the surprising result that there is truly only one AME state of four qutrits up to local unitary equivalence. In contrast, for larger local dimensions, the number of local unitary classes of AME states is shown to be infinite. Of special interest is the case of local dimension 6, where it was established recently that a four-party AME state does exist, providing a quantum solution to the classically impossible Euler problem of 36 officers. Based on this, an infinity of quantum solutions are constructed, and we prove that these are not equivalent. The methods developed can be usefully generalized to multipartite states of any number of particles.

Absolutely Maximally Entangled States of $2q$ Parties in Every Odd Prime-Power Dimension $q$

Mykhailo Hontarenko, Karol Życzkowski

Absolutely maximally entangled (AME) states represent an extreme form of multipartite entanglement: every reduced system containing at most half of the parties is maximally mixed. These states provide perfect tensors and optimal quantum error-correcting codes, yet their existence is known only in restricted parameter regimes. For every odd prime power $q=p^e\ge3$, we construct a stabilizer $\mathrm{AME}(2q,q)$ state whose normalized one-party projection yields a stabilizer $\mathrm{AME}(2q-1,q)$ state. A closed-form $q\times q$ bordered-circulant matrix $A_q$ over $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$ generates a Hermitian self-dual maximum distance separable (MDS) code $[2q,q,q+1]_{q^2}$, which lies outside the extended Reed-Solomon classes. In suitable bases, the amplitude tensors define normalized $q$-unitary complex Hadamard matrices of order $q^q$ with $p$th-root phases. Additional constructions yield $\mathrm{AME}(q+3,q)$ states and families at intermediate particle numbers through explicit rescalings of selected submatrices. We also provide nine explicit parent matrices and the corresponding one-party projections.

We prove that an absolutely maximally entangled state of seven qudits exists if and only if the local dimension satisfies d≥3d\geq 3d≥3. Prior to this work, to the best of our knowledge, AME(7,d)\text{AME}(7,d)AME(7,d) states were known to exist only when ddd is a prime power other than 222, or when ddd can be expressed as a product of dimensions for which existence was already known. Since it has been proved that no AME(7,2)\text{AME}(7,2)AME(7,2) state exists, it remains to establish existence for all d≥3d\geq 3d≥3. We construct cyclic quadratic-phase states for every odd local dimension and develop a coupled binary--odd-dimensional construction for every dimension congruent to 222 modulo 444. Together with the known power-of-two cases and the product property of AME states, these constructions cover every local dimension d≥3d\geq 3d≥3.
The paper addresses the existence of seven-party absolutely maximally entangled states, AME(7,d)\mathrm{AME}(7,d)AME(7,d), whose reductions to any three parties are maximally mixed. It proves that such states exist exactly when d≥3d\geq3d≥3, under the usual convention excluding d=1d=1d=1. This completes the classification using the previously established nonexistence at d=2d=2d=2, and supplies explicit constructions for previously unresolved dimensions, including d=6d=6d=6 and d=10d=10d=10.
For every odd dimension q≥3q\geq3q≥3, a quadratic-phase graph state is constructed from the complement of the seven-cycle. Maximal mixing follows from invertible cross-cut minors: cyclic symmetry reduces the 35 three-party cuts to five representatives, with selected determinants −1,1,2,−1,1-1,1,2,-1,1−1,1,2,−1,1, all invertible modulo odd qqq.
For d=2qd=2qd=2q with odd q≥3q\geq3q≥3, the construction coherently couples the two logical states of the seven-qubit Steane code to locally phase-shifted versions of the odd-dimensional graph state. Off-diagonal reduced blocks vanish in the binary sector on 28 cuts. On the remaining seven Fano-plane cuts, explicit left-null-vector certificates establish vanishing in the odd-dimensional sector. The diagonal blocks combine to give Id3/d3I_{d^3}/d^3Id3/d3 on every cut. Known power-of-two constructions and the tensor-product property then cover all remaining dimensions.
The classification is specific to seven parties. Together with existing results, it completes the existence classification through seven parties; the paper identifies AME(8,4)\mathrm{AME}(8,4)AME(8,4) as the first remaining open case and leaves classification for larger party numbers unresolved.

This result imposes strong constraints on AME states in composite local dimensions and characterizes the limitations of graph-state constructions for highly entangled multipartite quantum systems. We also discuss a composite construction of mixed kkk-uniform states. For (N,d)=(4,6)(N,d)=(4,6)(N,d)=(4,6), the construction yields a rank-two mixed 222-uniform stabilizer state of purity 1/21/21/2, which is optimal among normalized stabilizer projectors.
