The boundary-driven multispecies harmonic process

Abstract

We introduce the multispecies version of the harmonic process on a one-dimensional chain in contact with boundary reservoirs. This process is a continuous-time Markov chain where each site can host an unbounded number of colored particles. The symmetric bulk dynamics is put in contact with reservoirs, which inject and remove particles driving the system out-of-equilibrium. The Markov generator of the process is identified with the integrable Hamiltonian of an open rational Heisenberg spin chain of higher rank. We derive the underlying R- and K-matrices in operator form and construct the double-row transfer matrix following Sklyanin. Similar to the monospecies case the R-matrix factorises into two R-operators, each factor corresponding to left and right moving particles. We further define three dual models: an absorbing particle model, a hidden parameter model and a heat conduction model.

Duality for the multispecies stirring process with open boundaries

Francesco Casini, Rouven Frassek, Cristian Giardinà

Abstract We study the stirring process with N − 1 species on a generic graph G = ( V , E ) with reservoirs. The multispecies stirring process generalizes the symmetric exclusion process, which is recovered in the case N = 2. We prove the existence of a dual process defined on an extended graph G ~ = ( V ~ , E ~ ) which includes additional sites in V ~ ∖ V where dual particles get absorbed in the long-time limit. We thus obtain a characterization of the non-equilibrium steady state of the boundary-driven system in terms of the absorption probabilities of dual particles. The process is integrable for the case of the one-dimensional chain with two reservoirs at the boundaries and with maximally one particle per site. We compute the absorption probabilities by relying on the underlying g l ( N ) symmetry and the matrix product ansatz. Thus one gets a closed-formula for (long-ranged) correlations and for the non-equilibrium stationary measure. Extensions beyond this integrable set-up are also discussed.

Exact solution of an integrable non-equilibrium particle system

Rouven Frassek, Cristian Giardinà

We consider the integrable family of symmetric boundary-driven interacting particle systems that arise from the non-compact XXX Heisenberg model in one dimension with open boundaries. In contrast to the well-known symmetric exclusion process, the number of particles at each site is unbounded. We show that a finite chain of N sites connected at its ends to two reservoirs can be solved exactly, i.e., the factorial moments of the non-equilibrium steady-state can be written in the closed form for each N. The solution relies on probabilistic arguments and techniques inspired by integrable systems. It is obtained in two steps: (i) the introduction of a dual absorbing process reducing the problem to a finite number of particles and (ii) the solution of the dual dynamics exploiting a symmetry obtained from the quantum inverse scattering method. Long-range correlations are computed in the finite-volume system. The exact solution allows us to prove by a direct computation that, in the thermodynamic limit, the system approaches local equilibrium. A by-product of the solution is the algebraic construction of a direct mapping between the non-equilibrium steady state and the equilibrium reversible measure.

Exterior integrability: Yang–Baxter form of non-equilibrium steady-state density operator

Tomaž Prosen, Enej Ilievski, Vladislav Popkov

A new type of quantum transfer matrix, arising as a Cholesky factor for the steady-state density matrix of a dissipative Markovian process associated with the boundary-driven Lindblad equation for the isotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg ( XXX ) chain, is presented. The transfer matrix forms a commuting family of non-Hermitian operators depending on the spectral parameter, which is essentially the strength of dissipative coupling at the boundaries. The intertwining of the corresponding Lax and monodromy matrices is performed by an infinitely dimensional Yang–Baxter R -matrix, which we construct explicitly and is essentially different from the standard 4 × 4 XXX R -matrix. We also discuss a possibility to construct Bethe ansatz for the spectrum and eigenstates of the non-equilibrium steady-state density operator. Furthermore, we indicate the existence of a deformed R -matrix in the infinite dimensional auxiliary space for the anisotropic XXZ spin-1/2 chain, which in general provides a sequence of new, possibly quasi-local, conserved quantities of the bulk XXZ dynamics.

Matrix product solutions of boundary driven quantum chains

Tomaž Prosen

We review recent progress on constructing non-equilibrium steady state density operators of boundary driven locally interacting quantum chains, where driving is implemented via Markovian dissipation channels attached to the chain's ends. We discuss explicit solutions in three different classes of quantum chains, specifically, the paradigmatic (anisotropic) Heisenberg spin- chain, the Fermi–Hubbard chain, and the Lai–Sutherland spin-1 chain, and discuss universal concepts which characterize these solutions, such as matrix product ansatz and a more structured walking graph state ansatz. The central theme is the connection between the matrix product form of nonequilibrium states and the integrability structures of the bulk Hamiltonian, such as the Lax operators and the Yang–Baxter equation. However, there is a remarkable distinction with respect to the conventional quantum inverse scattering method, namely addressing nonequilibrium steady state density operators requires non-unitary irreducible representations of Yang–Baxter algebra which are typically of infinite dimensionality. Such constructions result in non-Hermitian, and often also non-diagonalisable families of commuting transfer operators which in turn result in novel conservation laws of the integrable bulk Hamiltonians. For example, in the case of the anisotropic Heisenberg model, quasi-local conserved operators which are odd under spin reversal (or spin flip) can be constructed, whereas the conserved operators stemming from orthodox Hermitian transfer operators (via logarithmic differentiation) are all even under spin reversal.

Integrable dissipative exclusion process: Correlation functions and physical properties

Nicolas Crampé, E. Ragoucy, V. Rittenberg +1 more

We study a one-parameter generalization of the symmetric simple exclusion process on a one-dimensional lattice. In addition to the usual dynamics (where particles can hop with equal rates to the left or to the right with an exclusion constraint), annihilation and creation of pairs can occur. The system is driven out of equilibrium by two reservoirs at the boundaries. In this setting the model is still integrable: it is related to the open XXZ spin chain through a gauge transformation. This allows us to compute the full spectrum of the Markov matrix using Bethe equations. We also show that the stationary state can be expressed in a matrix product form permitting to compute the multipoints correlation functions as well as the mean value of the lattice and the creation-annihilation currents. Finally, the variance of the lattice current is computed for a finite-size system. In the thermodynamic limit, it matches the value obtained from the associated macroscopic fluctuation theory.
