Superfluidity without charge order in the attractive Hubbard model on the kagome lattice

Abstract

Using auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we study the zero-temperature attractive Hubbard model on the kagome lattice at various relevant electronic fillings. The low-energy physics at $2/3$-density is influenced by the Dirac point at the Fermi energy, wherein we unveil a superfluid transition at a critical attractive interaction $U_c/t=-4.58(3)$, which belongs to the chiral-XY universality class. This U(1) symmetry-breaking is not accompanied by charge order, even for substantially large interaction strengths, in a regime where a description in terms of hardcore bosons becomes increasingly suitable. An investigation of the latter shows that charge ordering at $1/3$-filling only occurs at interaction strengths much larger than those corresponding to the mapping to the original fermionic model. Additionally, for densities exhibiting van Hove singularities in the non-interacting density of states, our results show that any attractive interaction gives rise to superfluidity, yet again without charge ordering, contrary to recent studies employing mean-field theory.

Attractive Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice: Quantum Monte Carlo study

Kean Loon Lee, Karim Bouadim, G. G. Batrouni +4 more

We study the attractive fermionic Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice using determinantal quantum Monte Carlo simulations. By increasing the interaction strength $U$ (relative to the hopping parameter $t$) at half filling and zero temperature, the system undergoes a quantum phase transition at $5.0<{U}_{c}/t<5.1$ from a semimetal to a phase displaying simultaneously superfluid behavior and density order. Doping away from half filling, and increasing the interaction strength at finite but low temperature $T$, the system always appears to be a superfluid exhibiting a crossover between a BCS and a molecular regime. These different regimes are analyzed by studying the spectral function. The formation of pairs and the emergence of phase coherence throughout the sample are studied as $U$ is increased and $T$ is lowered.

Fermionic superfluid transition and pairing scale separation in the kagome flat band

Xiang Li, Yu Wang

Flat-band systems provide a promising platform for exploring exotic correlated phases owing to quenched kinetic energy and enhanced interaction effects. In this work, we investigate the flat-band superfluid transition in the attractive kagome Hubbard model using large-scale determinant quantum Monte Carlo simulations accelerated by fast Fourier transforms and delay updates. Through systematic calculations of the transition temperature, spin susceptibility, and density compressibility, we establish the finite-temperature phase diagram at the flat-band filling $ρ=5/3$ and find a clear linear scaling of the superfluid transition temperature with the interaction strength, $T_{\mathrm{c}}=0.0314|U|$. Our results reveal a wide separation of temperature scales between local pair formation and global phase coherence, which stabilizes a broad intermediate supercompressible bosonic fluid region of preformed pairs that bridges the normal Fermi gas and the flat-band superfluid. We further demonstrate that both the transition temperature and density compressibility are significantly enhanced in the flat band compared to van Hove fillings. Our findings highlight the essential role of flat-band-enhanced pair-density fluctuations in separating the pairing and phase-coherence scales, offering clear experimental signatures for probing flat-band superfluidity and superconductivity in cold-atom and kagome-material platforms.

Chiral Edge States and Fractional Charge Separation in a System of Interacting Bosons on a Kagome Lattice

Xue‐Feng Zhang, Sebastian Eggert

We consider the extended hard-core Bose-Hubbard model on a kagome lattice with boundary conditions on two edges. We find that the sharp edges lift the degeneracy and freeze the system into a striped order at 1/3 and 2/3 filling for zero hopping. At small hopping strengths, holes spontaneously appear and separate into fractional charges which move to the edges of the system. This leads to a novel edge liquid phase, which is characterized by fractional charges near the edges and a finite edge compressibility but no superfluid density. The compressibility is due to excitations on the edge which display a chiral symmetry breaking that is reminiscent of the quantum Hall effect and topological insulators. Large scale Monte Carlo simulations confirm the analytical considerations.

Bose-Hubbard model on a star lattice

Sergei V. Isakov, K. Sengupta, Yong Baek Kim

We analyze the Bose-Hubbard model of hardcore bosons with nearest-neighbor hopping and repulsive interactions on a star lattice using both quantum Monte Carlo simulation and dual vortex theory. We obtain the phase diagram of this model as a function of the chemical potential and the relative strength of hopping and interaction. In the strong-interaction regime, we find that the Mott phases of the model at 1/2 and 1/3 fillings, in contrast to their counterparts on square, triangular, and kagome lattices, are either translationally invariant resonant valence bond (RVB) phases with no density-wave order or have coexisting density-wave and RVB orders. We also find that upon increasing the relative strength of hopping and interaction, the translationally invariant Mott states undergo direct second-order superfluid-insulator quantum phase transitions. We compute the critical exponents for these transitions and argue using the dual vortex picture that the transitions, when approached through the tip of the Mott lobe, belong to the inverted XY universality class.

Superconductivity and charge order of confined Fermi systems

Elias Assmann, Simone Chiesa, G. G. Batrouni +2 more

The low-temperature properties of the two-dimensional attractive Hubbard model are strongly influenced by the fermion density. Away from half-filling, there is a finite-temperature transition to a phase with $s$-wave pairing order. However, ${T}_{\mathrm{c}}$ is suppressed to zero at half-filling, where long-range charge-density-wave order also appears, degenerate with superconductivity. This paper presents determinant quantum Monte Carlo simulations of the attractive Hubbard model in the presence of a confining potential ${V}_{\mathrm{trap}}$ which makes the fermion density $\ensuremath{\rho}$ inhomogeneous across the lattice. Pair correlations are shown to be large at low temperatures in regions of the trapped system with incommensurate filling, and to exhibit a minimum as the local density $\ensuremath{\rho}(\mathbit{i})$ passes through one fermion per site. In this ring of $\ensuremath{\rho}(\mathbit{i})=1$, charge order is enhanced. A comparison is made between treating ${V}_{\mathrm{trap}}$ within the local-density approximation (LDA) and in an ab initio manner. It is argued that certain sharp features of the LDA result at integer filling do not survive the proximity of doped sites. The critical temperature of confined systems of fixed characteristic density is estimated.

Quantum Monte Carlo simulations of the attractive SU(3) Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice

Xu Han, Zhichao Zhou, Xin Wang +2 more

We perform the projector quantum Monte Carlo simulation of the half-filled attractive SU(3) Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice, exploring the effects of SU(3) symmetry on the correlated attractive Dirac fermions. Our simulation indicates the absence of pairing order in the system and shows a quantum phase transition from the semimetal to charge density wave (CDW) at the critical point $U_c=-1.52(2)$. We demonstrate that this quantum phase transition belongs to the chiral Ising universality class according to the numerically determined critical exponents $\nu=0.82(3)$ and $\eta=0.58(4)$. With the increase of coupling strength, the trion formation is investigated, and the change in probability of the on-site trion occupancy infers the coexistence of on-site trionic and off-site trionic CDW states at half-filling.
