Abstract

We investigate ultrasound attenuation and sound velocity shift in antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 XXZ chains in magnetic field. We relate the sound velocity shift to derivatives of the free energy with respect to exchange interactions, permitting its calculation with integrability techniques at any temperature. Using bosonization, we predict the sound velocity shift exhibits a quadratic temperature correction at low temperatures in the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid phase. Close to the fully polarized phase, a universal behavior associated with z=2 quantum criticality is found. In the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid phase, ultrasound attenuation obeys a scaling law as a function of wavelength and temperature. An enhancement of attenuation is obtained near the fully polarized phase.

Quantum criticality of spinons

Feng He, Yuzhu Jiang, Yi-Cong Yu +2 more

Magnon bound states emerging in one-dimensional (1D) spin chains still lack a rigorous understanding. In this Rapid Communication we show that the length-1 spin strings significantly dominate the critical properties of spinons, magnons, and free fermions in the 1D antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 chain. Using the Bethe ansatz solution, we analytically calculate the scaling functions of the thermal and magnetic properties of the model, providing a rigorous understanding of the quantum criticality of spinons. It turns out that the double maxima in specific heat elegantly mark two crossover temperatures fanning out from the critical point, indicating three quantum phases: the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL), the quantum critical, and fully polarized ferromagnetic phases. For the TLL phase, the Wilson ratio ${R}_{W}=4{K}_{s}$ remains almost temperature independent, where ${K}_{s}$ is the Luttinger parameter. Furthermore, by applying our results, we precisely determine the quantum scalings and critical exponents of all magnetic properties in the ideal 1D spin-1/2 antiferromagnet $\mathrm{Cu}(\mathrm{C}{}_{4}\mathrm{H}{}_{4}\mathrm{N}{}_{2})(\mathrm{NO}{}_{3}){}_{2}$, recently studied by Kono et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 114, 037202 (2015)]. We further find that the magnetization maximum used in experiments is not a good quantity to map out the finite-temperature TLL phase boundary.

Phase diagram and quantum criticality of Heisenberg spin chains with Ising anisotropic interchain couplings

Yuchen Fan, Jiahao Yang, Weiqiang Yu +2 more

The authors find that the interchain Ising anisotropy of coupled spin-1/2 Heisenberg chains enhances longitudinal spin correlations and stabilizes an incommensurate antiferromagnetic order under a longitudinal magnetic field. The system shows a dimensional crossover in the quantum critical regime and exhibits Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid behavior over a broad field and temperature regime.

Dynamical correlations of S=1/2 quantum spin chains

Rodrigo G. Pereira

Spin-1/2 chains demonstrate some of the striking effects of interactions and quantum fluctuations in one-dimensional systems. The XXZ model has been used to study the unusual properties of anisotropic spin chains in an external magnetic field. The zero temperature phase diagram for this model exhibits a critical or quasi-long-range-ordered phase which is a realization of a Luttinger liquid. While many static properties of spin-1/2 chains have been explained by combinations of analytical techniques such as bosonization and Bethe ansatz, the standard approach fails in the calculation of some time-dependent correlation functions. I present a study of the longitudinal dynamical structure factor for the XXZ model in the critical regime. I show that an approximation for the line shape of the dynamical structure factor in the limit of small momentum transfer can be obtained by going beyond the Luttinger model and treating irrelevant operators associated with band curvature effects. This approach is able to describe the width of the on-shell peak and the high-frequency tail at finite magnetic field. Integrability is shown to affect the low-energy effective model at zero field, with consequences for the line shape. The power-law singularities at the thresholds of the particle-hole continuum are investigated using an analogy with the X-ray edge problem. Using methods of Bethe ansatz and conformal field theory, I compute the exact exponents for the edge singularities of the dynamical structure factor. The same methods are used to study the long-time asymptotic behavior of the spin self-correlation function, which is shown to be dominated by a high-energy excitation.

Tomonaga–Luttinger liquid and quantum criticality in spin-12 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain C14H18CuN4O10 via Wilson ratio

Sharath Kumar Channarayappa, Sankalp Kumar, N. S. Vidhyadhiraja +9 more

Abstract The ground state of a one-dimensional spin-12 uniform antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain (AfHc) is a Tomonaga–Luttinger liquid which is quantum-critical with respect to applied magnetic fields up to a saturation field μ0Hs beyond which it transforms to a fully polarized state. Wilson ratio has been predicted to be a good indicator for demarcating these phases [Phys. Rev. B 96, 220401 (2017)]. From detailed temperature and magnetic field-dependent magnetization, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements in a metalorganic complex and comparisons with field theory and quantum transfer matrix method calculations, the complex was found to be a very good realization of a spin-12 AfHc. Wilson ratio obtained from experimentally obtained magnetic susceptibility and magnetic contribution of specific heat values was used to map the magnetic phase diagram of the uniform spin-12 AfHc over large regions of phase space demarcating Tomonaga–Luttinger liquid, saturation field quantum critical, and fully polarized states. Luttinger parameter and spinon velocity were found to match very well with the values predicted from conformal field theory.

Scaling in the massive antiferromagnetic XXZ spin-1/2 chain near the isotropic point

S. B. Rutkevich

The scaling limit of the Heisenberg XXZ spin chain at zero magnetic field is studied in the gapped antiferromagnetic phase. For a spin-chain ring having N_{x} sites, the universal Casimir scaling function, which characterizes the leading finite-size correction term in the large-N_{x} expansion of the ground-state energy, is calculated by numerical solution of the nonlinear integral equation of the convolution type. It is shown that the same scaling function describes the temperature dependence of the free energy of the infinite XXZ chain at low enough temperatures in the gapped scaling regime.

Tomonaga-Luttinger Liquid Behavior in a Rydberg-Encoded Spin Chain

Gabriel Emperauger, Mu Qiao, Cheng Chen +14 more

Quantum fluctuations can disrupt long-range order in one-dimensional systems and replace it with the universal paradigm of the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL), a critical phase of matter characterized by power-law decaying correlations and linearly dispersing excitations. Using a Rydberg quantum simulator, we study how TLL physics manifests in the low-energy properties of a spin chain, interacting under either the ferromagnetic or the antiferromagnetic dipolar XY Hamiltonian. Following quasiadiabatic preparation, we directly observe the power-law decay of spin-spin correlations in real space, allowing us to extract the Luttinger parameter. In the presence of an impurity, the chain exhibits tunable Friedel oscillations of the local magnetization. Moreover, by utilizing a quantum quench, we directly probe the propagation of correlations, which exhibit a light-cone structure related to the linear sound mode of the underlying TLL. Our measurements demonstrate the influence of the long-range dipolar interactions, renormalizing the parameters of TLL with respect to the case of nearest-neighbor interactions. Finally, comparison to numerical simulations exposes the high sensitivity of TLLs to doping and finite-size effects.
