Abstract

We develop a GNS-based construction of geometric tensors on smooth parametric statistical models over $C^*$-algebras. Since the state space of a $C^*$-algebra is generally not a smooth manifold, the construction does not rely on pulling back tensors from an ambient state manifold. Instead, the GNS Hilbert spaces and their duals are organized into non-locally-trivial Hilbert fibrations over the state space. For models satisfying a compatibility condition expressing derivatives of expectation values as continuous functionals on the realified GNS fibers, each tangent vector admits a canonical dual GNS representative. Pulling back the dual GNS Hermitian product along the corresponding canonical lift produces a Hermitian tensor $K$ on the complexified tangent bundle of the model, whose real and imaginary parts define, under suitable regularity assumptions, a smooth weak Riemannian metric tensor $G$ and a smooth two-form $Ω$. In finite-dimensional parameter manifolds the metric is, of course, strong. The construction recovers the Fisher--Rao metric in the commutative dominated case, the Fubini--Study geometry for pure states up to the normalization and sign convention imposed by the dual GNS pairing, and the SLD metric for faithful quantum states. In finite-dimensional faithful models, the two-form $Ω$ is proportional, up to convention, to the expected commutator of the SLD representatives, equivalently to the mean Uhlmann curvature. We show through faithful qubits and displaced thermal states that $Ω$ need not be closed. For bundle-regular models, the associated fiberwise symplectic form on the real dual GNS bundle admits connection-dependent closed extensions to the total space, while closedness of $Ω$ on the parameter manifold is controlled by the covariant exterior derivative of the canonical real dual GNS lift.

From the Jordan Product to Riemannian Geometries on Classical and Quantum States

Florio M. Ciaglia, Jürgen Jost, Lorenz Schwachhöfer

The Jordan product on the self-adjoint part of a finite-dimensional C * -algebra A is shown to give rise to Riemannian metric tensors on suitable manifolds of states on A , and the covariant derivative, the geodesics, the Riemann tensor, and the sectional curvature of all these metric tensors are explicitly computed. In particular, it is proved that the Fisher-Rao metric tensor is recovered in the Abelian case, that the Fubini-Study metric tensor is recovered when we consider pure states on the algebra B ( H ) of linear operators on a finite-dimensional Hilbert space H , and that the Bures-Helstrom metric tensors is recovered when we consider faithful states on B ( H ) . Moreover, an alternative derivation of these Riemannian metric tensors in terms of the GNS construction associated to a state is presented. In the case of pure and faithful states on B ( H ) , this alternative geometrical description clarifies the analogy between the Fubini-Study and the Bures-Helstrom metric tensor.

Parametric models and information geometry on W*-algebras

Florio M. Ciaglia, Fabio Di Nocera, Jürgen Jost +1 more

Abstract We introduce the notion of smooth parametric model of normal positive linear functionals on possibly infinite-dimensional $$W^{\star }$$ W ⋆ -algebras generalizing the notions of parametric models used in classical and quantum information geometry. We then use the Jordan product naturally available in this context in order to define a Riemannian metric tensor on parametric models satsfying suitable regularity conditions. This Riemannian metric tensor reduces to the Fisher–Rao metric tensor, or to the Fubini-Study metric tensor, or to the Bures–Helstrom metric tensor when suitable choices for the $$W^{\star }$$ W ⋆ -algebra and the models are made.

Generalised state space geometry in Hermitian and non-Hermitian quantum systems

Kunal Pal

Abstract One of the key features of information geometry in the classical setting is the existence of a metric structure and a family of connections on the space of probability distributions. The uniqueness of the Fisher–Rao metric and the duality of these connections is at the heart of classical information geometry. However, these features do not carry over straightforwardly to quantum systems, where a Hermitian inner product structure on the Hilbert space induces a metric on the complex projective space of pure states, the Fubini–Study tensor, which is preserved under unitary evolution. In this work, we explore how the modification of the Hermitian tensor structure on the projective space may affect the geometry of pure quantum states, and whether such generalisations can be used to define dual connections with a direct correspondence to classical probability distribution functions, modified by the presence of a non-trivial phase. We show that it is indeed possible to construct a family of connections that are dual to each other in a generalised sense with respect to the real-valued sector of the Fubini–Study tensor. Using this biorthogonal formalism, we systematically classify the four types of tensors that can arise when the dynamics of a quantum system are governed by a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, identifying both the complex-valued metric and the Berry curvature. Finally, we elucidate the role of the metric in a quantum natural gradient descent optimisation problem, generalised to the non-Hermitian case for a suitable choice of cost function.

The Infinitesimal Structure of Quantum Information

Luca Barbieri-Viale

This paper establishes a rigorous, unified geometric framework for quantum state spaces by constructing smooth, regular embeddings into higher-order dual number algebras $\mathcal{Q}_N \equiv \mathbb{R}[\varepsilon]/(\varepsilon^{N^2-1})$, wherein every quantum state is faithfully represented as a non-reduced scheme-theoretic point. We show that under this unified family of truncated rings, the non-linear matrix commutators governing the Liouville-von Neumann dynamics map globally onto flat, linear, and rigid algebraic flows, establishing nilpotent dual algebras as a pristine geometric landscape for higher-dimensional quantum kinematics. As $N \to \infty$, this family converges to a Cauchy-complete power series ring $\mathcal{Q}_\infty$, where non-Archimedean completion linearizes the phase space, aligning the Fubini-Study geometry with the classical Fisher-Rao manifold.

Information Geometry, Jordan Algebras, and a Coadjoint Orbit-Like Construction

Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Spain, Florio M. Ciaglia, Jürgen Jost +1 more

Jordan algebras arise naturally in (quantum) information geometry, and we want to understand their role and their structure within that framework. Inspired by Kirillov's discussion of the symplectic structure on coadjoint orbits, we provide a similar construction in the case of real Jordan algebras. Given a real, finite-dimensional, formally real Jordan algebra ${\mathcal J}$, we exploit the generalized distribution determined by the Jordan product on the dual ${\mathcal J}^{\star}$ to induce a pseudo-Riemannian metric tensor on the leaves of the distribution. In particular, these leaves are the orbits of a Lie group, which is the structure group of ${\mathcal J}$, in clear analogy with what happens for coadjoint orbits. However, this time in contrast with the Lie-algebraic case, we prove that not all points in ${\mathcal J}^{*}$ lie on a leaf of the canonical Jordan distribution. When the leaves are contained in the cone of positive linear functionals on ${\mathcal J}$, the pseudo-Riemannian structure becomes Riemannian and, for appropriate choices of ${\mathcal J}$, it coincides with the Fisher-Rao metric on non-normalized probability distributions on a finite sample space, or with the Bures-Helstrom metric for non-normalized, faithful quantum states of a finite-level quantum system, thus showing a direct link between the mathematics of Jordan algebras and both classical and quantum information geometry.

Fluctuations, uncertainty relations, and the geometry of quantum state manifolds

Balázs Hetényi, Péter Lévay

The complete quantum metric of a parametrized quantum system has a real part (usually known as the Provost-Vallee metric) and a symplectic imaginary part (known as the Berry curvature). In this paper, we first investigate the relation between the Riemann curvature tensor of the space described by the metric, and the Berry curvature, by explicit parallel transport of a vector in Hilbert space. Subsequently, we write a generating function from which the complex metric, as well as higher-order geometric tensors (affine connection, Riemann curvature tensor), can be obtained in terms of gauge-invariant cumulants. The generating function explicitly relates the quantities which characterize the geometry of the parameter space to quantum fluctuations. We also show that for a mixed quantum-classical system both real and imaginary parts of the quantum metric contribute to the dynamics, if the mass tensor is Hermitian. A many-operator generalization of the uncertainty principle results from taking the determinant of the complex quantum metric. We also calculate the quantum metric for a number of Lie group coherent states, including several representations of the $\text{SU}(1,1)$ group. In our examples nontrivial complex geometry results for generalized coherent states. A pair of oscillator states corresponding to the $\text{SU}(1,1)$ group gives a double series for its spectrum. The two minimal uncertainty coherent states show trivial geometry, but, again, for generalized coherent states nontrivial geometry results.
