Abstract

Several open problems in quantum information theory can be formulated as equipartition problems for positive operators, asking for a decomposition into bounded-rank positive parts under uniform constraints. The existence problems for SIC-POVMs and MUBs are of this type, as is the Ruskai-Audenaert conjecture. We first show that certain problems of this form can be attacked using equivariant cohomology, and then present new results on the Ruskai-Audenaert conjecture. In its weak form, this conjecture asserts that every quantum channel admits a convex decomposition into a minimal number of generalized extreme points; in its strong form, one with equal weights. We prove the strong conjecture in all dimensions for a set of channels of nonzero measure, including all cq- and qc-channels, as well as for all channels with qubit inputs. We also prove the weak conjecture for all qutrit channels, along with further results on convex decompositions of quantum channels.

On symmetric decompositions of positive operators

Maria Anastasia Jivulescu, Ion Nechita, Paşc Găvruţa

Abstract We present results concerning decompositions of positive operators acting on finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces. Our motivation is the study of a generalized version of the SIC–POVM problem, which has applications to Quantum Information Theory. We relax some of the conditions in the SIC–POVM setting (the elements sum up to the identity, resp. the elements have unit rank), and we focus on equiangular decompositions (the elements of the decomposition should have the same length, and pairs of distinct elements should have constant angles). We characterize all such decompositions, comparing our results with the case of SIC–POVMs. We also generalize some existing Welch-type inequalities.

Symmetric informationally complete positive operators-valued measures and the Knaster’s conjecture

S. B. Samuel, Z. Gedik

Symmetric Informationally Complete Positive Operator-Valued Measures (SIC-POVMs) have been constructed in many dimensions using the Weyl–Heisenberg group. In the quantum information community, it is commonly believed that SIC-POVMs exist in all dimensions; however, the general proof of their existence is still an open problem. By mapping SIC-POVMs onto the generalized Bloch sphere, we prove two geometric existence statements associated with the SIC-POVM existence problem. First, we prove the Knaster’s conjecture for n vertices of an n-simplex and use that to prove the existence of a continuous family of general SIC-POVMs where the trace of the kth power of the operators is the same for (n2 − 1) of the elements. Furthermore, by using numerical methods, we show that in dimensions 3 and 4, a regular simplex can be constructed on the Bloch sphere such that all its vertices correspond to density matrices having the same trace of ρ3. In the three-dimensional Hilbert space, we generate 104 general SIC-POVMs for where all the elements have the same set of randomly chosen eigenvalues, indicating the continuous set of general SIC-POVMs can be constructed for all possible values of trace of ρ3.

SIC-POVMs and the Knaster's Conjecture

S. B. Samuel, Z. Gedik

Symmetric Informationally Complete Positive Operator-Valued Measures (SIC-POVMs) have been constructed in many dimensions using the Weyl-Heisenberg group. In the quantum information community, it is commonly believed that SCI-POVMs exist in all dimensions; however, the general proof of their existence is still an open problem. The Bloch sphere representation of SIC-POVMs allows for a general geometric description of the set of operators, where they form the vertices of a regular simplex oriented based on a continuous function. We use this perspective of the SIC-POVMs to prove the Knaster's conjecture for the geometry of SIC-POVMs and prove the existence of a continuous family of generalized SIC-POVMs where $(n^2-1)$ of the matrices have the same value of $Tr(ρ^k)$. Furthermore, by using numerical methods, we show that a regular simplex can be constructed such that all its vertices map to the same value of $Tr(ρ^3)$ on the Bloch sphere of $3$ and $4$ dimensional Hilbert spaces. In the $3$-dimensional Hilbert space, we generate $10^4$ generalized SIC-POVMs for randomly chosen $Tr(ρ^3)$ values such that all the elements are equivalent up to unitary transformations.

The overlap phases of SIC-POVMs

Xin Lü

Abstract A symmetric informationally complete positive-operator-valued measure (SIC-POVM) is a special type of generalized quantum measurements that possesses a high degree of symmetry. It plays an important role in quantum tomography, quantum cryptography and foundations of quantum mechanics. The most important and difficult problem about SIC-POVM is to show its existence in every dimension n, which is suggested by many numerical evidences. In this paper, this existence problem of SIC-POVMs is investigated by considering their overlap phases. Specifically, the symmetric requirements of SIC-POVMs are encoded into the overlap phases between the fiducial project and the n 2 displacement operators. In this way, an equivalent condition of the existence of Weyl-Heisenberg group covariant SIC-POVMs is obtained in terms of these phases, so that a set of complex equations is established, which enables one to study the existence problem in a more explicit and direct fashion. In particular, we show that all the numbers appearing in the overlap phases have to be algebraic numbers. The significance of Zauner’s conjecture in our equivalent condition is also discussed, and therefore the SIC-POVMs in dimension four is constructed explicitly. Actually, our system of equations always admits a solution, the real difficulty lies in how to ensure these complex number solutions are of norm one, and therefore indeed phases. Our result shows that constructing SIC-POVMs from the overlap phases is possible, and symmetries can be applied directly to reduce the number of equations, so that it provide new insights into the difficult problem of SIC-POVMs, especially about the algebraic properties of these overlap phases.

Extreme quantum states and processes, and extreme points of general spectrahedra in finite dimensional algebras

Giulio Chiribella

Convex sets of quantum states and processes play a central role in quantum theory and quantum information. Many important examples of convex sets in quantum theory are spectrahedra, that is, sets of positive operators subject to affine constraints. These examples include sets of quantum states with given expectation values of some observables of interest, sets of multipartite quantum states with given marginals, sets of quantum measurements, channels, and multitime quantum processes, as well as sets of higher-order quantum maps and quantum causal structures. This contribution provides a characterisation of the extreme points of general spectrahedra, and bounds on the ranks of the corresponding operators. The general results are applied to several special cases, and are used to retrieve classic results such as Choi's characterisation of the extreme quantum channels, Parhasarathy's characterisation of the extreme quantum states with given marginals, and the quantum version of Birkhoff's theorem for qubit unital channels. Finally, we propose a notion of positive operator valued measures (POVMs) with general affine constraints for their normalisation, and we characterise the extremal POVMs.

On quantum channels: extreme points, topology, and categorical properties

J. M. S. T. da Silva

In this thesis, quantum channels are studied from the point of view of Mathematics. We studied the CPTP (completely positive trace preserving) and UCPTP channels, the latter being the unital channels. In both cases, the sets are compact convex, so they are the closure of their extreme points. We constructed extreme CPTP maps for every possible rank. We also constructed extreme UCPTP maps with rank 2 for each possible dimension. For ranks of at least 3, we constructed extreme UCPTP maps for many dimensions and ranks. We also proved that the tensor product of extreme CPTP maps is an extreme CPTP map. For UCPTP maps, we proved that the same is not always true, with many counterexamples. It is known that the category of CPTP maps is semicartesian. We add to this a classification of binary products. We proved that products only exist in trivial cases. For binary coproducts, we obtained the dimensions they should have, if they exist. In both cases, topological techniques were used. For this reason, we also investigated the topology of the closure of the set of extreme points of the CPTP maps. Topological invariants can be computed from decompositions of a space such as CW structures. These are a type of decomposition in which the space is expressed as a gluing of balls. In the search for a CW structure for the closure of the set of extreme CPTP maps, we obtained a partial decomposition that resembles a CW structure of the complex projective space.
